Two suggestions. First, what my wife and I did was to pick a county courthouse in a rural area that we liked. It was on some sort of historical register. We then arranged for a judge to marry us.

Second, and very cool, my nephew had his brother become a "minister" with marrying privedges via some web deal. Try Google.

Not sure how much a traditional ceremony costs but if it's expensive, then there are definitely cool alternatives.

Maybe you could get married in one of those vomit comets, you know, while weightless.

Zig- seeing as you're in Michigan, why not get married in the Croswell Opera House in Adrian?

That's really cool. If I am back in Michigan when I get married (I'll be in Boston for college life, although I may come back to Michigan for MSU when I go to get my doctorate), I'll look at that. Marie thought it sounded cool, too. My mom actually works in Adrian, fancy that :p

Hey, everybody, just wanted to ask everyone for some possible ideas to help me think of stuff. Basically, my girlfriend and I are both atheist and as such, have no interest in a traditional Christian ceremony, especially not in a church. When we do finally decide to reap the tax benefits of a union, what could we do for our ceremonies? I've heard of people getting friends to wed them on beaches and stuff, but I wondered if anybody had some ideas.

my older cousin who is engaged is Atheist and she plans on getting married in a vineyard type of thing near the beach. not a bad setting if you ask me.

It's really pretty in there. I did a show there once when I was in college many, many moons ago- that would be about 21 years ago. ;)

My Mother has no part in this. Why not go in front of a judge and spend the rest on the after party/Honeymoon?

sounds good to me! but then i would assume that the groom-to-be would have already discussed this option with the bride-to-be before he started making plans for some sort of ceremony

The person you quoted would be the bride-to-be in this particular thread :p

Her parents would want some sort of catholic wedding, though, I'm sure.

:D yes, so I gathered......and why are you asking us about her wedding instead of her? She does seem to have some definite ideas on the matter.

Haha, no she doesn't. Neither of us do. We talk about this stuff, I just figured my good friends on MR would have some good ideas :) Like, Lee's recommendation of that place is a cool idea. I'm not looking for what we're going to do, per se, but getting a feel for the kinds of things we could do.

Very nice! Yes, that would be true.

Odd- I realized the other day that I'm now most likely closer to death than birth. Not a bad realization, just an interesting one.

O come on lee, your fit and JUST getting to middle aged.

Still a pup in my book :p

He's is right, I have no clue. I do like Lee's idea, though. What I suggested is simply easier to do than anything else.

My Dream Wedding

Ok, so I'm a gay guy, but still, I thought if I shared my dream wedding then maybe it would inspire you.

I would like my wedding set on a beach somewhere, I would like it to be quite cosmopolitan however, somewhere like California or Miami, not necessarily those but somewhere similar. I would have rows of folded wooden chairs resting on the sand. Some quite minimal flower arrangements and some sort of feature at the front. I'm thinking something like an oversize picture frame or something architectural that would make for an interesting picture and frame a part of the view.

All the guests would be requested to be barefoot on the beach. The Grooms would be wearing similar, but not quite matching beige linen suits, perhaps a light blue shirt underneath. I think I would ban black altogether for everyone else.

After the ceremony we would have a party, lots of cocktails being served on the beach, hanging lanterns, maybe some fireworks & perhaps even a classy BBQ. The when it was time to go, rather than a chauffeur driven car, there would be a classic sports car, on hire, that we would drive off to the airport....

I didn't read all the way through the thread, so apologies if I missed any of this - I don't know your budget, or your situation family and friend wise.

I could suggest a few things if I knew how large you wanted the whole deal to be, if you wanted family there, how much family, etc, etc.
