Just out of curiousity - has anyone heard of AT&T denying you service based on credit when you're in the iTunes activiation process?

That would suck.

maybe someone can shed some light here...

I'm already on ATT Wireless (formerly Cingular) under a family plan.. my phone # is the primary number on the monthly statement.

Last month the 2-yr contract was renewed due to phone upgrades (blackjacks) for the 2 kids we have on our family plan. My phone was not upgraded.

What I want to know is if I pick up an iPhone, can I still activate it on our family plan as an "upgrade" to my current phone? (mind you the 2yr contract was renewed last month) Basically, can I just re-up the 2-yr contract?? I understand I would have to add the $20 iPhone data plan.. But my main concern is the contract... Help!

The simple answer to your question is: Yes.

You can buy and activate the iPhone regardless of how many months you have left on your current contract. The only affect will be your phone bill will go up $20 for the iPhone data plan, and your contract will be reset to 2 years from when you activated thee iPhone.

Now that it's out and we learned that the SIM card has easy access, will it work if I were to simply use my existing ATT SIM card?
What I've been told is that yes, you can do this, BUT you need to put the SIM card in BEFORE you activate in iTunes. Unfortunately though, your contacts will probably not be transferred.

Prepaid Info

This is VERY important for anyone on the prepaid plan. This is not stated anywhere that I can find but discovered it today and confirmed by AT&T and Apple. The iPhone data plan on prepaid does NOT include the 200 text messages. You have to pay an extra $4.99/month if you want these or 15 cents each! No where do I remember that being stated in the agreement during the iPhone activation in iTunes. In fact, all I remember is that it was presented as regardless of your voice plan, the $20 data plan for EDGE, Visual VM, and 200 text messages was standard for any iPhone activation - please be aware this again is NOT the case for prepaid. AT&T sticks it to you with less any time minutes, less N&W minutes, and no mobile to mobile when you get the equivalent prepaid voice package and then sticks it to you again when it comes to the data plan. When calling about this discrepancy, AT&T was very hostile and rude saying that the iPhone should have never been allowed to be activated with a prepaid plan (funny considering it's a built in option in the iTunes activation) while Apple apologized profusely for any confusion and offered to escalate the complaint about the misleading nature of the activation process after checking and double checking if this was indeed correct.

My bill?!?!

Any one else have a bill that is $122 with out going over on a thing? I know I'm not done with the month, but I thought I signed up for a 59.99/month plan +$35 activation fee which (with tax) comes to about 101. How do they get an extra $20? Oh, and didn't I pay the activation fee when I signed up? Appreciate some light on my issue

GeoHot, the leader of community of hackers working over hacking of communicator from Apple, has found out the module which is responsible for a connection of a mobile phone to the carrier, but to crack it, is not obviously possible.
GeoHot has found out, that blocking of communicator, allowing to use it only in networks of American carrier AT&T, has been placed directly in the GSM-module.
It seems that hackers starts to loose Hope on unlocking iPhone...

Probably Biggest Apple iPhone community

iPhone comes with it's own SIM card and you need to use that with your iPhone. No other SIM cards work with it... I guess they use a special one. So there's not really an easy way to transfer your contacts.

Maybe it's the $20 from your iPhone data feature. You can check bill details on the AT&T website.

Activate it using a program made for your OS (iNdependence for Mac, for example). You can then use the phone without a SIM card at all.

Hello Guys, I hope you can help me to find the answer here
I am an existing at&t customer for like 5 years, and I don't want to change my plan. right now I'm on a family plan and I'm paying only $100 for total of 3 cellphones. That's why I don't want to change my plan ... lol

I went to both at&t and apple store and I was told that I can activate my number but I have to choose a data plan for my iPhone. Is it "have to" or just optional ?? cause if I do so I have to pay not only $20 more monthly for data plan, but there is a huge increase on my plan rate. Besides, I don't want to surf the internet with an iPhone, and i have no use for visual text messaging.

can I just activate it without adding data plane and keep my existing plan and just using it as a regular cellphone without data plan ?

I think you could hack it with the various hacks that are out there that will enable you to use the IPhone with any SIM card (they do work) and then just pop the SIM from one of your existing phones in the IPhone, add a data plan, and you are off to the races.

The only potential problem I see is that of ATT monitoring their systems for people using an IPhone without an IPhone contract - and then wacking you. Other posters using T-Mobile have reported that T-Mobile knows you are using an IPhone but doesn't care. . .I suspect ATT will care and try and stop it.

Thank you for the response. So what you're saying is they want costumers to have the data plan! what if somebody do not want it ? switching to ATT is not enough for them? that's not good at all.

I'm in the same position, with an old pre-cingular ATT plan that is a real bargain family plan. If I 'upgrade' to their latest offering, I'll pay at least $30 more per month and get less minutes. If I could just add the data plan to my current deal, I'd be happy to do that, but to spend $30 more for the voice part PLUS another $20 for data and then all the applicable taxes.

I just software unlocked it and am using my old chip. The downside? No data and no apple warranty (apparently). Works perfectly though.

That's great ... do you have any idea what will happen after they release the firmware ? and may I ask you which software/ link did you use to unlock the iPhone?

Sadly, I have no idea what will happen after the firmware update. People seem to be sure that it will re-lock the phone and that would seem likely. The worst case scenario for people like us would be that our phones will not get any more functionality than what they have now. It's just important not to update itunes and not allow itunes to install any new software on the iphone. Hopefully, the next firmware will be hacked too and we just have to wait a few weeks to install it.

I'm pretty satisfied with the phone as it is, but of course bug fixes and increased functionality would be welcome too. We'll just have to see.

Here is the unlocking guide I used: http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/IPhone_unlock_OS_X_Part_1

It's very easy to follow and worked perfectly. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the useful information, and I agree with you. I appreciate the link also, but for some reason I can't open it up

I was doing some research on the internet and I found out there are bounch of guys like me who wants to use iPhone with their existing ATT plan, without the data plan:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19049898-iPhone-Without-Data-Plan

they simply get the phone, activate it and cancel the data plan couple of days after the activation and it seems they hav no problem with the phone right now ... does anyone do that here in this forum? I wan't to make sure that ATT will do so.

Silly question or two, if I may?

Are there any existing ATT users, that were in the middle of a contract, when the iPhone came out? When you purchased your iPhone? Did ATT make you resign to the two year? Or could you just ride out the contract and add the unlimited data to your plan?

Thanks!
