I can't wait to see what else they can do with this technology. Map+compass+accelerometer etc etc....

A couple points:

It certainly seems like the next iPod touch may very well include a GPS, video camera, and magnetometer just like the iPhone 3GS. Maybe Apple has decided that the iPod touch should simply be a cellphone-less iPhone, much like the 1G touch vs the 1G iPhone (except for the camera). It really wasn't until the 3G iPhone vs the 2G touch that they became differentiated, both hardware and software wise...(except for the external volume controls/speaker). Although I could conceivably see iPod touch sales eating away at iPhone sales if the iPod is only a couple hundred more yet requires no contract, only at the expense of no cellular connection...

Now in terms of augmented reality possibilities, how about a turn-by-turn GPS app that uses the camera to see what lane you are in and overlays specific lane guidance and turns on top of the "real world" live video. Probably would cause an exponential increase in traffic accidents...but that would be quite awesome.

Or how about shopping for, say, digital cameras in Best Buy and having the cameras be flanked with virtual details that would allow you to read reviews and comparison shop via an overlay on your iPhone? That would be pretty awesome as well.

hmm, this seems awesome and all but isn't this going to completely alienate a lot of the current ipod touch users(1G and 2G users) because they don't have cameras or the gps? not everyone is going to rush out and get the new ipod esp. in this economy.

Interestingly enough, Apple's 3Q earnings beg to differ. And their guidance for 4Q isn't predicting any slowdown. So maybe they can convince the 1 & 2 G iPod touch users to upgrade by offering not only new hardware, but by promoting attractive new software that will only work on the new devices. Heck, even with the iPhone -- these augmented reality apps require the compass and probably the upgraded video camera to work...things only available in the new 3GS model. Remember, the 2MP camera won't work for things like barcode reading...something I fully expect to be a large component of much of this augmented reality stuff.

This is all nice stuff, but just give me a friggin'
**EXTERNAL KEYBOARD** (bluetooth or wired)
for the iPhone already!!

You will have to ask 3rd parties for that. With that attitude I will give you nothing and you will like it.

I like the way you think mister.

This opens a whole new world of possibilities (wow that was cliché) for real world interaction.

To be fair, augmented reality apps have been out on phones circa Nokia N95, so this is nothing new and exciting.

Could this also be why TomTom haven't released it's version for the iPhone yet? Waiting for 3.1 to be released? Let's hope it doesn't crash as much and is as useless as Navigon!

Wow, pretty cool. Although I don't know how much better than Google maps this is. After all, with the map, you don't have to hold up the phone and look like an idiot on the street. You can just look at the phone "on it's back."

This will forever change how people interact with electronic devices, and also change what people expect from them. I've been watching the "clandestine" development of augmented reality on iPhones over the last several months, and its possibilities are really exciting, especially for gaming. I'm really glad Apple is officially sanctioning this. The next few years are going to be pretty wild.

¿Crapper Cam Next?

Sounds like the broad recorded this hovering over a toilet in a subway bathroom (You don't want to actually sit on one, do you?) on her lunch break. Holy Crap, Batman. Let's get some professionalism pimping our product in here... in here...in here... in here....

LOL. "Broad" What is this the 1950s?

I will buy augmented reality apps

How the hell would you get a GPS signal in the subway? I bet it's a struggle to get a GPS fix even on the streets of Manhattan.

And I would think there would be a hell of a magnetic field coming from that subway to through the compass off.

ahem, once your in the subway. You don't need to find the subway. And I assume that if you are looking for another subway you aren't going to stand in one place until you have determined your direction. (you really won't in NYC, you keep walking or you get run into)

"I bet it's a struggle to get a GPS fix even on the streets of Manhattan."
no, it isn't.

Why is a magnetic field coming off the subway? it isn't a maglev. LOL metal doesn't equal magnetic field. lol lol lol

anyway, I will buy augmented reality apps such as this, what a perfect way to use so many of the devices features all at once. I think augmented reality apps such as this will be the very widely used in the near future, icons on a map is alright but this could be better in many cases.

Um....it reads them just fine apparantly

I've tried it on mine and its pretty amazing, It'll find pretty much anything.

My only concern with these AR apps is the battery life. Sometimes I can barely make it through the day on IM apps. Adding this to the mix and if you use like a tourist you better carry a charger around with you. Or we can get a better battery.

The focusing box that constantly pops up is really annoying
It's a side effect of the way the app was implemented using OS 3.0 — you'll see exactly the same thing if you try Email 'n Walk or any app like that on a 3GS. My understanding is that it can be disabled under OS 3.1 with its official route to using the camera.

I'm surprised people are so surprised to see this technology. This tech has been around for quite some time now, and other phones out there already take advantage of it.

I've even spent some time trying to do it with the iPhone, however, dropped the project since there was no sanctioned way to continue it with apple's restrictions.

I'm glad to hear apple will finally allow this.

While it is very cool, they've been doing this in Android for a while now. Glad Apple's finally opening up the APIs.

Uh, wow. I sure wish I had that for my trip to the city back in sept.

I guess it is time to upgrade the 2G and get off T-mobile prepaid.

My theory behind all of these new gps products is that they are great. However, they are making life just a little to easy. Pretty soon, when cell service is interrupted, people are going to freak out because they will not know where to go. Back in the day, you just went and found your way. Nowadays, the tom-tom takes you close to your destination, drives you in a circle or to then you arrive at your destination.
