makes sense...i mean they are getting more than enough of the subsidy back by me spending $250 a month with them. Not to mention, if they made me wait my full 2 years now, i may consider all of my mobile options then. They better keep me signed while im willing lol

No where to run. Sprint and Verizon both got rid of 12 month upgrades for their loyal and premium customers last year also.

Where are u going to go? Sure take it to straight talk and pay full price for phone. Makes sense if u have 1-2 lines but not when u have 3-5 lines.

if the price stays the same, it is $650 to buy the phone out right.

if you buy at the subsidized price you pay $250(upgrade fee) + $199(new contract price) + $36(activation fee) =almost $500. Personally, if you plan on staying with your current carrier and not changing your plan you should always go the cheapest route, but if you may change carrier....I think it is a no brainer to out right buy the phone for only $150ish more b.c the ETF would be higher.

It's 849 for the 64GB model, so I guess doing the early upgrade would be cheaper?

Can I still buy on apple.com if I do the early upgrade, or will I have to go through AT&T?

Edit: just checked, and you can do early upgrades from Apples website. :)

For those that want to know, it'll cost 649.00 for the 64GB iPhone 5 if you do the early upgrade.

At least that's what it'll cost if the subsidized iPhone 5 64GB is still 399

with the 4S they let me "early upgrade" which meant I pay the new customer price for the phone, plus $250, plus an activation fee, and a new two year contract. I expect this to be the way it is from now on when it comes to yearly upgrades. And that's ok, because a year later a well cared for iPhone still fetches almost its original price on the used market.

AT&T must've screwed up because my wife and I both got 4S's on launch day and now AT&T is showing that we are eligible to upgrade for only an activation fee. Nice how that worked out.

Yes, its a trade off.
Or you can keep the new line you opened, switch your sim to the new iphone and leave the new line with no data plan for $10 per month.

This sounds like the perfect plan, but I think all of you forgot that it is rumored that the new phone will have a Nano SIM. So, if you buy the phone out right, stick it on your plan, AT&T will know you have a new iPhone, which should be on LTE btw....

It shouldn't matter.
If you go to AT&T they will provide you with a nanosim.

But that wouldn't matter because if you switched the phone to the other line, they would only see the iPhone on one line and not the other. SIM cards can be replaced for free at an AT&T store also.

I got my 4s about a week after launch and it is currently showing I'll be eligible for the $449 price in October or the $199 price in may next year

Hmm. Maybe it's because you pay more on your bill than an average person pays.

Thanks for the reminder to check upgrade dates.

And funny enough, one of my eligible lines (should have been eligible in May last time I checked a few months ago, another line was upgraded the same day and is fully eligible) was actually moved out of eligibility to October. We may have gone to the Apple Store to replace a defective iPhone 4S on that date in October of last year.

Are warranty exchanges at the Apple Store supposed to reset the eligibility or do I have a case with AT&T to roll back the eligibility date back to May (or at least today?)

Thats for people who used to get yearly upgrades with a big enough contract. He's talking about calling customer service and having them move your upgrade up which they can still do. Especially if you've been with them for a long time, always pay your bill on time, and threaten to pay the ETF and switch carriers because it's cheaper to do that than pay the $250 early upgrade fee.

So, you are saying that it is cheaper to pay for the phone outright without a contract?

I just got off the phone with AT&T. My contract isn't up until December but they said I will be able to get the new iPhone at the standard 200$ price with a 2 year contract.
