but i have yet to see anything auto-update...I have to open the app store and then then it says pending updates with an app or 2 and just sits there until i click update.....why is this not working right?

See my edit above if you haven't already. How often are you checking a day? My does automatic updates at least once a day. But yes, I too have noticed pending updates when I go into the App Store. That's because I'm checking more than it deems necessary, because I'm eager to see new iOS 7 versions of apps :D

New Theory:

Apps that are updating to iOS 7 have to be manually updated. I say this because Shazam, Apple Store, and Flipboard all had to be manually updated, but Twitter, which didn't update for iOS 7 but just added some bug fixes, updated automatically.

No. Not if you are already on iOS 7. Just because it is automatic now doesn't mean it happens right after the update is posted. There can be a delay of a day or two.

That theory seems right to me because since updating to the GM 24 hours ago only about 2 of my apps updated automatically, the feature seems somewhat broken

Except Shazam had updated while I was on WiFi when I woke up, it hadn't updated, but several of my apps that updated for bug fixes had updated.

I mean it's just a theory. I've just noticed that the only apps I'm having autoupdate issues with are apps that are updating with new iOS 7 designs and APIs.

Sure am hoping there's a way to turn off these automatic app updates.

I have a few apps I refuse to update because they've been made worse, not better, judging from reviews that went from 5 to 1-star, accompanied by howls of complaint.

Yep, it's a setting.
