Atomic browser is fantastic. I'm using it now. I love love love the customizable multitouch gestures (three finger tap for fullscreen, 2 finger swipe right/left for back and forward and more) Plus I changed the color scheme to Safari and it looks much more professional. No more Safari for me that's for sure. No brainer for 99 cents.

Good question. what would you prefer:
1) Removing the bottom bar an relocate the bottoms to the top bar and bookmark bar

2) Add more options to the bottom bar. Keep the top bar and include an optional bookmark bar.

For me: number 1 for sure

Out of curiosity, on estimate, how many items does everyone have in their history? It looks like i'll have to make an option to turn off suggestion for people with a large amount of history. Of course, I'll also look into improving performance.

I have over "6 swipes" worth of history each day. (I guess one swipe does about 20-30?)
And there are 15 days of history in the historything.. Which I can't delete... (only way is deinstall/reinstall the app)

The Ad Block used in Atomic is different then adblock for Firefox. This is because the iPhone OS doesn't have regex. There are solutions out there but they technically violate the sdk agreement and I don't want to give Apple any reason to reject the app. I have automatically updating Ad Block on my todo list.

Ad Block will block the content when it is requested to be downloaded.

Thank you for your reply.

It seems strange that an UNIX operating system running on ARM wouldn't have something as basic as a PCRE compatible regex library, but you are correct as far as I can see.

Hopefully 4.0 will expose more complete regex functionality, but for now there appear to be two SDK friendly solutions available:

1) ICU Regular-Expression Support in iPhone OS 3.2.

2) RegexKitLite for 3.1.3 or earlier.

Your application is a great addition to the iPad and iPhone. I hope the adblock can become more robust to deal with more of the advertising to make browsing even faster. :)

that is truly a difficult decision. Richard, you have a unique situation if compared to Apple's browser Safari in that your app is a Universal app.

for example Safari on iPhone and iPod touch has bottom bar, Safari on the iPad had no bottom bar. A bottom bar is better for a 3.5 inch screen, not so good for an ipad sized screen.

I think whatever solution that offers the most user-choice would be the best. so I actually vote for both #1 and #2.

maybe do this: move the forward and back arrows to the top, next to the bookmark "star" which I would change from a star to an icon that more represents "bookmarks" like a book icon. Also move the "+" up there. change up the order a bit though, like this: bookmark icon first, then back and forward arrows, then the add bookmark "+", then the settings icon, and nothing else on the top. You have some room to play with because the URL bar does not need to be as long as it is. I would use the width of about 2 of your tabs (or a bit less, maybe 1.7 of your tab width) for these 5 buttons, which is about the same width Safari for the iPad uses for it's critical buttons located top left....However all this works great for iPad UI not as great for iPhone UI...size is everything, and the reason why Safari has two different UI's

Also, maybe a bookmark bar that can be individually toggled hidden or showing....

And maybe change the red close tab button to a neutral color that works with all of your theme colors—which would most likely be a grey or black button/white "X" or white button/black "X" (maybe lose a few of those theme colors)

I also think your browser is more popular with the iPad crowd than with the iPhone users. Soon, iPad users will be almost similar in numbers to iphone users, but it will take at least a year, maybe 2 to gain the momentum of the iPhone. for your app, if I had to pick one GUI to favor when deciding the interface for your browser, it would be iPad over iPhone. Or, eventually, write two separate apps, one for the big screen and one for the little screen. Or, essentially roll two apps onto one by greatly expanding the already large user settings...

Will iPhone or iPad OS 4.0 include a Safari Browser that has real tabs—at least for the iPad version? only time will tell.

Now my Atomic Browser is not keeping history anymore. Before it wouldn't clear the history. So i deleted the app and then reinstalled on my next synch. This fixed the issue with history not clearing. But now ever since then the history log is empty.

I checked to see if I had privacy on but it's checked off.

Do i have to do another delete/reinstall?

Some suggestions.

I really love this browser, and have been recommending it to everyone I know.

Here are some suggestions if you are interested.

1. The font sizing seems too coarse. It would be much more useful if the steps were finer. Right now the jumps are just too big to make it very useful.

2. It would be nice to be able to drag on the tabs to reorder them.

3. It would nice if the current active tab was better highlighted. When a lot of tabs are open it is hard to tell which one is the current tab.

4. Not sure if this is possible, but when the open tabs from a previous session option is set, and you had a decent number of tabs that it has to open on launch, it can take a long time to load all the tabs which is understandable. But one thing that might make the experience a bit better is to load the last current tab first on launch and then start loading all the other tabs in the background after that tab has loaded. This would have the effect of the app being more responsive if you have to close the app to copy something from another app, for example, and go back to Atomic. The tab you were on a before would load first making the wait much less.

Also, i agree that you need a way to donate. I love that your app is only 99 cents, and i know most people I have told about this app have decided to try it for themselves because it is only 99 cents, so raising the price would stop many from trying it. However I think the app is definitely worth more than 99 cents. Being able to donate a few bucks to you would be a great way for people like me to encourage you to keep updating your app.

YouTube when set to desktop emulation

For those of you having trouble getting youtube to work when you have Atomic set to emulate desktop safari, you might want to sign up for the beta version of youtube that uses HTML5. Just google about it to see how. This should solve your problems for the most part.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was testing with regexkitlite but decided to scrap it when I read some stories of apps being rejected because of it. Maybe Apple is being more lenient now...

To clarify the options, they are for the iPad only. I don't plan to change the menu bars for the iPhone version.

I agree about the x on the tabs and bookmark icon. I was playing with changing both of them this morning. For the bookmark icon, I will use the standard Safari icon. I'm either going to go with a plain "x" for the close tab button or a circle with an x. Both of the icons will have standard colors to fit the themes better.

1. The font sizing seems too coarse. It would be much more useful if the steps were finer. Right now the jumps are just too big to make it very useful.

I see your issue here. Unfortunately, when I had the font settings at a smaller increment, I received complaints that they needed to press the increase button twice. Maybe I'll shrink the increments by 20% or so.

2. It would be nice to be able to drag on the tabs to reorder them.

3. It would nice if the current active tab was better highlighted. When a lot of tabs are open it is hard to tell which one is the current tab.

I'll be updating the tabs in version 3.0. I'll try to make the active tab more visible then.

4. Not sure if this is possible, but when the open tabs from a previous session option is set, and you had a decent number of tabs that it has to open on launch, it can take a long time to load all the tabs which is understandable. The tab you were on a before would load first making the wait much less.

I've been looking into adding something like this as an option. If I add it, it won't be until after version 3.0.

I appreciate the donation request but it is not necessary. One of my competitors is ranking all the bad reviews as most helpful. If you would like to help out, rate the good reviews as helpful if you think they are fair. This would help me get more sales and also motivate me to update the app. I am mainly doing the browser because it is fun. When some idiot with 13 fake iTunes accounts decides to bump up every bad review I receive, I'm not having as much fun ;)

I'm all for helping in anyway i can. Love the browser and the work you do.

Thanks

Hmm, so I just jailbroke my iPad and Atomic Web Browser doesn't seem to be able to run in the background for my iPad..

Obviously this is all new and I don't expect an answer, but just wanted to see if anyone else out there had the same issue.

Edit: Now it's working w/ backgrounder! Whoop!

Great browser... thanks Mr.. Dev.

Couple minor suggestions:
1) When opening a new tab (+), set the focus to address bar and pop-up the keyboard.
2) Add an option that all links open in new tabs.

Thanks for a great app. Hope you make a good living from it.

Also there is a whole separate thread in the iPad section and in it I and a couple of others asked about Bookmarks not not having Atomic default back to start point. As is after you open the Bookmarks menu you have to select Imported Bookmarks and then Bookmarks Bar to get back to your Bookmarks. Have it default to where you were last or to Bookmarks Bar. This would save 2 or more taps each time.

Another minor suggestions:

Double finger tab, on a tab reloading the current page.

Thx for the great App!

I just ran into an issue trying to go to Outlook Web Mail through a secured site (https), it never loaded, no error message, nothing. I eventually closed the tab. Not sure if anyone can test this as well but it doesn't work for me. Also my cursor often (80%) disappears.

I also couldn't get Atomic to load my company's Outlook Webmail site (HTTP to HTTPS redirect). The tab just remained blank. I guess I didn't wait long enough for it to close.

The site works fine in Safari on my iPhone 3GS.

I closed the tab myself. 5 minutes to wait for it to do something was long enough. And yes, it works in safari. I also noticed when my cursor disappears i go to select text in a field like here on MR and it selects the form window, I'm unable to get the cursor back. Very annoying.

Font Increase Increment

Using the multi touch gestures to control font size is great, but the increment is too large. I realize that this has been discussed previously, however I may be able to she dsome light on the topic. When using Safari on iPhone, it typically takes a 4pt difference to get the fonts to a legible size. On the iPad the increment increase isn't as great. So, my theory is that while the current increase font command jumps to a ridiculously greater size, the iPhone increase is more tolerable. Is there a way to differentiate these two situations so that both the iPad and iphone versions can change fonts in a manageable and convenient way?
