So always when I would walk, the watch would automatically start the walking workout, but it would also stop it whenever I would stop at a red light or something.

It still starts the workout automatically, but it doesn't pause and resume it anymore. That's been happening for a month or two now. And it is very annoying, because basically I now have to manually pause it every time I stop, and manually resume it as well – which is quite often, when you walk in a city …

I've researched this and basically there's an "auto-pause" feature in the settings (under "Workout"), and it is activated in my case, but only for running and cycling outdoors. I never run and I never used that workout. Pause and resume still works for cycling outdoors I believe, not doing it too often.

But "walking" is just entirely missing. What's wrong here? Has something disappeared with one of the last updates? I have auto-updates turned on …

Does Apple do this to push us to buy a new Watch? Lol.

Walking has never had auto pause. Here’s a thread from 2017 complaining about it.

And Apple pretty much says so in their manual, “Pause running and cycling workouts automatically”

I've seen those thread and I'm actually surprised it never had auto pause because in my daily use it certainly did auto pause (and it was in fact "Walking", not "Running", I can tell that 100%).

So maybe the option in the settings was missing, but the feature was definitely there. I think they removed it with one of the updates.

And 2017 is 6 years ago by the way. In that mean time the feature may have been added (and removed again).

Does it collect as much data as the stock Apple workout app, when walking?
I would think that data collection would be the same. ie dist/steps/heart rate/etc

But I do know the information presented is more in depth.
ie the route you walk run gets overlayed with pace information, you can retrace your route with your finger and see the current snapshot of the metrics being captured/calculated

Like others said it was never an option except in other apps such as RunKeeper. Very odd and unnecessary omission. One could of course argue that it’s less critical to get an exact time for walking as opposed to running, but then why does the app bother to measure walking in 100ths of seconds? I mean if walking is sooo beneath precision then measure it in hours and minutes only, or hey why not skip time altogether and just have the display say ”you walked and stuff” when you’re done… 🤷‍♂️

I ended up here because I was hoping auto pause would work for my walking workouts & just discovered it works for cycling & running outdoors only. I have tried the method you suggest above ever since I got the watch. It definitely "is not hard to do". The problem is remembering to do it! This is why an auto pause feature for walking would be appreciated by many of us, I'm sure.
