Hi,

I have this annoying issue with the ATV 4k. My TV is an Sony A1 55" OLED. The built in Netflix app works flawlessly.

When watching Netflix content via the ATV 4k with dark scenes such as some scenes in Godless or Punisher, every time the subtitles show up, the background flashes. It's like the contrast changes for the full image. Perhaps to be described layman like as if the "blackpoint" changes. It ruins the Netflix experience. Anybody have similar issues?

Best regards,
Johnny

I'm with @priitv8 that it is most likely the ATV app. I noticed while watching Bright a few weeks back that different scenes would cause different brightness levels (watching the letterbox black bars get brighter in difference scenes). I've not watched enough HDR material through Netflix yet to know if it's the app or the movies themselves, but I don't recall seeing this in any iTunes movies I've watched or UHD discs through my Oppo 203.

I'd also guess that possibly when the subtitles are being added it may be taking it out of HDR mode and possibly just doing an overlay so it's really SDR? Seems like we'd be hearing about that more if that were the case, but just a thought.

And the Sony doesn't have ABL or power saving modes enabled, correct? (Assuming no or you would see this on all sources).

I do not believe even OLED is able to transition that fast between HDR and SDR modes.
In HDR mode usually subtitles (or white text in general) tend to be overly bright, so actually their white level needs to be pulled back in either mastering or during rendering.

Very valid point. Having an OLED and ATV4K using the "Match HDR" settings the delay is at least a full second if not two. My comment is retracted.
