I still love it! Harry Potter and Star Wars have a different vibe and many fantasy type chatacters. This is about 9’ tall alien cats, hard to duplicate and differentiate. We’ll just have to see if the next one makes any money for a verdict. 🙂
The next one is almost guaranteed to make a ton. I’m. It not so sure about the next few.

October 2019 update- Avatar 2 has slipped farther not expected until Dec 2021 Only 12 years after the original. It won’t be called Avatar 2. I looked for an official trailer, but all I found was fan and concept trailers which show nothing from the new movie.

In 2015, Jon Landau confirmed that humans would be returning in the sequel. I think you will definitely have humans in the sequel... There are going to be good humans, there are going to be bad humans, There are going to be good Na'vi, There are going to be bad Na'vi...[11] He also mentioned that there was going to be "action" as well as a "family story". During CineEurope 2017, Landau mentioned that the Sully family would be at the center of all four movies.[12]

Avatar 2 will explore the oceans of Pandora, and the team has been developing underwater motion capture technology for this purpose. He also confirmed that Avatar 2 will explore the Na'viculture more than Avatar. "WETA is working out underwater performance capture for underwater scenes." Landau said, "It's going to be like the Floating Mountains in the first movie. It's not going to be all underwater; it's going to be a place we go to, leave and come back to."[13] James Cameron stated in 2017 that underwater elements will be most dominant in Avatar 2 and 3, but will be ongoing into Avatar 4 and 5

Wasn't this partly the reason James Cameron went to the bottom of the Mariana Trench a number of years ago? He was one of only a handful of people to ever make that dive.

I don’t know if there is a connection. I lived near the Marianas Trench for 3 years (Guam), saw a lot of the ocean above it, but not quite the same. 😉

Starting to look like vaporware.

No way, my understanding too much money has already been spent, and reports are Cameron is hard at work on this project which if I understand it, 3 movies are being made. This is an old article:

Not for nothing, but the story of avatar wasn't that ground breaking. I think time has moved on from Avatar, and while visually stunning, the plot was not gripping and I think that may be some reason why there's little energy regarding a sequel.

Exactly.

At the end of the day, you are telling a story, and, if the movie (or book, or play, or TV series) doesn't work as a story, all the special effects, massive financial resources and CGI in the world won't rescue it, especially if the "story" about the movie in question becomes one of how spectacular the special effects were.

After all this time, I’m taking a “I’ll believe when I see it” approach.

I definitely think it will happen, Disney/Fox is spending a boat load of money. Yet with that said, pushing it back farther cannot be a good sign. Remember, Disney had hoped/planned on releasing the movie and opening up Pandora at the same time in 2017 - clearly that didn't happen

Jul 2021 Avatar 2 Update- Release date Dec 2022.

Plot specifics are currently as elusive as the 'Unobtainium' the human invaders were trying to extract from Pandora in the original Avatar. We do know, however, that the story will pick up around a decade after the first film, and that Jake Sully (whose human consciousness was permanently downloaded into his Na’vi body) and Neytiri now have children: Neteyam, Lo'ak, Tuktirey. It’s also been confirmed that much of the movie will take place around Pandora's oceans, with the newly introduced sea-faring Metkayina clan playing a key role.

Of course, there are also going to be run-ins with those annoying, moon-pillaging humans of the Resources Development Association (RDA). "The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri, and their children," Cameron told Variety. "It's more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans."

While Avatar 2 will be the second act of a five-movie saga, the plan is for it to function as a film in its own right, while still being part of a wider arc. Indeed, Cameron's desire to craft a story that was truly worth telling is one of the main reasons Avatar 2 has taken so long to materialize.

"We're making standalone movies that will stand alone," Landau told Slashfilm. "Rather than rushing into doing the sequels, because Jim doesn't rush it, we have to build our foundation, and that’s the scripts. Knowing that we wanted to tell multiple stories, we didn't just want to solve one script. We wanted to solve the scripts for all of the movies we wanted to make before we ventured out into making them. That's what took us the time

Avatar (2009)- The most incredible thing about this movie is besides the story (although the theme has been seen before but not in this setting) is the creativity on display, science fiction, the scope and epic nature of the conflict, a seemingly complete world created, amazing cinematography, and fidelity to physics, and the way imagined organisms would move. Hard to believe this was filmed in a warehouse.

The sequel no one asked for... The first movie, in my opinion, was just ok, again my opinion, as I know a lot of folks really like the film.

I didn't see it posted... but here is the trailer for part two.

All things considered I thought the first movie was amazing and I'm very much looking forward to the sequel.

I admit when I first watched this, I was disappointed in the story, because it wasn’t what I expected, a holiday at the beach. 😉 After a recent viewing I’ve decided this is a worthy sequel. The climatic fight scene on the water is amazing considering this is basically all CGI.

Spoiler
Avatar2
(2022)- This is not quite as good as the first, because of a plot choice, Turak Makto does not rally Pandora against the invaders at the start who come in force, and though gorilla action loses the fight, runs away for a while, learns the way of water and has a second showdown with you know who. Neyteri becomes a killing machine. Technically this is a cutting edge movie with an amazing blend of graphics, visual blends of live action and photorealistic GCI and a good story. Avatar 3 due in 2025. It’s a gotta see. 🤗 One thing about CGI characters, the story tellers have complete control of their ages.

Watching Avatar 2 again. The underwater scenes are a technical achievement. Plot wise, I wonder if Jake Sully taking his family to hide out means the rebellion has collapsed, and the people would be safe? I actually don’t see that if Pandora is to be mankind’s new home, after trashing the Earth. And there’s 3 movies to go.

Movie 3: Dec 2025
Movie 4:2029
Movie 5: 2031
A hint of movie 6 in 2035…🤔

Note: The Third Chapter name was changed to Fire and Ash. The following video only speculates about the story, with footage from previous movies, but the possible turn here will be Navi fighting Navi with Quarich siding with the other tribe.

Avatar- Fire and Ash (2025)- 3rd entry for the franchise.

This was a good sequel, a direct continuation of the story with an incredible* fight sequence. Col Quaritch continues his obsession with finding Sully, a wild card is introduced, a new clan of Navi, who reject Awa and act as raiders.

If you remember the end of Way of Water, with the help of an outcast Tulkun, the factory ship is trashed/sunk.

IMG_3858.png

This chapter picks up immediately after with continued conflict that culminates in the largest fight of the franchise as the humans decide to slaughter the Tulkun in mass for their amrita, an anti-aging liquid present inside their brains.

* There will probably some pushback to my claim about being incredible, but I’m hooked on this. I admit the fight sequence is similar to the first movie’s but it does not matter to me, and it’s more, the Ash People add a challenge, and no surprise a sympathetic human plays a pivotal role in keeping Jake alive, and I’m going to refrain from details, other than Kiri discovers her ability to ask for divine help. The end is satisfying, yet…

There are 2 more to go, and holy ****, No.4 is not due till 2029! 😐
Will No.4 be worthy? Cameron put out a huge teaser, but no guarantees. 😉

He also told Collider in 2022 that the studio loved the Avatar 4 script. “I can’t tell you the details,” Cameron said, “but all I can say is that when I turned in the script for 2, the studio gave me three pages of notes. And when I turned in the script for 3, they gave me a page of notes, so I was getting better.”

He continued, “When I turned in the script for 4, the creative executive over the films wrote me an email that said, ‘Holy f---.’ And I said, ‘Well, where are the notes?’ And she said, ‘Those are the notes.’ Because it kind of goes nuts in a good way, right?”
