This is all nice stuff, but just give me a friggin'

**EXTERNAL KEYBOARD** (bluetooth or wired)

for the iPhone already!!

That is freakin incredible!! I'm having a hard time believing my phone is capable of that.

Wow.

Speculation time! Okay, so does something like this, which will quite obviously bring in a flood of apps that would find this feature useful, hint more towards an iPod touch with a camera? Honestly, there are already many people who can't get their app to the iPod touch users, which likely makes for more than half of the app store customers, due to the limitations of said iPod's hardware.

Anyone agree?

Agreed. The iPod Touch and iPod Touch Nano will have the cameras, GPS, et al to make augmented reality app work with it as well.

Yep, this needs to be associated with it's own hardware... iGlasses. Can we start a "when are iGlasses gonna be released" thread to replace the tablet thread now??

A bunch of New Yorkers and tourists walking around holding up their iPhone to guide them around. Peripheral vision will be a thing of the past.

All kidding aside, this is some cool-as-$*!& tech stuff. I can't wait to be one of the dorky tourists viewing the augmented world thru my iPhone!!

Heh... this was my "dream a little dream" post on that. Be sure to click the links...
This is literally the future. Augmented reality is as significant a milestone as Google's "voice control" features in the Google app for iPhone. I just wish someone were actually capable of developing such a thing for supported APIs in the current iPhone OS SDK.

Here's where I see augmented reality going on future iPhone OS's:

Create Bluetooth enabled shades that make use of Apple's new accessory support, and features a lanyard allowing the iPhone/iPod Touch to hang from the user's chest. Augmented reality data will appear overlayed on top of user's normal vision. Mini-camera relays live data to the iPhone/iPod Touch.

The great part of this, is that the actual app, will send real-time overlays to the viewer from the Internet. Moreover, it can take voice command, display full-color images, and relay up to the minute information.

USER: (Walking in a park sight-seeing with a friend)
FRIEND: "Hey, I wonder how long that statue has been there?"
USER: (Pulls shades down and clicks button on shades, app is already running while phone is asleep in locked mode) "Hm. It says here that's the famous Balto statue by Fredric Roth erected in 1925."
FRIEND: "Oh yeah... Wasn't there a movie?"

USER: (Clicks button on shade again) "Cross-reference movie." (Releases button) "Yup. 1995, Amblin Entertainment. Aw, hey... it got good reviews, we should pick it up tonight, or at least Netflix it."

FRIEND: "Cool. Anything else worth seeing around here?"

USER: "Hm. It looks like the Tisch Children’s Zoo is just over that hill."

FRIEND: "Great. How much time do we..."

USER: "Also says its closing in 30 minutes."

FRIEND: "Hey, that's pretty handy! It says it closes at 5pm?"

USER: "No... it actually says 28 minutes, in bright red, under the name! I was kind of surprised." (Chuckles)

FRIEND: "Can you take a snapshot of Balto? I want to show that to Ellen when we get back. Here, let me stand next to it."

USER: "Perfect." (Holds button on shades) "Snapshot". (Releases button) "Ok I got it, let's head home. Hey, it looks like there's a Redbox at that McDonald's over there on 1st Ave, near the subway entrance. We can grab a quick flick before we hit the subway."
As long as the system contextualizes the information, and is "predictive", it helps get information to people MUCH faster than typing it in, and brings in answers quickly and conveniently with minimal effort from users.

Holy %$^&#*@ #%$& $#!7!!!!! That is seriously amazing. I cannot believe where we are heading when it comes to tech!

So.. this bears the question.... when is this implemented into a pair of eye glasses?

watch, this is whats going to happen... this will be implemented in to some sort of glasses equipped with bluetooth and paired with the iphone.

How the hell would you get a GPS signal in the subway? I bet it's a struggle to get a GPS fix even on the streets of Manhattan.

And I would think there would be a hell of a magnetic field coming from that subway to through the compass off.

The point of the app is to find subway stations. So if you're already in one, you won't use it. And NYC is more than just Manhattan. It has 5 boroughs: Brooklyn, The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Subway service goes into all boroughs expect staten island. Besides, I get great signal service from my Garmin GPS in nyc.

hmm, this seems awesome and all but isn't this going to completely alienate a lot of the current ipod touch users(1G and 2G users) because they don't have cameras or the gps? not everyone is going to rush out and get the new ipod esp. in this economy.

Am I the only one who isn't thrilled about the prospect of a crowded subway platform and people walking around with iPhones in front of their faces? ;)

Now if we could pair this concept with something like these, we'd be cookin' with Crisco!

I was having a bit of buyer's remorse having upgraded early to the 3Gs especially with my 3G unsold (still), but this makes up for it. Amazing. I cannot wait!

And I second the iGlasses. Perfection on naming, too!

I also 2nd the external keyboard. As seemingly anti-Apple as it is, I was really hoping for a landscape slide out keyboard on 3Gs. The softkeyboard is amazing, but I'd like the option of having the entire screen usable instead of being a softkeyboard for things like the Notes app.

whoa

Apple will eventually come out with a iphone nano that will just hook up to your glasses like a headset attaches to your ear. then we'll all have huds like video games

(someone beat me to the punch)

Very cool indeed. I imagine that within a year of this technology going mainstream we will start to see 'airvertising' come to this medium. Could be an interesting new format for advertisers and customers.
