ATT [and Apple] drop the ball: Please rant here

I waited in line for the good portion of an hour at the Seekonk ATT store. They only had 20 phones. The sales reps wouldn't give us still waiting in line a direct answer as to how many they had left. Thanks to them I wasted my time waiting in line when I could have been at the apple store. 20 phones on launch day? Seriously? Its a kick in the pants and after this I'm keeping my money and business with Verizon.

Yeah, that sucks! They could have announced the number of phones available so people wouldn't waste their time for nothing

If the store can only get 5 phones, that's fine. But they should tell person #6 in line that there's no use in waiting.

That's what the AT&T store I was at did luckily. Pretty much gave the "from here on back, you're not getting an iphone" speech. Followed by replies of "what?!", "Awwwww man" and "Quick, to the apple store".

Apple and AT&T need to get their act together

AT&T is sending folks home with non-working iPhones because apparently the activation process in iTunes is hosed.

ya apparently my account isnt getting registered till "later". They are trying to push people through(took 25 minutes when i got to counter) without everything being properly set up. I feel bad for the east coast when the west coast computers start going online.

They're under no obligation to tell anyone in line anything. Sure, it's a ****tard move on their part, but it's not as though there's some obligation for them to tell you.

I'm not saying they're obligated. The point is that the O.P. showed up at the AT&T store and got a "****tard move" from AT&T. So he went to Verizon.

I'm just pointing out that this seems reasonable to me, since others here seems to think he's complaining without reason. All I'm saying is, he has a right to feel that another company might make him happier.

I was first in line at my local AT&T store. The staff were super nice, but the computers were having the issues. It took me an hour to get out of the store, and by that time all of the 16gb Blacks had been sold out.

I'm still having an issue connecting my iPhone to the computer. It's stuck on connecting to store.

AT&T Cannot "Unbrick" iPhones

They're sending customers (including me) home with bricked iPhones and instructing us to unbrick them at home in iTunes.

Of course, when you connect to iTunes, there's an "Unknown Error (-9838)."

Freaking quality service. I now have no functioning cell phone.

You do have iTunes 7.7 installed right? I tried updating mine and it failed with an error like that because I had an older version. Once I had 7.7, everything worked perfectly.

yeah I'm running the latest. I have all these apps downloaded and ready to use, but I can't get it going. It's stuck on accessing iTunes store... i think it's just an overload of users.

i showed up at the mall where my at&t store is at 6:00 a.m. i was 14th online, i got a black 16gig and am currently waiting for itunes to start working and then later on in the day they guy from at&t is going to call me and tell me that he is switching my number over from my verizon phone (since they gave me a temporary number). i could be mad, but i'm just glad i got one. so now i will be playing the waiting game

How did this thread get stickied....wouldn't a good thread on people's observations of stock at there local stores be a lot more useful than a rant about not getting an iPhone on day 1 and swearing to stick to Verizon?

(I completely understand the rant don't get me wrong...and I ranted the same way when I iPod touch was late, but none of them got a sticky)

F$$k Apple And F$$k Att

so after hours and f$$$ing hours of waiting in line for a stupid iphone, i finally get in the apple store.

apple: "oh, we can't activate your iphone because you have a corporate account".

me: uh, no i don't.

apple: call att and ask them what the deal is.

me: ok.

dialing... 15 minutes after being on hold.

me: apple says i have a corporate account.

att: no you don't.

me: i told them that.

apple: well, let's wait in this other line for another f$$cking hour.

another f$$$ing hour later...

"genius": oh, yeah this has been happening a lot. sorry, we can't do anything. you have to go to the att store.

me: uh, so after hours of stupid line waiting, that's all you're going to say?

apple: yeah. get the f$ck out of here.

so apple, i extend my middle finger to you. i'm f$cking done with you for good. bitches.

I experienced a similar lack of any info scenario here in Floral Park, NY. I arrived at 8AM just to see how it might go. I could not do Apple store
otherwise I would have gone into NYC probably and made a day of it
as they seem to have it set up for the crunch and know they are in the media glare.

The manager guy randomly announced to the end of the line there "probably" would not be any stock for you folks. But he refused to actually see how many people online were for a IPhone vs just hanging out so he might know better even after we suggested that. I mean there were several groups of friends and family where only one phone was being gotten all around me. He also refused to say how many of any or all they had. He just shrugged at ever question.

He then said we could order a phone so it would be delivered to the store. I asked so then we need to wait online again for that and/or would we do the paper work/plan changes today or what? He just shrugged.

Blessedly at about an hr and a half into it he announced they were out of stock on the 16G Black.

They must not have had many as hardly anyone got in the store it seemed as the line crawled. Moving mostly when people gave up and left.

I'll maybe get one when the frenzy subsides next week or after as I am working the weekend. That way I can also hear all the reviews.

It was not AT&T at their finest for sure. My trusy Verizon vx8300 and Palm TX will remain in service for a bit longer ;=)

Sold out at AT&T by Grand Central in NYC. Not sure what I am going to do. I'm trying to buy two, because my wife needs one and we want to setup a family plan. But they don't allow to buy more than one, so how can you setup a family plan? Nuts. I already got an O.G. iPhone, I'm in no rush, but my wife wants one.

I can't believe I don't have an iPhone yet!!! ****ing ATT, hopefully the apple store will still have some at lunch and will be able to handle my complex family plan/sim switching setup.

Same here in Michigan. AT&T Plymouth store sold out by 9:00am, I was at the Westland store, they told everyone after number 50 in line they would not get one today, I was #40, after being outside until around 915am I was let in and they had one 16GB white iPhone left, I wanted the black one and they ordered it for me online and said it would be in the store within 3-5 days. Just like last year, only having 30-50 phones per store, but countless in a week. No problem here, I can wait a few days for the black, but I don't understand the additional 25-40 people who were still outside waiting not being told anything.

I would say the title of the thread fits the general consensus and intent the moderators want for the thread. Since they are pointing people to this thread who have posted "my store ran out" messages...it's pretty obvious they want this to be the "ATT ran out at such and such store". Basically they are trying to direct the intentions of the thread into a more constructive outage location thread.

So, here at the Apple Store, trying to activate via the little handhelds, they keep getting "Server Busy" errors. Unlike some of the stories above about AT&T stores allowing people to leave with un-activated phones, there seems to be no provision for this at Apple Stores. So, the line outside gets longer, but no one has left the store with a phone for a while.

Update: it just went through. Looks like things may be moving along now.

They're under no obligation to tell anyone in line anything. Sure, it's a ****tard move on their part, but it's not as though there's some obligation for them to tell you. My guess is they're not pleased with the rush of people, the fact that they don't get to rest until every single customer is gone, their hours were extended, they're frustrated and tired, and they probably don't care as much as we'd all like them to.

While this is their job and they should do it as well as possible, I'm certain given the hysteria created around their stores as a result of the new release is more than they care to deal with. So if some random employee gets some joy out of controlling whether or not the people in line know how many phones are left then so be it. Tomorrow is another day.

Are you fereakin serious? It IS their job to provide customer service and please the customer. That is what they get paid to do, not undermine a process if they are unable to handle some hysteria. I would be happy to be surrounded by excited people wanting to buy a cool new product. Sounds like you are a bitter C/S employee elsewhere. JUST DO YOUR JOB!

.....I tried a local ATT store (Auburn Hills, MI) at 6:30am...already a long line.

So, I went to an Apple store in Troy, Michigan....HUGE line. There were about 150 people in front of me and 40 people behind me. I actually waited in that line for 30 minutes, until I got confirmation that I HAD to go to ATT to get the Enterprise Data Plan, even on a personal (i.e. non-corporate) account.

Thankfully, there was another ATT store upstairs (in a mall), so I went and waited in that line. At about 7:30, an ATT worker was taking a tally of what people wanted in line and they presumably ran out of the 16GB Black and white two people in front of me (about 40-50 people).

So, I left to attack it another day....

Oh well.

Same problem here. AT&T was not specific enough with the info about "corporate accounts". I had no idea my university discount made me a corporate user. On the plus side I've learned a lot about IRUs, CRUs and SLBs today, woohoo. :)

Solution: Register a brand new account. So, now I have two AT&T accounts. And a new number. But, at least - AT LEAST - I was able to walk out of there with the damn phone (phones actually - I got two) after being line since 5 am. Now I still have my other account too. I will later deactivate the new account or the old. Since my contract was up, a I won't be charged for this. But, to me, even if my contract wasn't up, this would be a strong case for AT&T to make things right not charge me anything to deactivate the extra account. Oh, and I'll be calling AT&T to get my old numbers ported over to the new account too of course. That part is a bit of an unknown but I am confident I can persuade to make things right.

Not telling people standing in line that you're out of phones is a re**rd move? And the people standing in line at 6am for a phone that had all kinds of launch problems the last time are NOT re**rded? C'mon.

[sarcasm]wow, it's a good thing apple stopped making the 1st gen iphone 2 months before the launch of the iphone 3g to be stocked for launch day![/sarcasm]
