I noticed mine doing the same thing (the video would stutter a little too). It would come and go, but would definitely go away if I forced the discrete graphics on. I wound up doing a wipe and reinstall early last week. That seemed to take care of the problem. I'm running 10.8.2 right now and I have no popping.

After you did your wipe and reinstall, did you restore your applications with Time Machine? Or, did you install all your applications from scratch?

I reinstalled everything from scratch. I didn't mention earlier that I formatted the SSD and installed 10.8. No audio problems after that. Then I migrated to 10.8.1 then 10.8.2 all with no further audio popping/video stuttering.

I just tested 10.8.2. Was great for a hour but it started happening again. Less then before but the popping still occurs. It's all random so it can happen at any given moment unfortunately.... : /

i tried it now about 100 times to reproduce your issue
but nothing happens (i use laptop whole day, audio about half the day)
never experienced anything like that
perhaps you sould think about the possibility its no software issue

wrong. this IS a software issue. This issue might not show up right away. Sometimes I can go a day without any popping/crackling, and then it just sets in. In bootcamp I have no been able to reproduce this once and I'm in bootcamp a whole lot (FL Studio for music production). It's a software issue in mountain lion specifically with the Intel HD 4000 card. (likely the drivers). Get gfxcardswither and set ur video card to the intel one. Then playback music in itunes or something.

I am sure it is software also. Once I reinstall 10.7 on my iMac the problem went away and has been away for a few days now. I can play DiabloIII, YouTube and iTunes without any problems.
When 10.8.2 comes out I plan to follow duffyanneal's suggestion and format the SSD and install everything from scratch.

I think this issue has occurred on just about every Mac I've owned. :p

I didn't think it was an issue until you brought it up.

i've noticed it happens in youtube and vlc occasionally going from fullscreen to small or vice versa

Sorted......kind of

Its definitely the graphics switch problem.....really annoying. Anyone know if this could potentially affect traktor the djing software, as songs stopped on me using it before ?

It only happens when running off of battery power, but this definitely hasn't been fixed yet.

Same popping issue here, not only on battery power. Base model rMBP I've had since July... Really annoying for a musician...

I have this issue, and booked a genius bar appt for monday. Having now seen this thread, i've unticked the auto switch gfx box, so we'll see if it happens between now and 3:30pm tomorrow when I need to leave for the store!

Same issue here 15" retina MBP have audio popping/stutter issue with "Automatic graphics switching" set to on. If I uncheck it, the issue goes away. Same thing happens on battery or power adapter plugged in.

I had this too with my new 15" rmbp. I rebooted the computer and haven't had any issues since. Good to know its related to the graphics switching! Thought it was my speakers giving out! Phew.

I had the same thing and I found the easy way to avoid it. I've posted the fix some time ago but it eventually got lost in threads.

The fix is very simple. Just download gfxcardstatus, and run settings on integrated only when on battery, or discrete only when plugged in. Program will not let switching between graphics, and there won't be any audio cracking anymore!!!! :):):)

Bummer; the latest version of the app no longer supports this function.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

Hey, maybe APPLE will address this issue!

Or not.

Just got a new 13in rMBP, it's doing this on anything I play, anyone heard of a fix other than the graphics switch dealio? One of the big reasons I bought a Mac is the lonnnng battery life.

SMC Update fixed the issue

Hi guys! It looks like our complaints got to Apple and it's finally fixed! With the new 10.8.3 update and the SMC update, I no longer have issues with my speakers, fans, cuda or low frame rates!

Oddly enough...

The very latest of Apple's SMC update introduced this problem into my until then spotless rMBP.

I can only hope it goes away at the next OS X or SMC update.

It is rather annoying.

I bought my rMBP in july and I have experienced this issue since I think september. At least that was when I noticed it. I can never really reproduce the issue to 100% and it is a bit random when it occurs but as others has said. It seems to be connected with the switching of graphics. Nothing has changed for me with the software and SMC updates from Apple. I have spoken and emailed about this issue with tech support on Apple and they said it wasn't a known issue so I don't really know what to do. I tried formatting and reinstalling ML from scratch but it hasn't helped. This problem is really annoying when you want to use the computer to play music in proper speakers or looking at movies/tv-series. Sometimes the sound can even disappear for half a second and it can be very noticeable but sometimes it's just a little or nothing at all. This issue needs more attention and I think lot's of people has it without noticing because it can be very sudle. But when you do notice it, it's annoying as hell.
