Kind of alarming from a business perspective. Why don't people stick around?

I would guess most people come for help then only come back when they need help. I'm registered at several other forums that are quite large but I only stop by about once a month at most, usually with a question. They are on topics I don't need to be intimately versed in nor do I care to (for instance my car!) but have questions from time to time.

I'd guess 75% or more are newbies who join and then leave after making a single post to:
  • Revive a 4-year old thread, just to say "Gee! Thanks!"
  • Start a new thread to post another unfounded MBP update prediction that should have been posted in the "Waiting for Arrandale" thread
  • Post spam
  • Ask a question about Windows
  • Post some hate message about Apple or Macs

If you check the memberlist and do an advanced search for users who have over 500 posts (the number required to "qualify" for an avatar), it only comes up to 2,813 members – some of which don’t even have avatars uploaded. So if you take all those members and multiply by 30kb, it comes to 10.3mb which is smaller than many full-sized photos

But when you consider how many page views we get, you realize that it currently takes about 10 GB of bandwidth per day just to serve avatars. Not a huge proportion of our overall load, but still...not inconsequential.

Perhaps – and this may already be the case – MR should consider preventing unregistered users from viewing signatures and avatars. It’s something very easy to do with vBulletin (just requires a basic access mask) and I would imagine the site isn’t generating 10gb in avatar views from only registered users at this point?

On that point, does MR prevent unregistered users from viewing photos and attachments? It would seem to me if not that doing so would save a substantial amount of bandwidth which is always a good thing despite whether you all decide to raise limits or not on avatars.

What's the big deal with the avatar limits, anyway? It really is extremely insignificant! This forum isn't an avatar showcase; it's a Mac forum. This is trivial!

Now that we know where you stand, feel free to stay out of the thread if you think it's so insignificant. ;)

I'll feel free to stay in any thread I choose, thank you very much!

Fair enough but realize this is a question I’m asking the admins. We’ve now read – twice- that you don’t agree with increasing the limit and that’s well within your rights and I understand your posistion. On the other hand, now that you've expressed your view twice, to keep jumping in the thread only to say how “insignifgant” this is doesn’t help any party involved.

Just over 2,800 members, or only .78%! If you count only those who have posted in the last year, it's about 2,500, or about 2.2%. That's a tiny percentage of members. Personally, I think the current avatar allowance is fine. I'm glad MR isn't cluttered with outlandish avatars and signatures, that make other forums so difficult to read!

If you want to ask the admins a question and you don't want others to voice their opinions, you should use the Contact Us link or send a private message. Otherwise, threads are open to all opinions, even if they don't agree with yours. There is no forum limit on the number of times someone can express their opinion in a thread. If you don't someone's opinion, you can choose to ignore them.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t voice their opinions, in fact I posted here for just that reason. My point is that you are doing nothing to add to the discussion – going into a thread where you’ve already made it clear you don’t support an idea and have posted “why” and then afterwards reposting essentially the same message over and over again is nothing short of trolling in my opinion.

I have been around for a long time, and have more than enough posts, I only did my avatar about 2 or 3 weeks ago. A little slow :)
