On a psychological basis, the two older children who are well into their late teens, are never going to be able to adjust to something we would consider a "normal" life. Due to their captivity there is so much they wouldn't have learnt - social interaction, spacial awareness etc and it's too late for them to learn it. That developmental window ended a long time ago. There may be hope for the 5 year old who was never allowed out, but they may still have long term behavioural issues. A truly horrendous case.

That's what I thought as well. Those kids will NEVER be able to learn the things they should have learnt at age 2 or 3. They may never even speak properly. Who knows how their mother's speech had changed after 24 years of hearing very few people speaking (other than her own young children).

I don't mind a gruesome punishment for this man......preferrably a slow one.

He should be kept in a very small cell with no sunlight for the rest of his life. No TV, radio, anything. Just himself to keep company and really bad/bland food. He should also be nutered.

"Officials had said Fritzl faces up to 15 years in prison if charged, tried and convicted on rape charges, the most grave of his alleged offenses under Austrian law."

I'm not familiar with Austrian Law. However, I hope he is charged and convicted...and gets that full 15 year sentence....not a reduced one.

Which is so ridiculous. Rape is a horrible thing, but in this instance I think being locked away from the world for 24 years is a little bit worse. I think the minimum sentence should be 24 years. He won't live that long, but that's never stopped the judicial system from handing down multiple life sentences when so inclined.

He could also be charged for slavery, which would put him into prison for up to 20 years.

I say just put him in the prisons general population. Then have the guards announce his crimes to the prison populace and that they will be taking a ten minute break. He would not be leaving jail and the country saves a lot of money that would have gone towards his upkeep.

Agreed. There are two kinds of people who will never survive if sent to prison - cops, and anyone who in any way harmed a child.

And you are speaking from experience...

<sarcasm>Yes. Because I'm a dead child molesting cop. </sarcasm>

Of course it's not personal experience, it's common knowledge. I am not saying they are all going to die, but anyone who was a cop and goes to prison isn't going to be "top dog", let alone friends with just about anyone in there. And having known people who have indeed been to prison, the majority of inmates often have at least one kid if not more, and they do not like the idea of someone molesting or hurting children in any way. They don't take kindly to that, and they make sure the offender knows it.

No need to get sarcastic, mate. Obivously if you were speaking from experience, based on your bold claim, you are neither a policeman nor a child molestor. But since you aren't speaking from experience, I just find your assumption to be baseless.
Lighten up though! Cheers.

The only thing that I can't really understand with this story is why it went on so long without anyone knowing.I could understand if it went on for 24 months but 24 years I think there would have had to have been another involved (the wife?).

Still I think this is disgraceful and no punishment would ever be enough for this man.....

I don't think the wife knew about this. Why would she agree to her husband having 7 children with their daughter, and then have HER raise her husband and daughter's children?

With only a volleyball to keep him company.

That 15 year sentence is far too light. There's the rape, likely the rape of the daughter's daughter (the 19 year old), and whatever crime "Keeping 4 people in a dungeon for a very long time" falls under.

False imprisonment.

Agreed, the punishment is way too light for that kind of thing. But who knows what laws Austria have, it ain't like here in the States that's for sure (like the civil system versus the common system, for instance).

I don't know how you all feel about cruel and unusual punishments, but I think making him work on 3rd party driver compatibility on a vista machine would be a nice way to make him serve his sentence out in his cell.

This case is one of the most disturbing things I've ever heard of. The more you think about it, the more horrifying it is. It's kind of haunted me and I hate it. I just cannot imagine. :(

I really wish there were an amendment to laws where if someone commits a crime THIS horrible and guilt is 100% proven that they forfeit their normal human rights. Like a different classification for punishment.

At the very least I hope that they let him live out the rest of his disgusting evil life in solitary confinement. A concrete cell with no windows and a mere sliver of light. They may have to, because if anyone got word of what he'd done, he'd be torn apart. (which I wouldn't mind so much but it almost seems too easy and why should the other prisoners have to pay for disposing of this trash)

There really is no punishment fit for him. What a f***ing monster.

that's why it is considered to charge him for slavery which as somebody already said is 20 years

not that it would make a difference anyway since the suspect is 73 years old

and for those with the idea of "let the other prisoner deal with him idea": we are talking about an austrian prison not an american or russian prison .. the amount of violence is rather limited here

Cellar father faces medical tests [BBC].
A lawyer for the Austrian man who kept his daughter in a cellar for 24 years has said experts must decide if he can be deemed responsible for his actions.

Josef Fritzl has confessed to fathering seven children with his daughter, Elisabeth, six of whom survived.

His lawyer, Rudolf Mayer, has told the BBC his client will undergo a series of psychiatric and psychological tests.

What a nice way for him to get off. What is it with the "crazy" plea in just about every case nowadays? Anytime someone does something wrong they just drool a little and claim they in no way thought what they did was wrong and thought everyone does stuff like that. Ugh. And Then he'll get a nice little room where they give him meds for the rest of his life instead of the cell he deserves.

The real problem here is that one can only be charged for the law they broke, which has the most severe consequences. Which means that this man will only be charged with ONE punishment, no matter how many laws he broke.

this is why i hate cops first. then lawyers.

but again, how could the wife not notice ANYTHING? 24 fooking years. that is almost as unbelievable as the crime itself.
