Wonder why they are pushing shared plans so hard. The costs are about the same. Maybe market research suggests people are more likely to overpay for shared plans thinking they are more protected than before.

wrong buddy it costs way more for the data like almost 3x more. you also get stuck paying for texts that you may or may not want i only pay for 200 and barley use 50 of em.... not even close

Apple Wireless?

When is Apple just going to start their own cell company.. :apple:

Dear, ATT

Oh im leaving. Just not yet i'm going to wait until you bump me off unlimited data November 2013 then im gone.... In the mean time ill stick it to ya and continue to use all the "UNLIMITED" data i can.

Then you have no reason for a shared data plan. These plans aren't for everyone, it depends on your situation and number of devices. I'm surprised there wasn't this big of an uproar when Verizon announced their plans and forced you change to them. AT&T isn't! I'm tired of everyone saying they are jumping ship to Sprint as well, their network in most areas is horrible, and the grandfathered unlimited plans people want to keep. Why? I currently have an unlimited plan, but I can't use any data after 3gb because it's throttled so bad I can't even stream music.

I'm going to save money going to the shared plan and I plan on adding my parents phones and ipad to my plan later as well, that'll give me a total of 8 devices and 6 people paying towards the bill, and with 15gb of data to share. That'll make my bill $360 (according to AT&T's calculator) and bring my bill down to $60 per person, and that's before my employer discount.

That's $60 per person for UNLIMITED minutes and texts, plus around 2gb per device, in my plan 4 people will only be using 1gb per month, so please tell me what family plan I can get that with.

For me I only need 15gb for all 8 devices, because i'm the only data hog and I use plently of texts and not very many voice minutes, but everyone else on my plan uses tons of minutes.

So you can't really say the plans aren't worth it until you apply to your own situation.

Why even bother with AT&T or Verizon? AT&T is too much into these money-grabbing schemes and Verizon is way too buddy-buddy with Google.

Seriously, just sign up for Sprint. Unlimited text messaging, unlimited data, unlimited mobile-to-mobile. How can you say no? :)

Because AT&T when throttled is faster than Sprint at full speed. ;)

This is by no means a defense of AT&T.

Easy for me, Sprint in my area can't even stream music without stopping every 10 seconds, makes unlimited data pretty useless.

None of my friends or associates work for free. Nor do they work at a discount.

Apple makes a fat profit, well above industry average, on almost everything they sell. Yet the moment AT&T makes any move regarding pricing, people get all emotional.

If you cannot afford the price to operate your smartphone, it's time to learn how to budget.

Perhaps a pre paid feature phone is more your style :)

Tell me, how does it smell under that bridge, love?

Can you provide links to supporting information on this (and/or can anyone here confirm that they've seen the same thing)? If AT&T truly is throttling data so badly after just 3GB that you can't even reliably stream music, then that would definitely make me rethink my position about keeping my unlimited data plans. I use a large amount of data, but probably keep it under 3GB normally. But I've been hesitant to give up my unlimited plan because I figured my usage will probably only go up in the future. But if they're making the over 3GB usage practically unusable, then I'd be more apt to switch to one of the newer plans, for the other benefits they offer.

I wish I could, I don't have any friends who use alot of data or have unlimited plans for that matter. But for me its unusable, the next time I get throttled, i'll do a speed test and send you a screenshot of my speed.

When I switched to the iPhone 4 I had the original iPhone with only Edge. I was able to keep my unlimited data plan that I still use today even though I moved to the 3G network. I'm not saying that AT&T can't make us change plans when the next iPhone comes out, but there already is history that grandfathered plans can move to upgraded networks.
Not exactly accurate. When you upgraded from the original iPhone to the 4, you were moved from one unlimited data plan to a new unlimited data plan. Remember that you used to be charged $20/mo for data, and when you upgraded to the 4, you started paying $30. The $20 plan was only for EDGE devices, whereas the $30 plan was to encompass 3G devices.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but both EDGE and 3G were GSM technology, whereas the new iPhone will be LTE technology.
EDGE == 2G GSM data
WCDMA == 3G GSM data
LTE == 4G GSM data

They all fall underneath the GSM umbrella.

Hey Tim, any chance you could talk to AT&T in regards to there customers that are NOT on a shared plan

As for AT&T your service is generally horrible and you'll be forced to change this down the road

I've ran the numbers. It will be cheaper for my wife and me if our FAN discount applies.

Well, customer retention.

Some of those grandfathered plan subscribers are holding onto cheaper rates or seeing unlimited plans as the only reason why they are still with AT&T. If you read other comments in this thread, there seem to be more than a handful.

Yeah, I realize that. I am one of them. It just seems like they are trying so hard to get us to drop the grandfathered plan that eventually they will just force us to do so or else we won't get a MAJOR function of the phone.

I don't think people really understand how much money all that bandwidth that face-time uses costs.

I don't think you understand data and wireless networks at all.

Please explain to me how the 2gb I buy in a normal data plan is any different than the 2tb I buy in a share plan? Data is data. FaceTime doesn't cost AT&T any more than any other traffic, period.

I PAID for that bandwidth. Streaming any video is going to put as much strain on the network as FaceTime. I can use Netflix, youtube, Skype or any other video calling I service I want over 3G on any data plan, why should FaceTime be different?

My kids, my wife, my two good friends.

Kids call me every morning. Wife sometimes in the afternoon. I talk to my friends 2-3 times a week.

Aren't they on the same network as you? I know AT&T doesn't charge you minutes for talking on the phone with some one else on an AT&T mobile. It's one reason we do well on a grandfathered old minute plan (it's so small they don't even offer it anymore). It's not just that we don't talk on the phone much, the few people we tend to talk the most on the phone have AT&T as well so we don't use up minutes talking to them.

(I would assume other networks are the same).

I'm stunned and disappointed, I've put up with the crappy coverage for years, but now they've decided to FORCE people off their old plans by simply not allowing the phones to work properly unless you get a new plan?

Good ****ing thinking AT&T - I put up with your ****** service to keep my grandfathered plan even though I don't actually use that much data, but now I have no reason to stay with you at all - time for a new carrier. Idiots.

ATT dominates the market, they have no incentive to provide good deals until they begin to waver. If you want a consumer friendly plan, switch to Sprint or Verizon. They are both playing catch up (Sprint more-so). If you're willing to ditch the iPhone or Jailbreak and throw out a few features T-mobile has even more impressive rates than even Sprint these days.

Not true. I know someone with an android phone who pays over $100 dollars for her plan. She is on Sprint and I am on ATT. She gets the same mins I get (450), unlimited text, and data. The only thing I don't have is unlimited data, but do get roll over mins which I have used on a number of occasions. I pay closer to $65-$70. She is constantly complaining about speed dropped calls and over all bad customer serves. Until Sprint gets faster speads and lowers the rates or T-Mobile gets the iPhone I think I am going to stick with ATT. And No I don't think Sprint is consumer friendly (other then offering unlimited data you can never use lol)

Bait and switch for FaceTime on 3G

"AT&T will not charge customers for using the FaceTime over Cellular feature in iOS 6, but will require users to be on one of its new Mobile Share data plans"

Which in fact means they will charge you for using FaceTime as there shared plan is a RIPOFF! They charge a lot more for this plan unless you have 5 or more phones on one plan then you might break even changing. :mad:
