Pic of the father, in case you haven't seen it yet.
He kind of looks like Vincent Price.

On a psychological basis, the two older children who are well into their late teens, are never going to be able to adjust to something we would consider a "normal" life. Due to their captivity there is so much they wouldn't have learnt - social interaction, spacial awareness etc and it's too late for them to learn it. That developmental window ended a long time ago. There may be hope for the 5 year old who was never allowed out, but they may still have long term behavioural issues. A truly horrendous case.
"Officials had said Fritzl faces up to 15 years in prison if charged, tried and convicted on rape charges, the most grave of his alleged offenses under Austrian law."
I'm not familiar with Austrian Law. However, I hope he get's that full 15 year sentence and not a reduced one....
I say just put him in the prisons general population. Then have the guards announce his crimes to the prison populace and that they will be taking a ten minute break. He would not be leaving jail and the country saves a lot of money that would have gone towards his upkeep.
...There are two kinds of people who will never survive if sent to prison - cops, and anyone who in any way harmed a child.
And you are speaking from experience...
<sarcasm>Yes. Because I'm a dead child molesting cop. </sarcasm>
Of course it's not personal experience, it's common knowledge. I am not saying they are all going to die, but anyone who was a cop and goes to prison isn't going to be "top dog", let alone friends with just about anyone in there. And having known people who have indeed been to prison, the majority of inmates often have at least one kid if not more, and they do not like the idea of someone molesting or hurting children in any way. They don't take kindly to that, and they make sure the offender knows it.
He should be kept in a very small cell with no sunlight for the rest of his life. No TV, radio, anything. Just himself to keep company and really bad/bland food. He should also be nutered.
and whatever crime "Keeping 4 people in a dungeon for a very long time" falls under.
That 15 year sentence is far too light. There's the rape, likely the rape of the daughter's daughter (the 19 year old), and whatever crime "Keeping 4 people in a dungeon for a very long time" falls under.
A lawyer for the Austrian man who kept his daughter in a cellar for 24 years has said experts must decide if he can be deemed responsible for his actions.
Josef Fritzl has confessed to fathering seven children with his daughter, Elisabeth, six of whom survived.
His lawyer, Rudolf Mayer, has told the BBC his client will undergo a series of psychiatric and psychological tests.
False imprisonment.
Agreed, the punishment is way too light for that kind of thing. But who knows what laws Austria have, it ain't like here in the States that's for sure (like the civil system versus the common system, for instance).
What a nice way for him to get off. What is it with the "crazy" plea in just about every case nowadays? Anytime someone does something wrong they just drool a little and claim they in no way thought what they did was wrong and thought everyone does stuff like that. Ugh. And Then he'll get a nice little room where they give him meds for the rest of his life instead of the cell he deserves.
