trying to get my new ATV remote to work with my receiver. Weird thing is I've always used a universal remote and the remote that came with the receiver has never controlled the volume to it (strangely). I have a direct tv remote that controls my reciever just fine but I can't seem to teach the IR on the ATV4 remote to learn the proper signal for my receiver. So I must use two remotes if I want to enjoy Apple TV. Does anyone have a work around? I miss the days of typing in a code and just letting the IR do its job.

Hope this helps & not trying to be repetitive. I personally own 4 of the new Apple tv4 & this has worked on all 4 with one being hooked up to a yamahah receiver, zvox speaker, & the other 2 are connected to bose speakers.

Go to settings:
Remotes & Devices:
Under Home Theater Control choose volume control
then choose learn new device.
After this you will notice a screen with a plus & minus sign.
The key is to place both remotes on a flat surface facing each
other.

Now press & hold the volume up button on your remote until the progress bar
goes all the way across the screen at which point the screen will change & then press
& hold the down volume button until the progress bar goes across the screen. This takes
a few seconds & works great for me.

Honestly i think this is more of a placebo-effect:D The Siri Remote hast an IR blaster NOT a receiver. So you should point the remote towards the Apple Tv and not the Siri Remote!

Maybe so, I cannot speak to other methods but with so many people having issues I just wanted to share what worked perfectly the first time for me in 4 different setups.

Same problem here. I have Pioneer VSX-821-K receiver and Siri remote volume buttons don't work with it. I tried all the options ('auto', 'receiver with IR', manually teaching volume buttons from original receiver remote).

There are many reports of volume buttons not working with pioneer receivers. Some of them report it occasionally work. In my case it never worked. Looks like some issue related to some key-repeat issues. I hope Apple can fix it software.

This is the main annoyance with ATV 4 so far for me. ATV 4 works with universal remote, but some of the functionality is not available without Siri remote (and Siri remote is pretty nice to use).

Pretty much the same deal with me. Pioneer VSX-819H.

Bumping this old thread. I had exactly this problem with my old Pioneer receiver. Somehow I solved it and it worked great. I bought a new receiver (Marantz) so my old Pioneer moves into my daughter’s room along with the Apple TV 4K. It has worked perfectly there as well, controlling the receiver volume via IR.

Yesterday I physically switched my daughter’s Apple TV 4K unit with the one I had in the tv room. (For reasons not important to this thread).

Now the problem is that her “new” Apple TV and Siri remote doesn’t control the receiver volume via IR and I have NO IDEA how I fixed it the last time...

Does anyone have a solution?

edit: in case someone from the future has the same question, I found the answer here:
