techcrunch has the full att press release confirming 30 data + 40 voice. Means I'd pay $10 more per month. Might have to go by an att store and find out if they're going to offer any concessions to those of us who purchased first gen recently. Got mine for 350 fwiw straight from att.

What?! The base plan jumps to $70/ a month! That is OUTRAGEOUS! I am a current iPhone user who would not extend my contract - but I think to get the $199/$299 price point you have to? Way to be entirely vague Apple - jesus, worst news ever.
the old one was $60 a month, 10 extra bucks, big deal, with 3G EVERY iPhone user is gonna tax the network A LOT more

From Engadget:
On AT&T unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, on top of voice plans starting at $39.99 a month. Unlimited 3G data for business users will be $45 a month, on top of voice. No word on how many text messages they're tossing in for that price. There's a minimum two-year agreement, but we're not positive what that'll look like for those currently enslaved to an AT&T contract -- you could be looking at a solid four years of time if you just took the plunge.

#1: Where'd they get this data?
#2: Now up to $70/month?!
#3: Hope this changes, or find some way to get fewer minutes.

Greedy little bastards aren't they! And they're going to make me re-sign a two year contract to get the $199 price for the phone. God damn bastards!

I tax the network plenty at 20 per month with my 3g phone by hooking it up to my computer.

Hmm...unfortunately I can't rationalize the increase of 10 dollars a month for myself (Just based on my own usage, I'm sure some of you can take greater advantage of 3G speeds)...so looks like I'll be sticking with the my iPhone 2G

So that means with tax that my bill will come out to around $85 for 450 minutes?! Are you KIDDING ME? I say we flood steve's inbox like we did about the iphone rebate - granted this includes another company that is less likely to budge - but I think it's worth the five minutes it'll take to write him. This is totally outrageous. And what a crock of **** from Steve today:

"It's so much cheaper"*

*With the increase in plan price it actually costs the same amount.

no and no. there is no subsidy and you can even buy it and unlock to use on t-mobile with their $9.99/mo data plan

I wouldnt be so sure. Apple's site stats the price "Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately." in the asterisk at the bottom

I would be interested in seeing how they enforce this, surely account checks wont be done in the apple store, so this may mean some sort of rebate on sign-up. Guess we will have to see.

That's how I'm TRYING to look at it... it's only $10 more. Just keep saying that to myself... only $70/month...

Figure it this way...

Old iPhone was $400 new one is $200 = $200 discount.

Over life of contract you will pay $240 more in data costs than before.

$200 savings - $240 data expense = $40 more than other iPhone

Please - this is not about "taxing" the network. We're already paying out of our bleeding noses for their service. It's insane that I HAVE to renew my contract to upgrade my phone and that in renewing I HAVE to agree to new terms that FORCE me to pay $10 more a month. It's not about the money even, it's not much, and I'm sure - yes I'll pay it. But it's a jerk of a thing to do, it's piss-poor customer service and it spits on loyal customers who already have a plan. Pathetic AT&T - pathetic.

That sort of makes me want to go back to my corporate discounted 31.99 plan with 450minutes and forget the whole iphone rather then more then doubling the price for the addition of unlimited data .....

Were talking close to $80/month for the base plan!

Not to mention I have to agree for another year of service.

If this holds true for existing customers I might wait and see what google offers with the android.

Sheesh, everyone calm down. You wont have to pay anymore if you own one, and if you are an existing customer eligible for an upgrade and discount on the upgrade then you can get the iphone for the suggest price. Also if you have a family plan or something like that then it should still be 20 a month.

In the past upgrading forces you into a new contract. It looks like the new contract will include higher data rates.

I highly doubt that.

No one that owns an iPhone now and is planning on upgrading is going to be eligible for an upgrade since their contract will not be up.

This whole data plan increase is BS....

Seriously? I sold my old iPhone in anticipation of the 3G iPhone and netted nearly 520$ for an 8gb iPhone....Now, I read that the data plan is increased to 30$ from 20$. Let's just say they HAD to increase it that much since 3G is faster.....How do they account for charging people in an EDGE area that much then? In Lansing, MI, where I am, there is no 3G. You can't charge me for speed I don't use.

If I were to somehow get my hands on a new iPhone without extending my contract, how would AT&T KNOW that I'm using a 3G iPhone in an EDGE area and increase my bill? Will they be keeping old iPhones at 20$ a month for data? Wow......Now I'm thinking about finding and buying a 16gb 1st gen iPhone....

Exactly - if you want the new phone you have to A) pay for it B) lock yourself in for another two years and C) pay EVEN more for that privilege to the tune of $10/month extra.

It's tricky and conniving...and we should let AT&T know that this phantom charge is bogus.
