What I am curious about: what would happen if the tech company simply can’t provide the information, since it does t have it? For instance, if messaging uses end-to-end encryption? Would designing and implementing such mechanisms become illegal under laws like these?
And btw, comparison with the old-school communication is silly. There is nothing preventing me from using an old-fashioned code in a paper letter. And I am not aware of any international law that would force me to reveal the code to the police. Or is the idea to make sending coded letters illegal?
Siding with the "I love how tech works" as a way to side with privacy always. You can't give up what you don't have..
When a user tried that, they go to jail... When a company tries the same, they get a slap on the wrist and let off the hook
So the question is why does the law take sides with companies so easy in Australia? Perhaps we say see companies go out of business as so-called 'drastic' measures if they cannot provide what law enforcement needs?
You could probably do this to small companies easy enough but large ones like Apple who would be able to throw throwing money to make a problem go away.
Look at the U.S and see how its happened... They give up immediately with Apple, because they know they can't win and go another route.
“We don’t want you guys to build a back door or key, we want you to build a really strong door and provide us access to unlock it.”
Are you freaking kidding me right now? All the curse words! These guys are either idiots or know exactly what they’re doing—spinning it.
We like saying this to governments, but other users who do NOT work for the government ? "Oh sure, no problem, i'll hand over just about anything because your no professional, but i can see you say you do good encryption" to other people outside the government. eg Apple, Dropbpox, Lastpass. etc.
its all gone 180 degrees. We don't trust the governments with 'power' with we dot trust the larger market, the same ones who don;'t have government type experiences.
People on the outside would have allot better to do more damage personally than the government, because there would be a backlash otherwise...... Just look what happened surrounding the NSA leaks.. One it was known in the public,, things changed for the better didn't they?
