Ok, I have downloaded the trial version, and all I can say is that this mac release of Autocad is fantastic!!! The interface is superb and I really love it.

Sorry vectorworks users [and yes I am one too] but I am jumping ship 'back' to autocad.

The workflow I see for the future on autocad is :

Alias Sketch
Autocad
Revit.

Revit is the last of the remaining pieces, and if you are a serious commercial designer and architect, Vectorworks does just not perform. I have used it on small works and is fine, but for larger projects it just doesn't have the capabilities.

All my experience with transferring drawings with engineers etc. has been nothing but pain. Sorry mate, I just don't agree with you in terms of inter-operability.

I am very excited for the future of the mac and Autodesk products.

Seriously, I use Windows + Revit + Autocad everyday of my life, and this mac release floors them all in terms of desktop, useable screen space and layout.

Can't wait for Revit for Mac!!!!!!!

Bye vectorworks - it was fun with your etch a sketch capabilities but I think I am a big boy now who needs big boy toys to perform.

This is really great, I am a student in Architecture and I can download it for free. Though, I've a first gen MacBook Pro (yes, an Intel Core Duo, without the '2', yes the first gen Intel Mac ever). The ID of my machine is MacBookPro1,1

Minimum requirement is MacBookPro5,1 – MacBookPro6,1 recommened!!!

I can believe my system isn't supported, but the Mac you have is not allowed to be older than one year! That's frikkin' ridiculous! My 2006 machine will help my graduate in a few years, but without AutoCAD for Mac... crazy...

My guess is that Autodesk assumes that everyone will be doing 3d rendering, and that may be very video card specific. If you can get it to load, it may do 2d drawings just fine.

Although this maybe exciting, the big market place leader is Solidworks and until it arrives on Mac you're going to find that the vast majority of users will remain with Windows with much reluctance. If there was ever a company I'd love to see Apple purchase it would be Solidworks.

Trying to install, but keep getting:

'Failed to install client: A resource on your manchine (TCP port 9421) required by the NetSession interface is either blocked or in use by another application'

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can buy a student copy at a campus store for $140. That's what I did at school.

Are you stuck with watermarks though?

Failure to Install via Akamai

Can anyone help, this is getting really frustrating, I can't find any solutions online.

Thanks

I don't know if it is related to your problem, but I keep getting a server unreachable error on my machine when I try to download it.

Before Paying $3995...Try FREE DraftSight

http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/

Before I'd pay $4000 for AutoCAD for Mac, I'd first check out DraftSight from SolidWorks/Dassault, Autodesk's biggest competitor in the 3D CAD space.

It runs on both PCs and Macs and posses pretty good competition, particularly for AutoCAD Mac. It's free, no strings attached and is highly compatible with the DWG/DXF file format.

I am completly confused by the performance of this. I run autocad 2007 LT in Fusion and parallels on a 2006 Macbook pro as well as on my Mac Pro 2008 with 4890 ATI card. OK, so neither of my macs are supported but 2011 does not run smoothly on the Mac pro. I get a juddery mouse and lots of spinning beachball (e.g. changing between model space and paper space on large drawings). 2007 is massively faster. Is everyone finding the same? Any performance tips? I only need to work in 2D

Come on dassault
Pull your finger out and bring us catia for osx
That would be pretty neat, but I think it's unlikely. :(

I haven't used AutoCAD for years, but as a student it might be nice to download a copy and give it a whirl. Just for kicks. ;)

I worked out my issues, Autocad Mac does not work with a certain style of drawings that my office produce (they contain lots of clipped, Xref'd drawings) It seems to have problems with this (autocad LT (PC) has no issues viewing these). It seems to work ok on other drawing types and I have also got it to load and run on a 2006 Macbook Pro (ATI X1600) and it seems to open simple drawings ok.

You had me worried for a bit.

I downloaded and tried this puppy out, and I've only got one thing to say: it's buggy as hell.

For instance, if you open AutoCAD and start drawing without saving what you're working on the autosave will kick in about 10 minutes after opening AutoCAD and cause the whole program to crash.

For some inexplicable reason I wasn't able to make layers in a file I made (and immediately saved) without closing and reopening the program.

I also had trouble with layers staying current so I couldn't change the type of lines that the line tool draws; if I set the 0 layer to current it'll stick like that until I restart the program. Same thing happens when trying to change layer visibility; either the layers hide but show that they are visible in the layers dialog or refuse to hide/unhide at all.

Again, this program is just buggy as hell, and I wouldn't spend $4k on it right this moment. I found all this in about an hour of runtime drawing a quick piston rod, and it's shocking that the Quality Assurance team at AutoCrap didn't (or couldn't) do the same. Glad I got this for free as a highschool student...

....and its crashed....again!

Welcome to Autocad. Now you know why the have built autosave into every version that I have ever used (since release 13).

Like I said before, I won't consider using this for a production environment until at least release 2. For some reason, autodesk considers all its users as fair games for beta testers.

that under system requirements they say you need a MacPro 4,1 or later.

Are you telling me my MP 3,1 8-core machine with 12GB of RAM and an 8800GT is incapable of running this?

They listed MBPs and other lower spec machines that can run this. What exactly do those machines have over mine?

Here are the specs listed from the website:

No problems on my MacPro 1,1 dual DualCore 2.66

Maybe before going on about Autodesk blah blah blah! have a look at your system, Autodesk have worked REALLY hard on this one AS have ALL the beta testers, I have been using the mac version for a long time and this version is far from being beta.

FYI, I have not had any issues for the last 4 months :p but then again I keep my system working like a clock and only install things I need.

I really annoys me that Autodesk is made out to be a evil and bad company whatever it does! maybe they should drop Mac again just to keep the whiners happy  and maybe all the beta testers not use there OWN FREE time helping to get programs working before being sent out into the wild! and bring programs back to the Mac community. but then again thankfully the whiners are few and far between :p
