I ran testmyiphone.com and kept getting like 72 kbps or lower, just abysmal here in philly. My friend was getting the same thing.

Then I tested on iphonespeedtest.com and got 435 kbps. I don't know which site to trust but I hope the 2nd one is correct.

Either way, it's pretty slow. I can't see much of a difference between edge and 3g. Sucks.

I'm in Center City Philadelphia

Slow ATT 3G

From Boston North Shore, daytime and early evening, consistently < 100kbs. Late evening and early morning improves to high 300kbs. When ATT is delivering sub edge speeds on 3G when the clear promise was for much faster service, then perhaps it is time to file small claims. I for one, will not pay $240.00 extra over two years for something that is not being delivered.

Response...

Actually, that delay in typing a password is a new FEATURE, allowing you to briefly see the letters as typed. Personally, I find this one useful. And the password you enter 'disappears' quickly after each letter is typed in case you have 'prying eyes' looking over your shoulder.

Allow me to demonstrate just how sluggish EVERYTHING has been since the software update: when typing in a password (say, on macrumors for instance, to respond to a thread) the actual letters are appearing as you type a split second before being replaced by the familiar black security dot that usually appears immediately to mask it.

Hmm

.21Mbps(207 kbps) I'm in Lincoln City OR till i go back to Gilbert AZ, wonder if it will be that fast, or HOPEFULLY faster back home.

Chicago Area Sucks!

Northern burbs which show full G coverage. Mostly one or two bars everywhere I go. Speed is about the same as Edge yet my AAT USB still connects at good speeds.

Mark

Though I generally hate living in Tampa, this could be a bright spot!

I think most of florida has good coverage, im in gainesville and 3g works great, way faster than edge, in fact i was going down to orlando and lost g3 for a little bit and had to put the phone away because i coudnt take the slowness...lol

Same here

in NY (Long Island)

tests today using tesymyiphone.com at 3pm, the speed is a joke

EDGE - 0.23 mbps (233kbps / 28kbs)
3G - 0.16 mbps (157kbps / 19kbs)

And no, I didn't type this backwards, 3g is slower right now, LOL

Both edge and 3g have all 5 bars while testing in my area

I am in the south loop of Chicago right now and my results at 11:33pm (less traffic perhaps?) after 5 speed readings averaged are:

3G: 400kbps
Edge: 330kbps

I need to test during the day. I am also located inside a building with 1 bar on 3G and EDGE.

330 kbps on EDGE? I thought its theoretical max was just over 200 or something...

YAY!!!! i got up to 18k on 3g, lol

ATT should be ashamed of themselves for making us pay an additional $10 a month for slower network speeds. God I wish Verizon had this phone.

AT&T sucks balls, I have a 3g phone that I have to disable 3g on for it to run smooth, Great service

Speed Test Results

From NYC 3G, I'm getting the following:

0.27Mbps (270kpbs/33kb/s)
Transferred 256KB in 7.8 sec
"We think you're on EDGE"

This is freakin sad! I was supposed to switch from Verizon i760 where I have EVDO and up to 1.5Mb connection... Webpages and Google Maps load very quickly on my VZW phone... My iPhone connection is MUCH slower...very noticably.

WTF?!? Should I keep my VZW (BigRed)

I get 1734kbps / 212 kb/s.

Of course I'm testing this in The Netherlands and my 3G signal is about half.

So in closing. Your AT&T network sucks. :(

Update: I just got 3110 kpbs / 380 kb/s.

And no its not on wifi. I have that turned off currently.

I need to move to The Netherlands, where their Girls are amazing and so is their 3G network.

Im 40 min from the suburbs of Pittsburgh and I bearly get 3G.. not at my house, or at my work :( I hope ATT upgrades soon!

I was at the beginning of a 3g network with 2-3 bars and got a speed of 444kbps

then 228
then 233

Sad if you ask me! Now I was not in the heart of a 3G network, not sure if that will make a difference or not.

In the metro detroit area, i have noticed that EDGE (159 Kbps) has been close to 3g (328.9 Kbps) at times during the day. This is not one of them.

Hmmm a password security feature that allows you to actually see the password as you type it, only to replace each preceding character with a security dot after you type each new character....BRILLIANT!!!

Does anybody else see how this completely and utterly defeats the purpose??

Oh so I suppose the 3x enlarged characters with each key press on the virtual keyboard aren't enough to aid you in typing the correct password huh? So inadequate, in fact, that they now have to show you your super secret password as you type it huh???

Brought to you and sponsored by the same people who've now released 2 versions of a phone that can surf the web seamlessly but still can't initiate a voice-dialed call or restrict ingoing/outgoing calls. Brilliant!

...Oh, I gotta ask, unless you absolutely need GPS compared to tower triangulation for some professional or personal reasons requiring very high accuracy, why would you upgrade to a 3G iPhone now if you live in an area that presently has no 3G service?

They have already been upgrading towers here, and the Midland-Odessa area will go 3g late September to early October. Believe it or not, but because of the heavy oil field operations here, the Midland and Odessa store sell more broadband notebook cards than the metro area.

In addition, i wanted to go to the 16gb model, so why eBay a 16gb 2g model which is costing more than the 3g model. So, not quite as crazy as it may sound.

No 3G for me...

...but I have to say, in my two decades of Apple gear (or any tech for that matter) I've never found my experience to approach the promised levels. Real world vs lab, right?

I think this is an improvement over what was before... Also, several Motorola phones (and some Nokias) have this as well. If a person is glancing over your shoulder, they can already see what you're typing anyway, so I don't see how showing the letter for a two-three second interval (and not until the following letter is typed as you stated) would defeat security.

But I do have to agree with you on the missing voice dialing features, however

I don't have my iPhone 3G, yet, but this is an AT&T network problem, not the iPhone. I have a Moto Q9h currently and I was getting 1+ Mbps up until this past weekend. Now I tend to get around 300-400 kbps. My guess is the sudden rush of new 3G phones that actually have useful web browsers and other data needs have over-taxed the network. Browsing the web on a Windows Mobile device is pretty much an exercise in futility, so I'd think very few actually do it.

Irvine, California. It varies from location to location. In some places it's only EDGE speed, and in other locations it's up to 564 kbps. It really depends on what street I'm driving down .... uhhh .... not that I would use my phone in the car.:D

I called AT&T yesterday because I was thinking of getting the 3G phone (I have the 1st generation iPhone) and I had checked their 3G map and I was solidly in the middle (not on the fringe). However I sometimes cannot get a signal and have to walk out on my deck where I get 1 maybe 2 bars  I told the rep that there was a cell tower not half a mile from my house and if it wasn't for the trees I could see it from my deck. I said I should be getting 5 bars and why would they show solid 3G coverage when it obviously wasn't. He checked his records and said 'yes that's our tower'. I told him that when I had Verizon I got solid coverage at home. WTF is going on here. He said that their techs had been out tweaking (whatever that means) the towers to improve 3G reception and that maybe they had over tweaked to the detriment of EDGE reception.
Anyone have any idea WTF he was talking about or was it bullsh*t to explain their crappy coverage. From what I've read here I'm sticking with my current iPhone.

pretty odd...

Strong 3G networks are now getting hammered and the 2g speeds are increasing. Problem is I want to retain the advantage of voice and data and not have calls go to VM when you are on 2g.

Mixed testing over the last two days. Everything from 60K to 500K plus.
Now 202K going through this thread.

AT&T was not ready for the 3G volume, that is obvious. Hopefully, it will be adjust and get better in the short term. $120 a year for very slight improvement is not a fair charge.
