Confirming what GeorgieAcevedo said.

CosmoPilot you need to chill out. Whether yours is malfunctioning or not I'm pretty sure GeorgieAcevedo was just trying to help you out.

I appreciate your detailed explanation. I've tried to no avail.

In terms of GeorgiaAcevedo, I'm assuming the same thing. However:
ME: "Auto Bright not working"
HIM: "Yes it is"

He needs to chill out and stop assuming because his works the other 10 million iP5s work too.

At least you had the common courtesy to try and give a solution without assuming anything. However, still no dice!

After a "reset all content and settings," the behavior you mentioned works! I must have something corrupt on my iCloud backup.

I guess this gives me reason to do a clean install.

Sarcasm in your post aside, if apple's stuff wasn't so expensive compared to the average mass market retailer I could swallow that pill.
There's no sarcasm. In addition I don't disagree with your point on price.

Yet the facts I stated are true. I used to enjoy looking forward to Apples exemplary quality & functionality. However as a result of the masterful efforts of Steve Jobs, his unique ability to create huge groups of cult like followers that will largely accept anything with baited breath, Apple operates in a near consequence free bubble.

Ad in the superb job done courting the press & developing shills like David Pogue & others, they been the benefactor of lots of positive press. This phenomenon has existed for years. The advantage to Apple has been immense.

Back in the day their products came very close to meeting the expectations set by Jobs. Yet as his marketing skills improved he began to make sky high claims with total abandon or sense of responsibility.

Being the ultimate salesman, the public bought it, they spent as much money as Apple commanded, and the juggernaut was born.

Now refined unlike any hype / marketing machine ever. It's only natural for Apple to test it's buyers again, just to see what they can get away with.

There is nothing highly complex about anodizing parts. Nor should we be seeing the signs of it rubbing off, so soon after it's application. The explanation reeks of common sense. Apple simply decided to use the thinnest application possible. That, instead of spending a few dollars more to apply a suitably durable amount.

Will this erase all your apps on the ip5? Should you do a backup first?

I have an iCloud backup and a backup on my MBP.

Doing a clean install will result in data loss outside of data stores in the cloud. Thankfully most of my important data is stored in the cloud, so ill only need to add a few things.

Nobody called anyone stupid.

Is your first name Troll?

yeah, the flashlight thing worked. it is definitely a different algorithm from previous iOS versions.

Confirming what GeorgieAcevedo said.

The algorithm has changed. To fully understand how it works and to effectively set it up at a proper setting that works for you I suggest sitting in a dark area for a minute or two and setting the brightness slider all the way to the left and making sure that Auto Brightness is on. Then rapidly expose it to a bright light like a lamp and watch that it will shoot up to maximum brightness. bring it back to a dark area and it will slowly dim down and will most likely stop somewhere between 25% to 50%. Once it stops, and if the dark area you're in is dark enough it will shoot all the way back down to the leftmost side of the slider.

I never touched the brightness setting on my new iPhone 5 from the factory--auto brightness was on, and I can confirm that walking from a room with windows and ambient lighting from the sun, to a nearly black dark interior room, saw the slider move to the left quickly. Then flipped on the light switch and the slider with very little delay moved to the right (not all the way up actually about 1/3 of the way). So it does work and with very little lag time, on mine. I don't know how the iPhone 4 worked, except to say that I was frequently disappointed because often when coming out of standby, it was too dim and never seemed to brighten up unless I locked it and unlocked it again. So I'm hoping the iPhone 5 and IOS 6 is better.
