I don't own any iphones right now. If I get 3GS, it would be my first one. So I'm wondering if it's possible to just buy the phone outright from Rogers, and continue using it on my current, voice only plan with them (which expires in September) and then continue using it with pay as you go (again with them, and with some data plan, whatever seems the best at the time).

im pretty sure you cant buy it out right i tried to with the 3G and they said to go to ebay or craigslist

I thought so too, but here they say:

http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/iphone_faqs

"Device Only pricing will also be available."

Maybe you were asking them if they would sell unlocked phone, and they wouldn't, but I'm just asking to get the Phone locked with them, just not on a years plan, but on pay as you go.

That will be some amazingly deceiving wording if so - but it wouldn't surprise me from them.

I wonder what would be the price to pay if you get a 3GS on contract with them, and then cancel the contract a week later. Would that cancelation fee exceed $500 or so? That way you'd effectively get a phone for $700, and could use it the way I wanted.

The ECF will be 400 plus tax. So for the 32 GB phone is would cost you 699 plus tax, and possible one months plan, or atleast a pro rated amount. Maybe an activation fee as well depending how you order it.

OK, that doesn't sound that bad as a last resource.

I thought they could charge you 36 months x (monthly amount) = ~$2500 for cancellation, which would be pretty catastrophic.

So I could just go there, tell them I'm canceling, pay the price, and then start with Pay as you go with them? Sounds silly and time consuming, but if the cancelation is really 'just' $400, I could do it. I really don't want to tie myself with a three year contract.

If you read the small print it says thats the maximum ECF fee. However, why not just buy it with a contract and just get no data plan? You could do this with the old iPhone so I would assume you can do the same still.

I just spoke with a very stupid Rogers customer service representative. She told me that, as I already knew, I would not be eligible for an upgrade until July 11, 2010. I then asked her if she had any information regarding the price of the iPhone 3GS without a contract. She then asked me what an iPhone 3GS is...

I told her obviously Rogers does a wonderful job of informing their employees about their product catalogs. I said she should go to Rogers main page and take a look. Anyways, I got her to give me the price of an unsubsidized iPhone 3G 16 GB model - $655. If that's how much the new phones cost without a contract I'll just be waiting until next summer to upgrade.

I still hate Rogers, and all their mentally challenged employees.

I hear you. Rogers has some of the most retarded employees on this planet. I wonder what their recruiting process is. One time I tried to upgrade to a special offer phone so I put in the order over the internet. 2 weeks later, I called them up since I still haven't got the phone delivered nor received a confirmation. The CR tells me the person processing the order took the order form but didn't register it on their processing unit. I mean, like if I didn't call them about it and waited, they wouldn't have cared at all. And 2 weeks later the offer ended so they told me I can't get the phone anymore. I just told them to screw the upgrade. Seriously, some of these employees are cognitively challenged.

wow, that is wayyyy too much. Hopefully they come out with something decent. I wouldnt mind paying $400 for the 16GB, even if they ask me to sign a new 3 year term.

OT: so here's a funny rogers story. I called them yesterday to get more info, and used my brothers account since he can upgrade. I asked them about 3Gs and like you said they had no clue. Theni asked them how much would it cost to upgrade to a 8GB iphone 3G, she said $350. I said ok, how about 16GB, i was probably thinking $450, but then she said $320, and told me it would be cheaper to get the 16GB then the 8GB:confused::rolleyes:.....go figure, its rogers

The 16GB 3G has been discontinued. You can actually get one for $99 refurbished through Fido at the moment.

Regarding upgrade eligibility, I called Fido today and was told I'd be unable to upgrade until 6 months prior to the expiration of my contract! Having purchased the iPhone 3G at launch on July 11, 2008, that means I can't upgrade until January 12, 2011! I'm a little shocked, I figured worst case scenario, I'd be able to skip this hardware revision and pick up whatever iPhone Apple has in store for us next summer.

I'm sure a more official policy on this will be announced closer to launch. Anyone want to start a petition? lol

That's total BS. Roger's policy is you're eligible for an upgrade 2 years after you initially signed your contract. I'm sure Fido's is the same, considering they're really the same company.

I think I'll wait until next year anyways to upgrade my phone now, but I think next year I'll just pay the $600+ for the phone with no contract. I'm tired of getting locked into all this nonsense. I'm so sick of Rogers.
