AT&T will not charge customers for using the FaceTime over Cellular feature in iOS 6, but will require users to be on one of its new Mobile Share data plans. Last month, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson declined to talk about how the company would handle the new FaceTime feature, saying "it's too early to talk about pricing."

AT&T's new Mobile Share data plans will launch August 23rd, allowing users to share their monthly data allotment across multiple devices. The plans are structured with two basic components: a monthly cost for a data allotment and a per-device charge that varies from $10 to $45 depending on the type of device and the data plan selected. All of the plans include unlimited talk and text.

Here's the statement from AT&T:
While AT&T is clearly encouraging customers to switch to the new Mobile Share plans, users can keep their existing tiered single-phone or grandfathered unlimited data plans -- though without the FaceTime over Cellular feature.

In the U.S., Sprint has said it will not charge for FaceTime over Cellular. Verizon hasn't specified what it will require of customers to use the feature.

****ed up united states mobile tragedy.

I wonder if they are pissed I still have my unlimited data plan and I wonder how pissed they will be when I have an unlimited data plan on 4G LTE on the next iPhone :)

I will be having a nice chat with someone from att in the upcoming weeks. I have an upgrade coming for this new iphone _ _ _ ? And i will not be coming out of my unlimited plan that i've had for 4 yearsssss!!! This is the worst news of the day so far.

Shared data plan? But what if the only thing I have on my AT&T plan is the iPhone, nothing else?
Edit: Nevermind - "And unlike Verizon, AT&T will continue to offer its existing plans alongside the new Mobile Share plans, giving users several options to help fit their device and service needs."

Don't expect your unlimited 3G plan to carry over to 4G LTE. At least Verizon has already said that its customers will not be able to do so, unless you buy the phone out of contract for full price (not subsidized). I don't see a reason why AT&T wouldn't do the same.
I'm in the same boat as you, still have my unlimited data plan on my 4S. I just don't think we'll be able to keep it once the new iPhone is announced.

That's what I am wondering. I only have my iPhone on my AT&T plan so why woul I get a shared data plan? What woul it even do for me besides waste money?

You will be ass rapped. Just like everyone else.

I was thinking the same thing. Out of curiosity, what do you pay before taxes and fees for your individual plan?

save money block your data plan ask how

:apple::apple: no need for data plan when you have wifi faster and free :p

Steve Jobs would not have allowed Apple to be bullied by the carriers.
None of my friends or associates work for free. Nor do they work at a discount.

Apple makes a fat profit, well above industry average, on almost everything they sell. Yet the moment AT&T makes any move regarding pricing, people get all emotional.

If you cannot afford the price to operate your smartphone, it's time to learn how to budget.

Perhaps a pre paid feature phone is more your style :)

No complaints from me. I'm actually moving to the shared data plans when it hits next week.

Same here. Maybe. I may wait until the new iPhone comes out.

Why would you do such a thing? Is it saving you money?

For the cost of adding one more iPhone to my plan, the "Shared Data" plan will allow me to add two iPhones, give me more data, enable Tethering, AND now it will give me FaceTime when iOS 6 comes out.

There are other scenarios where someone could be spending ~$300 with existing plans will see their bill drop to ~$200 with the new plans.

If the plan will cost YOU more money, then do not switch. But the new plans are definitely something that other people want.

Apples and oranges.

Why would you do such a thing? Is it saving you money?

Theoretically it could, if you have a lot of devices. For instance, the 4GB plan is $70, plus $45 for unlimited text and voice on a phone, plus $10 for a tablet, and $20 for a Mi-Fi. Hotspot is included. Thus for $145, you have 4GB to share among 3 devices (or $135 for a phone and two tablets). It could be worth it for some people.

So first they make people switch from unlimited data to a tiered data plan in order to get tethering. Now they are making people switch again from tiered data plan to a shared data plan to use FaceTime over Cellular. What is next?

They basically found a way to pretend like they aren't charging for FaceTime, even though they are in most cases. Most people do not have the unlimited voice and SMS plan right now, or have 4+ phone lines on their account, which is the only way these new shared plans actually save you money.

I really hope Sprint speeds up their LTE rollout.

I think you are looking for the word: hypocritical (or hypocrite)

Jokes on you, you won't be able to, nor I. They don't have the grandfathered plans provisioned on their LTE service. I know, I tried already. I had a grandfathered 3G data card from around 2002, and the wouldn't let me upgrade to LTE for this reasons. They said it was impossible for a grandfathered plan to be used with their LTE service, or any type. Their the guys even gave me a device to test, and sure enough, it just doesn't work. So, when the LTE iPhone comes out, I'm pretty confident there won't bra grandfathered unlimited plan anymore. Hello Sprint.

What a crappy move by AT&T. They must reallllly hate users (like myself) with unlimited data plans. It doesn't surprise me that they'd stoop this low just to have some of us switch.

They're a bunch of clowns and I don't think I'll be with them much longer.

Why would you do such a thing? Is it saving you money?

I'm in the same boat as he is. I'm not saving with this new plan, it will be even for me. But I do pick up tethering which I've wanted but didn't want to pay extra for. I guess that makes it a net gain.

Why would you do such a thing? Is it saving you money?

Verizon share plans saved me over $60 per month from what I was paying compared to what I was actually using:
-- 1400 minutes
-- Unlimited texting
-- 2 $30 unlimited plans
-- Tethering for my phone

I completely get that this isn't a good deal for single line users, but my wife and I barely use 1 gig *combined* per month. I had tethering for the 3-4 times per month I would be on the road and unable to find a wifi spot for my iPad. We still have a lot of friends who don't have iMessage, and my cell phone works as a home/cell/work phone, so minutes are still important to me (especially since I'm in sales).

Single line users: I get the hate.

A family of 2: probably break even

Business lines: massive savings
