Good question. The lack of mention of any pricing makes me a little nervous. Who cares if the phone is $100 cheaper if 3G costs $20 more a month?

Steve said that 56% of people who wanted an iphone didn't buy one due to cost. If the prices for service go up significantly I can't imagine people flocking to buy them. The cost of service was actually what kept me from buying the original, I could care less about the one-time cost of the hardware. I've come around to the pricing, but not if it goes up even further.

According to Engadget, the data plan is now $30 a month extra on top of whatever your voice plan is! for businesses it is an additional $45!

HOLY CRAP!

I think ill be sticking with Tmobile after all!

Screw the iPhone!

patience, young skywalker.

AT&T site is down right now. This will be a big detail for me because I'm still within my thirty day return policy.

Well, if I want to rationalize it it's like I'm paying $540 for 3G 16GB iphone, which I would've paid anyway. I'm NOT happy about the price increase though. If they offer the lower price to current iphone subscribers who upgrade I might buy a used first gen model just to get the lower priced plan (those phones will probably be dirt cheap soon).

So just so I understand,

An 8 GB 3G iPhone will cost me 200$ if and only if
1. I am a NEW customer and sign up for a 2yr contract
2. I pay 30$ for the data plan (vs 20$ now)

It will not cost any more per month our house currently has 2 iphones on a plan and a third regular phone with 3G... They all have unlimited data and like 450 per month. In other words the pricing should be the same and hopefully I can pop out my 3G phones card and put it in the iphone.

no and no. there is no subsidy and you can even buy it and unlock to use on t-mobile with their $9.99/mo data plan

I agree... if I go buy this at an apple store then put in my current ATAT sim card all should be well...

Well if the price does go up (which was speculated) it won't go up for existing iphone users.

You can keep your current $20 unlimited plan for as long as you have service with AT&T and don't renew your contract.

What?! The base plan jumps to $70/ a month! That is OUTRAGEOUS! I am a current iPhone user who would not extend my contract - but I think to get the $199/$299 price point you have to? Way to be entirely vague Apple - jesus, worst news ever.

this seems weird, AT&T has other 3G devices and the data plans arent more expensive for those phones.

Just switch out the SIM card...

If nothing else this is just terrible sharing of information with customers. AT&T are keeping mum and Steve didn't address plans at all. Yes, yes - most of us want to hear about the hardware, but have a goddamn link on your website explaining the plans. You did for iPhone 1.0 - it's got me worried that they're trying to hide the increase. And why no mention on the $199/$299 price for EXISTING customers...what do I do? Sign a new contract? If I do - am I paying the higher prices...jesus, so many questions and that iPhone website they have up is completely glossing over them. :(

Id take engadget's posting of pricing with a grain of salt till I see what ATAT has to say...

Let's hope so - that's an extra $120/year to AT&T for...what exactly? Locking me into their service. Gah. Hopefully they mention this today - it's just stupid that there's no information on this.
