Everyone knows that ATT reps do not know what they are talking about. Every time I go and talk to one I end up informing them or showing them how to do something. It is a low paying job andf you get what you pay for.

Not all of them are clueless. The store I go to has this rep I ALWAYS go to for any help and he is the best with his information.

As far as phones go, you can probably take their word for it. They should know enough of the features and how to do stuff to get by. That comes to a screeching halt for Smart Phones. If AT&T's plan is truly to get smart phones in the hands of people, their employees need more training. Product knowledge can be fixed with that.

Here is my rule of thumb, if you want to know something with your plan or have a billing issue, the AT&T reps is probably right as that doesn't change much from one device to another. When you get to equipment, do your own research.

The next gen iPhone will be announced on Monday. There is too much history for it not to. Will it be available Monday, no way. You need to give the channel some time to absorb it and get some materials out to Apple Stores and ATT Stores. They just need a staff meeting and a pamphlet on what the heck is going on and they don't need to know a lick of what the phone does except that it's shiney. That's your (Macrumors) member's job when you go and pick yours up ;)

Show her the pic of the new iPhone and then tell her to pay for her own damn phone. Then make a gizillion day bet that she has to do what u want in bed if a new iPhone is announced on Monday. Then after rub it in her face

Most of these guys are just trying to hump another free phone and 2-year contract so they can afford a new set of black-out headlight covers for their N4S wannabe Honda Civic.

They might be hardcore txt'ers with a BT link to their boomin' car stereo, but they're definitely not techies.

doesnt it make you sick that those idiots can make upwards of 80k a year? by being ignorant ON PURPOSE to sell you a phone TODAY.

AT&T salesfolk = same category as car salesfolk. Full of BS, insist on you buying NOW, play games with info and pricing structures / taxes /fees.

A couple of years ago, when I was wanting a new phone, I knew about the iphone, I was kinda skeptical about it! I ask the salesman about it, and he did everything he could, to steer me away from it. I ended up buying the phone that he suggested. 2 days later, I took that POS back to him, and demanded an iphone. I have never looked back.
I dont think Att pushes the sale of the iphone much. I look at the brochures I get in the mail, and the iphone is always on the last page! I think, there network, cannot handle any more iphones, so they do push the sales! JMO.

Well the iPhone sells itself, but the sales quotas for other phones are much higher. They need to sell other phones too in the store.

this bozo at the store did you the biggest favor in the world. The ATT guy is concerned about one thing and one thing only, his pay check. You can use that to your advantage. Besides, since when do att employees get the latest scoop about unannounced apple hardware. I mean, 99% of apple employees aren't in the loop. He must be a special ATT salesperson.

That said, Apple has become a very predictable company. Historically, the final iphone information and release date is announced at WWDC.

So here is what you do- Do nothing; Say nothing. In less the 48 hours the new iphone is going to be all over the news. The last thing you have to do is point it out. The best thing that will happen is she will get to eat crow. Wait for her to bring it up. Trust me, eventually she will. It will take some will power to wait for it to happen. And when she does bring it up, just say something like "huh, a new iphone. who would have known?". play it really cool.

Then, when the smoke clears, roll back into the ATT store, find the dummy and ask him if he was the idiot who told your wife that apple wouldn't release the iphone for a long time. After he stammers out a stupid answer, buy a phone from a different employee. That should prove your point just fine.

------------

after I posted this I realized that this wasn't the way you should handle the att guy. here is what you do. start the exact same way. after he stammers out the answer, reach into your pocket and pull out the new iphone and say "big mistake". THAT should do it.

So I've been trying to convince my wife to get an iPhone......But she's insistent that she doesn't need all the cool features. And that she doesn't want to pay $200 for the iPhone. I told her just to wait till Monday (end of the month at the latest) and you will be able to get a 3GS for 99 bux.

Long story short, she's anti apple for whatever reason, she just thinks she doesn't need all "those" features. So she goes out and gets a Samsung Impression. Nice phone, I love Samsung products, but there is absolutely no documentation on the phone. She has an issue with it in not displaying names on people in her contacts list. So she goes to a corporate ATT store for help. Turns out her only issue is that she didn't have the area code in the local numbers. Not a huge deal.

But in the whole process she tells them that how I'm suggesting her to wait and get an iPhone 3GS. The ATT rep starts saying that I have no idea what I'm talking about, and how they aren't even sure if there's going to be a new iPhone out, becasue Apple keeps pushing back the release date because of all the problems they're having with the new phone....and that Apple's not going to release the new iPhone until October at the earliest.......

Now you tell that to my un-tech-savvy wife, she immediately calls me to tell me that I'm full of crap because the ATT guy has to know more then I do about the release of the iPhone.....

Seriously....would HAVE LOVED to be there when this idiot started speaking out his tailpipe. If that were true....that kinda information would be ALL OVER the tech news websites. It's just crazy how adamant this guy was about his information.

So, until Monday, my wife doesn't think I know what I'm talking about..........Her quote...."It's like you going to a Dr. and telling him he's full of Crap and doesn't know what he's talking about". As I told her....it's actually a lot different.....I'm an engineer, and pretty much monitor every Apple related news website..........I would say that I have a LOT more credibility in this particular field this this un-degreed salesman who's trying to sell you a phone to make his paycheck bigger this week.

This MIGHT be semi-off topic, but today they were talking about the new iPhone on the news. The title said "I-Phone 4G" (And just that made me cringe btw) and they said,"It will have a better screen, better battery life, and a front facing camera." Right after that they had a story about a kid who bought an app on his iPod Touch for 1,000 dollars on "accident." The reporter called it an "iTouch," which made me really annoyed. Really? A professional reporter even calls it by that name? I want to slaughter that name because it drives me crazy!

I'de make her a bet. Tell her you bet a new iPhone will be announced on monday and if not you will pled for forgiveness and sleep on the couch for a week. BUT if there is a new iPhone announced monday, she has to be in the "mood" all week. No if and's or butts. <--- (see what I did there?) You cant loose man.

Good bet. And offer to cook too.

i have a friend that works for ATT and i can confirm that the rep was not speaking out his tailpipe. They don't know anything ahead of the consumers only thing they have to go on are the same rumors that we have. Nobody knows for sure that there will be a new phone come Monday.

i agree somewhat. Im not saying that the guy wasnt feeding your wife BS, but ATT reps dont know about the iphone yet. My best friend is an ATT sales rep and she hasnt heard anything about it. They know when we know. And for those of you curious like me, she said they will recieve the iphone stock maybe 2 days in advance of release.

Don't argue. Make a bet. Tell her that the guy she talked to is an idiot, and when she disagrees, ask her if she's willing to put a friendly wager on it.

If you win, she has to return the Samsung Impression and get the new iPhone or the $99 3GS.

Seriously though, the Samsung Impression is a worthless piece of crap, my mom got it last year and HATED it. If she doesn't want an iPhone, she should atleast get an Andriod phone.

And when she's done with your sandwich tell her to iron your shirt!

LOL! Oh man those AT&T people are idiots! In fact, you'd have to be a special kind of idiot to be working at THE exclusive carrier of iPhones and be THAT 'effing clueless about what your talking about... I mean jeez, i know they are not privy to any additional info than we are, but damn! Do some basic research and educate yourself for chriss sakes.

My wife always gets into similar situation and they always happen to occur when I'm not around and I am always beside myself with things I would have said.... LOL.
