I called ATT to ask how their free wi-fi system works. Is the network secure, or totally open? Do I enter a special iPhone password? Does it automatically know I'm on an iPhone and lets me in with no pw?

LOL! They told me to call Apple!

Some girl says... we are unable to give any information now!

Get Yourself At&t Uverse For Free Wifi

I just got myself the AT&T Uverse which is their cable and internet service. Its a big router that powers is hooked up to your phone line making your internet connect AND your television connection. Eventually AT&T will offer VOIP (Voice Over IP) phone service (this is like Vonage) which is way cheaper than a regular land line. The best part of having AT&T Uverse is that you get FREE AT&T WIFI at ANY HOTSPOT! When you get to the login page, all you have to do is type in your phone number and then your password that you use to get into your AT&T online account. That's why I got this service so I can use their free WIFI. Personal laptops and iPhone can use this hotspot service AND that AT&T is saturating the market with their hotspots. So, if you already have AT&T Uverse, you have free AT&T Wifi BUT if you don't have Uverse and its in your area, get it. Plus you're NOT locked into a contract. Unfortunately, not all areas have AT&T Uverse. If you see a bunch of AT&T trucks and vans in your area, chances are they're installing their fiberoptics on your block for AT&T Uverse.

:)

finally!! now we just need the ability to tether and then we will really be talking. Has anyone stumbled upon any apps for that?

It's completely in AT&Ts interest to offload as much traffic as they can from the 3G network, especially in heavy use locations like Starbucks, so this move makes a lot of sense.

When you try to use WiFi you will get a browser screen with a AT&T logo and it will ask you for your phone number. That is it- then it will let you on the network. Its open for anyone that has credentials but your don't need them with an iPhone, just your phone number.

UK Equivalent

Just FYI UK iPhone users - don't forget that we also get free wi-fi from BT OpenZone hotspots.

Try your local Cafe Nero.

I wish someone would suggest to AT&T that they ask Apple and Google to help with their online mapping system showing hots spots. The maps they use currently are very poor.

Incompetent AT&T

This is a bogus "announcement." I can't get through the attwifi log-in page. So far, nothing 'just works' with 'the new at&t.'

(First post with my iPhone 3G. 7/11: 6 hours in line, then 5 hours with the best Apple Creative in the world. Thanks, Derek!)

If it's free then why does the website say "Once connected to "ATTWIFI" you will be presented with options to order AT&T's Basic or Premier service"?

And then you go to locations in the finder on the website and it lists prices? Starbucks $2.99 for 3 hours.

The site says free, but it doesn't appear the case. Yet maybe?

At least you get something in exchange for the extra 10 bucks a month and the extra five you now have to pay for texting!
Fair enough, but you are still screwed in most airports as "roaming" to another provider such as Boingo certainly wont apply.
Its so irritating to have to pay for wireless at major hub airports.Since it tends to be free at many secondary airports.

SBUX/AT&T WiFi

I was in the Starbucks in Kansas City, MO (on the Plaza) yesterday. My iPhone connected to the AT&T wifi there with no problems, no passwords, no logins. Wifi connection screen popped up and asked if I wanted to join.

The article has been updated to say it was a false alarm, I guess AT&T took down the page already and isn't ready for this yet.

Geez! Can AT&T do nothing right?

How does this keep happening!? How could a whole web page be designed - with details about a certain service - and put in place, only to have someone else pull it and claim "mistake." Clearly at AT&T the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.

I hope Apple is making a lot of money from AT&T, because AT&T's making Apple look the fool.

You'd think that a company the size of ATT would use a staging server for their web development instead of previewing changes on their live site!

that AT&T has once again posted information on their website indicating that all iPhone customers have free access to their more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots access across the U.S., including Starbucks locations:

That link just brings me to AT&T's wireless site map -- I don't see anything about WiFi sites/iPhone/etc. (same thing if I go from iPhone Alley's link. Am I missing something on that page or have they taken it down again? Doing a search for "WiFi iPhone" on AT&T's site gives results that all lead back to the site map.

The announcement posting was an error, again. Unbelievable. AT&T has clarified indicating that they have no announcements at this time regarding iPhone Wifi service. (The Macrumors article has already been updated).

C|Net said:
But Wes Warnock, an AT&T spokesman, told CNET News that the notice was published in error.

"We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone," he said in an e-mail. "The Web page was posted in error and is being removed."
