Wondering how it works. For example I'm on an AT&T-Next 12 month trade-in program, I owe 72 dollars. If I pay that 72 dollars off, can I upgrade my phone through Apple.com on pre order night.. and send my old phone back in when my new phone arrives so I still have a phone? Just curious. I can't get a straight answer online or through Apple/AT&T.

You probably need to call AT&T. I know if you purchase through AT&T on Next, you hold on to the device until you get your new one, then you ship back the old one. As for Apple, I don't know the procedure.

I did call AT&T and chatted them in (both of them). I got 2 different answers from each call. I figured I'd ask here.. because I'm sure at least one person who may be reading has done this or been done with their year trade in, and may have ordered through Apple.com before or been denied and had to go through AT&T (cause of the trade in issue).

Yeah, AT&T can be so helpful at times. I got 9 different answers from 7 different reps about the new Unlimited Plans in March. Yeah 9 answers from 7 reps. Not sure how that works, but they managed to do it.

I would be shocked if ordering through Apple was different than ordering through AT&T. IIRC, you had to return the device to AT&T within 14 days of getting your new device (ordering through AT&T). But again, I would be shocked if ordering through Apple had different rules.

Very helpful people.. that's why I feel its better to just deal with Apple in terms of pre-ordering. Which is what I'm "trying" to do this year and not getting a straight answer. I'll know the 13th when I pay off my device and add an i7 as a test to the cart, and see if it'll let me do it or not without trading it in first.

What? Not even the point of this thread.

But because you mentioned it. Apple and AT&T yearly upgrades are extremely easy, no fees, no hassle and absolutely zero risk of getting scammed. You get 50% of the device back free and clear. No risk. There have been years that I have done better than 50% and there are years that I have done worse than 50% selling privately. Especially a year like this where everyone is going to be upgrading. The market will get flooded with older devices and the value will plummet. This year is definitely the year to do trade in.

Yes, that is exactly how it works (you have it all correct). I have done it the last couple of years and will do it again this year.

Last year, I set up the trade-in on the AT&T site. I then preordered the phone through Apple. Apple will know that you have arranged a trade-in with the carrier. I had 14 days to trade the old phone in from the time the new one shipped. It worked great.

Since you have a 6s+ on your sig, is it safe to assume you got that in 2015? If so, once you pay off the $72, you own the phone free and clear. No need to send it back to AT&T or anything. Do be on the lookout for deals similar to last year's (e.g. $650 credit with 6/6s trade-in).

This is it. I would suggest paying the $72 before preorder so it's one less step. I've done this before as well so I know it works.

How do you pay it off? I owe a payment of $40 before I can upgrade. When I select the option to pay it off, I have to acknowledge an agreement to send my phone to them within 14 days, which I don't want to agree to do...yet.

How can I just make that payment to be eligible?

Yes you can, I did the exact same thing last year.

Pay off the upgrade fee now. Pre-order the phone through Apple. When you receive your new phone there is a prepaid shipping label included in the box for you to send in your trade in.

Check this.

This paragraph is in there:

Trade in your AT&T Next smartphone when you upgrade
Upgrading an AT&T Next® device requires the trade in of your smartphone. It must be fully functional, and in good physical condition. If the device meets trade-in eligibility, you have 14 days to return your old device once the new device has shipped.

Thanks guys. No it's an old sig, have a 7+

How long does the upgrade payoff take to take effect in the account? Is it instant, does it take a few days?

Also -- Do I have to pay it off right before the phone pre orders start (a day before) or can I pay it off say Wednesday and be fine?

If you go ahead and do it today it will show either later that day or the next. I did mine yesterday and now my line is just sitting there ready for an upgrade.

That sounds good. Gotta pay a payment, to knock it down to 36. Then pay that 36 off. Thanks for replying back!

You have to pay off the $72 before the pre-order. You have to pay off at least 50% of your payments in order to pre-order the next phone. This happened to me last year and I ended up having to pay off one payment in order to get the new phone so in August of this year I paid off The $72 and now I'm eligible to upgrade

Thanks I just paid it off. Is this normal to see? It says this after paying it off.

"Trade in your current AT&T Next® device to be eligible for an upgrade. Your device must be working and in good physical condition to trade it in."

Give it an hour or two to propagate within their system.

Mine was tough last year. I've pre-ordered through Apple the last few years, but back in 2016, my 7 Plus did *not* come with a box/return shipping label to send my phone back to AT&T via Next upgrade.

I went to a corporate store, though, assuming a could just give it back. Thankfully, I work right next to one. SURPRISE! They, for whatever inexplicable reason, wouldn't take my phone back and said I had to ship it in a box to their return center myself. They, however, were gracious enough to give me a shipping label. HOWEVER, I had to pay for the little box and bubble wrap at the USPS store. Super lame, even though it was only a few bucks.

Hopefully, this was an abnormal situation, but I guess I'll find out in 6 weeks when I (hopefully) get the X.

I used the box that the old phone came in to ship it back to AT&T. I always keep the boxes..... I figure it's nice to give to the next person who buys that phone (back when I was selling them myself.)

What about now, now that the phones coming out on October 27 ? They charge me after 14 days? Just curious how that works because all my iphone prep plans just changed

Ya..... I was all set to pay my last payment yesterday and pay hubby's off (one of his work buddies is buying his 7).... something told me to wait until today.... Now it looks like I'll be paying off not only his but mine... because if they are going to charge me for two more months... it's better for me to just sell my phone than to give it back to them!
