The more scientific among us (Apple included) say to charge it whenever. Older nickel cadmium batteries needed to drain completely because they would keep a "memory". Newer lithium ion and lithium polymer batteries (like all apple rechargeables have) are memory-less. They actually perform better if kept with a decent charge. Having it drain all the way down tends to have a negative overall effect on the battery. So basically, plug it in when it needs it. Not constantly, but not only at <5%.

For the record, I plug mine in every night and during the day if it needs it, which is rarely. :)

Doesn't really matter because it varies quite a lot, but I always charge it next to my bed before I sleep.

Great how iPhone 4's battery still lasts all day (if I don't play heavy graphical games).

I'll be charging it [ like a lot of you guys ] as I'm about to hit the sack and also, as needed, during the day! :)

Appreciate all the responses.. :apple:

I have noticed a few times watching my phone get to 3% then it turning off before going below 3%.

My iP4 sometimes does that... hits 2% and shuts off!!

I plug mine in every night before I go to sleep regardless of where my % is. By the time I go to bed my phone is usually around 30-40%.

I just charge when I know I'm going to be away from a charger for awhile. I'd say below 20% and I'll throw it on a charge.

During the week it goes on charge every night no matter what level it's at. On the weekend I may not charge it on Saturday night if I'm above 70%.

Is there any harm to top-up whenever I get a chance ?

I've been reading on Lithium Ion batteries and it's really confusing. Some say one should let it die all the way and then charge to condition the battery, while others are of the opinion that these batteries have no memory so it doesn't matter when you charge. Also, the latter believe that letting these batteries die all the way harms the overall life of the battery!

I'm not sure whether to let it drop real low or top up as desired ?

GOOGLE IT!

SOme people here do not know what they are talking about and you are asking them. Running your battery to dead is not good.

PLUG IT IN WHEN YOU GO TO SLEEP, WAKE UP AND UNPLUG IT

DONE!

I just plug it in every night before bed regardless of what % it's at. Been doing this through 3 iPhones and have never suffered any battery degradation on any of them. :)

I plug mine in every night before I go to bed. About once a month I let the battery drain completely.

I always plug mine before going to bed at night. But if the battery is somewhere below 50% and I'm nowhere near the charger, I get nervous :p
