I just resigned my two-year contract with the unlimited data plan. Are they allowed to change the price I pay when I'm under contract, or will this change happen for me at the end of the contract?

Apparently they can change prices under contract, which is what they're doing in this case.

I believe they will do it to all unlimited data plan users by Feb 2016, regardless if you're in a contract or not; but they also did say you can switch to a different carrier and have the ETF waived if you do so within 60 days of the price hike while in a contract. Not so sure if they would null the contract and allow month to month, cause that's what I want.

I'm still confused how you came up with a Verizon unlimited data plan costing $240...
The person you quoted original is speaking to the overall yearly increase for both companies. $240 more a year for Verizon and $60 more a year for AT&T. That is until AT&T decides to up it another $5 six months from now...

No, don't speak it into existence! If they want to push me off UDP, they're going to have to raise prices higher than the 5GB plan. Until then, something something about prying and cold, dead hands.

See, for me its hard to even justify $35. $40 will probably be my limit. I only use 2-3GB a month on average. There are times that I hit 5-6GB, but never more than that. If my younger sister didn't use 20GB a month, we would definitely be on a mobile share plan.

Anyone have good luck with any of the other carriers? I've been a long time att customer but.....I pay $170/mo for my 2 lines (unlimited). Changing to the mobile share won't save me more but $5-10, not worth it!

Trying to decide what to do! $10 more for the price increase isn't end of the world. But some of the other carriers can save me a bit of money! I do live in a somewhat rural town so not sure about coverage with the others?!
I switched to T-Mobile about three years ago because AT&T and Verizon could not get me LTE data at my house. It would always be edge speeds below 100Kbps. With T-Mobile, I am edging towards 70Mbps lately at my house.

I do have 4 lines for $120 but that was a special they offered a few months ago, three lines for $120 and get the fourth free. I get 10GB data each. T-Mobile has been the best carrier I could have ever hoped for. I have not had one dropped call in all these years. Previously before my current plan, I had the two lines unlimited everything for $100. I rarely used more then 10GB in a month on any line so the I had no problem dropping that for the four line deal.

Last time I tried AT&T was about six months ago with a prepaid sim and it still had not improved at my house. I went with AT&T back in 2007 with the first iPhone. In all those years, I could never get data at my house and always had to use WiFi.

I don't care how evil people may think T-Mobile is or gimmicky they may be. The fact is is that I finally get super fast LTE at my house where no other carrier could do that, even now.

I use around 3GB, so their 2GB plan is too small.

Based on the wording that poster used it seemed like a comparison of how much more a user would have to pay over a period of a year with Verizon and their increase vs. AT&T and their increase.

How or why is your plan so expensive? I pay 174.00 for 3 iPhones, 1 iPad, a next payment, and 20 gb of data with rollover. I also get unlimited text and talk. Is unlimited data really THAT necessary? I had it and don't miss it at all. Just wondering
No idea :(

Currently I have my 2 smartphone lines and then 2 extra lines. The extra lines I am letting the contracts run out. Per my conversation tonight with the att people on chat....after my 2 extra lines run out my bill will still be $159.99. With the new increase in Feb it will make it $169.99. For unlimited yes...but that's insane for 2 lines :/

I live in a somewhat rural town, so not sure how good T-Mo might be?! And Verizon....well I've had them....they can be expensive. Gotta weigh my options here.

Between my 2 smartphones, I think the max data we've used is like 12g (that was when my wi-fi was not working at home). Usually it's below 10g total.

What was the two extra lines for? You can do the test drive, which is a free option, to check out T-mobile coverage, if you're really weighing options; I pay only $60 for one line with my grandfathered unlimited data plan with AT&T.

When the 2 lines run out you should be able to swap over to family data plan with 15 gb of data and the 2 phones you already have for 130 ish a month. Hopefully you should qualify for a FAN discount thru work if available. That saves me 22% off my main phone.

I got the email too.. It's $3.90 more after my FAN, and if I could get UDP on my other 2 lines I'd be happy to pay it on those too!
Don't be too sure about FAN discount. It could change. I don't think those on older 3gb/$30 get fan discount.

If you're truly at 2-3GB used I would absolutely consider selling your plan on Howard foruims. I did over a year ago but you can get anywhere from $500-1000 (price fluctuates heavily). You'd need to be with ATT for many years without a price change in your plan to make up that $500 low end estimate. eBay I have seen closing bids at $1200. I'd have a hard time justifying keeping the plan when talking that kind of money, especially with the low data usage you're reporting.

I still have the unlimited data with the 2yr contract because nothing else comes close to in terms of price. Only if they allowed hotspot capability, then that would be great.

I haven't experienced a hard throttle after 22gb of data... and I always get the warning text message every cycle... but even 22gb of data for $35 is still a great deal. Even if they matched the price of 5gb plan, you are still getting 17gb+ more. The $5 increase isn't a big deal to me. There have been a lot of increases in goods and services in the last 7 that I pay for. It sucks... but it's not like AT&T, Verizon, and others carriers are the only businesses that are increasing prices. If it keeps people employed and helps are economy... that's fine by me. If I can't afford some the goods and services I pay for, then I'll make changes. That's life... but enjoying my UDP as long as I can.:)

That requires me to give up my phone number though. Unable to do that.

If they wanted you off, they'd just discontinue it. Done and done.
I believe they are obligated by the terms of the contract to honor those terms as long as you are in good standing. So, as long as you are willing to pay their price and adhere to your end of the contract you can continue in the unlimited plan.

I do get the fan discount on both other lines
$25 2gb and $30 3gb..
That's good to know. I haven't checked FAn discount in a while.

ATT was getting stinger and stinger. They used to give me 24% off my family texting as well and took it off. May still be institution variation from place to place how FAN are applied

For those under contract. They can likely discontinue for those who are not under contract and those who are would basically need to switch to something once their contract ends.

It's still a bad move to give up unlimited data.

Do the simple math.

$100/15gb plus $15/line X 2 lines. Equals $130 (zero subsidy).

Their plan is roughly $170/month for 2 lines but includes roughly $20/month per line in subsidy ever 20 months. (Yes we are fully eligible for full subsidy every 20 months).

So that's like paying $130/month for 2 lines.

On paper that may seem to be an even switch.

But it all comes down to how much data on consumes and if one wants to tether.

If you live somewhere in "rural" area. I'd keep unlimited data. Chances are you are more likely to have LTE signal in rural area than broadband home Internet.
