If they use large amounts of data while tethering they should, according to their contract, pay for it anyway so wouldn't necessarily see a drop in speed. If they jailbreak to do tethering then tough luck for them.

I was referring to the people who jailbreak and ignore their contract. And I don't really feel sorry for those people. I don't think this throttling is going to affect very many people who actually obey the rules and don't tether maybe a few get there through video streaming only, but that's probably less than 1% of the people who still have unlimited.

Throttling WILL affect a lot of people as we will have a better network with more bandwidth for those who do not abuse the network!:p

Socialism

I hear alot of you sounding like ATT is a government entitiy and that they should throttle peoples bandwidth for the good of everyone else. This is a bad position to look at this from. If I pay 80.00 for unlimited data I should, as a consumer be entitled under my contract to have unlimited data at the best possible speed that ATT can produce for me.
It is like buying a car. If I buy a lamborginie that can go 200 miles an hour, it is not the manufactures responsibilty or right to tell me where I can use the potential of that vehicle. I bought a product with expectations that were promised to me.
ATT is breaking their promise and to me violating their contract by throttling the data. Don't they advertise 3g and 4g speeds. Then that is what I expect.

Possibility of a class action lawsuit for ATT in the future if they do throttle.

I meant affecting them negatively.

That's not a good argument unless by your driving your car as fast as it can go you slow down everybody else on the same road. Because in the real world a lot of people bought service from AT&T with expectations of getting a certain speed and they are slowed down by a few people using excessive data, that's one reason why so many people think AT&T's network sucks.

Not our problem

You just validify my arguement. You are assuming I entered into a contract with you and all the other AT&T users. I entered it with AT&T. If AT&T can't provide what they promise because some of their users are using their phones and data to it's potential then shame on AT&T for advertising it like that. You should be mad with AT&T for throttling that other person data because that means they will do it to you.

Look at it this way. If you pay for 10 MBps cable internet service but you only get 500 KBps and the cable company tells you that the reason you only get 500 KBps is because your neighbor also has the 10MBps plan. You would be irrate! If you pay for 10MBps you expect 10MBps whenever you want to use it.

Too True

Key word. Unlimited.

Pretty clear and concise to me. Next up, the new definition of unlimited modified by ATT. I wonder if Webster will revise the worlds definition.

Right?! Unlimited unless someone else on the network is using their phone.

FaceTime is going to be next.... Verizon is fighting Apple to only allow it on their tiered data plans, if allowed to do that ATT will do the same.... Just like tethering.

This sucks! I know that there are discussions and it will be the carrier's decision as to whether to allow FaceTime over 3G, but to force the consumer to take a tiered plan to use a data-intensive feature really sucks. So basically it will be wifi only if you are on unlimited and you'll have the privilege of 3G use if you go to tiered. I'm starting to find this all so annoying.

I am an "average" user and have only gone over 2 gigs once (on a blackberry nonetheless...no idea how that happened)...but between iCloud, Netflix, Xfinity app...obviously I have more ways to use data than ever before. Ugh.

They're taking the fun outta everything. At the end of the day it's still a mobile device. I don't think it's necessary to charge customers $250 a month to access data and such. Even if the next iPhone/iPad allows me to talk to Jesus himself I think i'm gonna pass on it. There's gotta be a line drawn somehwere.

I refuse to believe 99.9999% of customers only use 500MB of data so there is no real need for "realistic data plans". How about after they launch all this data heavy stuff go back and do another study. 150% of customers will have gone over their little tiny data plans.

*Yes my numbers have been greatly inflated as with ATT/VZW numbers as well.

Using this analogy, tethering is like using different kitchenware/utensils to eat your food.

Carriers want you use the small plate that they give you (your mobile phone), but tethering is like using a huge honking soup bowl to grab food every time you get in the buffet line.

No it isn't. I'm not talking about tethering at all, I'm talking about how AT&T is going to throttle your MOBILE PHONE ONLY usage. This is literally like the all you can eat buffet gives you your small plate but puts people in front of you to slow down your ability to get to the food because you're eating too fast.

I don't have my AT&T contract details in front of me, but if they change the unlimited plan to throttling, doesn't that enable anyone who has a contract with AT&T to end their contract with them as AT&T has changed the details of the contract after it was signed?

Where did you get that information at?

Nobody I know uses Facetime, so I doubt allowing it over 3G will change much. Everyone I know who uses video chat just uses Skype which works well.

I don't see how people are saying (abusing data)....I'm on my fourth iPhone.... When I got the 1st one I planned on abusing... That was My main purpose for buying the iPhone in the 1st place... That's why I got unlimited data ! I didnt get unlimited talk ! I use more data than I do minutes because I work on the road... I'm never home and always on the go... I have never really been a phone talker.. Lol..... Once they start this dumb ****, I guess I will have no need for the iPhone or AT&T anymore.... I will miss u iphone

"Hey man, did you hear that they just put a stop sign over on Johnson & 5th?"

"WHAT???????? The city is basically making it illegal to use your car!!!! If I can't do 75 down Johnson, what's the point?"

it's more like making every street in the city a school zone and having to go 20mph :)

No, it's more like them making you use a smaller plate. You can still get immediate access to everything you could before, you just need to be more selective in what you pick.

I will really be dissapointed if they throttle the Data below 5GB.
I stream Slacker radio at work all day and watch a few episodes of family guy
on Netflix on my breaks. Currently use about 6-7GB of data per month. This is the reason I bought the iPhone. I really don't consider that abuse as I'm staying well within the terms of my contract. If I was tethering then that could be considered abuse but I'm not even jailbroken!

Agreed. And if the plate was that small when I signed up, there would be no problem. The issue here is I have a contract with AT&T that they are likely going to change to potentially negatively affect my usage without any compensation.

I suppose a better example would be...you go to the restaurant, pay a flat fee for all you can eat, get a regular sized dinner plate and can go get as much food as you want. All of a sudden the manager comes out and replaces your regular sized plate with a smaller one, says you can only use that plate and you will not receive a refund or any compensation.

Is this enough of a change to get out of a contract without ETF? I have the unlimited (5GB) plan.. I'd love to dump my iPhone 4. I'll purposely use a ton of bandwidth the next few months to prove this changes my experience.

When icloud comes into full gear and more and more people start to use it, I wonder how they will feel about having that small "plate". AT&T knows cloud potentially can be something a lot of people will use and why not milk those people for what they are worth.

I'm not big in clouds and I use wifi more than 3G. However if I were into cloud and apple wanted to start building their idevices around cloud then I would be a little upset for the reason above.

I have unlimited on both the iPhone and iPad
I rarely use much data at all
I am on WiFi at home and at work most of the time

Not sure how folks use such massive amounts of data

Just curious, you say you don't use much but then what's the point of paying for something you won't use? If you have extra money cool, we all have our habits I suppose.

WiFi anyone?

No kidding. I have fast wifi at work and home... which is where I am at 90% of the time. I rarely ever go over 1gig/mo on my AT&T data, and I average 2.5 gigs/mo on Verizon data. I think it sucks... but it doesn't bother me. I don't use my mobile data plans as my primary internet connection. If it improves stability when I do use my AT&T data... that's good enough for me.
