3G also seems slow in Buffalo

i'm in buffalo ny and earlier was was getting around 120 on average. i just restored my phone now it's around 250-300. it's better but it could just be because it's later in the day. i'm really hoping this is just temporary and that speeds will be back up to what they should be.

I'm also in the Buffalo, NY area and have not been overly impressed with the 3G speeds. I see between 200 and 400 kbps on average. My last test was the fastest yet at 441. Hopefully the speeds come up a bit as AT&T builds out.

i don't know what you guys are talking about....3G speeds in chicago have been pretty good! Even edge seems to have improved on my original iphone. See screenshot below:

Isn't reception more serious than the bandwidth at this point?

So of all the stories to post, we post the one about low bandwidth speeds?

Shouldn't you guys have noticed that the 3G iPhone has the worst 3G reception most people have ever seen? I am in Austin, a city that is supposed to be completely blanketed in 3G, and can't get a 3G signal 80% of the time.... When I do, it's 1-2 bars 95% of the time.

Bandwidth will resolve itself over time. At this point, I have far more faith in AT&T than Apple. The reception issue is the iPhone's, as I've had my iPhone next to other 3G phones and they're getting full reception and I'm on 1 bar or EDGE. Pathetic for a phone that boasts 'better reception'

Apple better fix it quick, and I pray it's a software bug....

I think he completed the test, then he moved and his phone lost 3G and reverted to EDGE, or he moved out of wifi. EDGE isn't physically capable of those kind of network speeds....

Heres my 3G connection speeds with 5 bars in midtown NYC.

needless to say I am extremely pissed with this... what the hell am i paying more money for 3G service for? I want to see an official response from both companys with what they are going to do about this. I want to see a refund for the price of service during this outage time since I obviously cant use what I am paying for.

More bars in more places my ass! At home in NJ i have 0-2 bars for 3G even tho it clearly states 3G coverage according to ATT's map which I checked before I purchased the new phone.

gotta say just got rid of the 1 gen iphone for the new. I am not very impressed with it yet. Twice as fast half the price== 3g battery drainer that is slow, if not slower during prime time usage then the edge network. Plus the dam yellow tint screen, my gut told me to stick with the 1 gen for now. Oh well.

since I got my iPhone during last friday's launch, i had only 1 to 3 bars of 3g signal strength in my house. As of today, I've started to get 5 bars of 3g signal strength in my house!!!

I'm in DC metro area (VA) and speed is about 486 kbps

BTW, that was with iphonespeedtest.com.

Testmyiphone.com gave me 1mbps

I cant take sitting through anymore EDGE tests that take WAY too long.

ATT service is absolutely pathetic..........................................

3G slow as hell?

I just got my new iPhone 3g yesterday!
The so called 3g speed's are HORRIBLE!!
Surfing web pages is a little faster, that's good....but downloading an attachment in mail, a 5mb mov file, took about 10 minutes!!! That's dial-up slow! The download was running around 20kbs...that's completely useless!

I'm at FULL bars, in downtown Albany where ATT's coverage map shows PERFECT 3g coverage. I'm near a window, nothing interfering etc...

Tried rebooting the phone as well. I guess I'll try the reset network function next....

I know it's only been a week, so hopefully this is just ATT ironing out the kinks. Even with the slow network, I'd still keep the iPhone.

Anyone else having extremely slow data connections?

Unfortunately you are not alone - alot of people are experiencing slow download speeds and there is a controversy on whether it is the iPhone 3G or AT&T service. I tend to believe it is the latter as late at night and early in the morning my download speeds soar above 1 Mbps whereas during the day when the most people are accessing the network the numbers plummet.

The AT&T coverage map is misleading as they only tell you if 3G service is available in a given area. It does not tell you the quality of the signal in that area or is it is overloaded by too many users. AT&T needs to improve the quality of the 3G service ASAP!!!

This is exactly the reason I swore off 3g iPhone ...

Or at least I begged myself not to get caught up in the excitement....

I have purchased so many Apple products over the last 20 years, it blows my mind. I purchased 3 iPhone 600's (original model/price) on June 29th last year... Apple has always tried to get us to drink the Kool-Aid with regard their responsibility when their products don't quite live up to expectations.

I live in central NJ, commute to NY, and have had very spotty VOICE coverage, never-mind EDGE and 3G. Its not gotten better over the last year for me, so there was no way I was going to give Apple another $200, and AT&T another $10/month per phone for service that is generally unacceptable.

My general line over the last year has always been: "The iPhone is great, the service sucks". Now I feel as though Apple should share some of the burden and responsibility because they are helping propel this myth. They know that AT&T is not on top of this.... my Verizon service was so much more consistent and reliable, it makes this service seem laughable.

Had I purchased the 3G, I 'd be screaming mad about this, heck, I'm still mad about how poor my reception is on my current iPhone, which I'll be sticking with until the service sees a genuine improvement.

I second that it's AT&T, not the phone. I'm averaging about 300 kbps here but I've seen it jump to over 1000 a couple times for an hour or so, then drop back down again. Tells me that this is a new area for 3G and it's being worked on. Also, a mile from here, it averages 800 kbps. Different tower, possibly a different overall connection, totally different speed. Same phone. Gotta be AT&T.

Thanks for the info everyone.
I was kind of expecting things to be slow at first with all the new 3g users. Hopefully AT&T will smooth things out quickly...god knows they're charging us enough!!!

I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store in Exeter, UK.

they gave me a good answer (at least for the UK using the O2 network).

sorry if I am teaching you all what you may already know (I did not know this).

there are 2 types of 3G antennae - HSDPA (the 'faster' one)
and UMTS (the 'slower' one)

the problem we have here in the South West of the UK is that the O2 mast is the slower UMTS one, so we have painfully slow 3G speed.

Maybe this is a similar problem in other countries.

Like I say, I have no real knowledge of this technology, but this seems like a plausible explanation.
