Thanks for the clarification. I updated my post by correctly using the term "AVCHD Lite." I also have revised my test results for FCE4/iMovie 09 for a 2m10s file:

The file size for the AVCHD Lite converted into AIC was 909 MB, and the unconverted MJPEG (since it can be used natively with iMovie 09 and FCE4) file was 480MB. Big difference on your computer's HD space.

Apple doesn't support AVCHD Lite yet.

AVCHD Lite has a minor difference to straight AVCHD in the way the video stream is encoded. AVCHD Lite is always 1280x720p in resolution.

Our software - VoltaicHD - has been out for a month or so now with AVCHD Lite support.

I have been using using the Panasonic DMC-FT1 (DMC-TS1 in the US) this weekend and it is a great little camera. I've posted a quick blog entry here

Good luck with it! These new cameras are fantastic and I recommend them to anyone looking for a new point-and-shoot camera. Video is up to the level of a dedicated AVCHD video camera, but its way ahead of any point-and-shoot that I've ever seen before.

Justin [or anyone]-

I am about to buy the lumix zs3 & just came across this forum. Some of this is a little beyond my comprehension so i have 1 question:

Does flamingoHD resolve the issue of working w/ AVCHD Lite?

thx!

iMovie'09 now supports AVCHD-Lite footage from the Panasonic ZS3. Take a look at Habakuk's post HERE.

thx! it looks like i need to buy iLife in order to upgrade to imovie '09. i have the movie '08 version but it won't let me upgrade unless i purchase iLife.:(

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I was wondering if there's a difference in quality between the Lumix DMC-ZS3 AVCHD Lite video shooting and the Motion JPG video shooting? Someone here mentioned that low-lighting video was better with AVCHD Lite, but is there anything else? Having the Motion JPG option in a .mov container is very convenient, but I'm wondering how much quality I'm sacrificing for it.

More on AVCHD Lite and Macs

I have studied the posts in this forum but would still appreciate some clarification on the matter of AVCHD Lite and Macs. I use Windows, but was asked recently by someone with a Mac to take photographs on a particular occasion and I also took some videos, intending to lend that person my Lumix PhotoFunStudio CD so that he would be able to view them. I didn’t realise at the time that this software is incompatible with Macs. (Yes, had I known, I’d have taken the videos in JPEG Movie format in the first place – but unfortunately I didn’t.)

It looks from the posts on this forum as though the most recent version of iMovie (9) supports AVCHD Lite, but this software costs over £70 and all I’m trying to do is to transfer one short video. I’d noted the reference to Handbrake on this forum and have had a look at that, but which version one downloads depends on whether one has a GUI or a CLI. The computer in question is an iBook G4. It would seem that the 32-bit version of Handbrake should be downloaded rather than the 64-bit, but how to know whether the computer has a GUI or a CLI? My Mac friend isn’t very knowledgeable and so I’m trying to sort it out for him, but I’m not myself familiar with Macs or Mac software and so it’s the blind leading the blind I’m afraid. I’d be very grateful for some help.

Repeat issue: AVCHD Lite imported to double speed iMovie '09 8.0.6

Hello all:

first off--great forum. Been browsing it before, finding very useful info, and I'm sure I'm not the only beneficiary of such anonymous browsing. My thanks to everyone who posts and participates.

I found this particular thread and the reference to the (previously resolved) issue that I'm presently experiencing. Namely, doubling of speed when importing a movie from a Panasonic camera:

- I am importing AVCHD Lite recording from a Panasonic TS1 camera, but through the PHOTOfunStudio v3.0. I first imported all of the AVCHD recordings on PFS on a Windows machine. Next, I exported the recordings to a medium. (I tried DVD, original SDHC card, and a USB Flash drive.) I then gave that medium to iMovie.
- I am importing into iMovie '09 v8.0.6 (which is the latest as of writing this post).
- And most importantly, using the same set up previously, I have been able to successfully import AVCHD Lite and create movies with iMovie '09. In fact, before yesterday, I've never even experienced the "import to double speed" issue. (I had the camera for less than a year now.)

Here are some more details. First, if I'm importing recordings directly directly from the SD HC card (as recorded by the camera), I have no issues with double speed on iMovie. Second, I actually *did* transfer AVCHD Lite recording via DVD from PFS to iMovie '09 once before. It was definitely using an iMovie version prior to 8.0.6 (I upgraded couple of weeks ago to 8.0.6).

So, that same process worked for me before without doubling the speed, using the iMovie '09 (a version prior to 8.0.6) and a DVD as the medium. (I also tried to first Archive the material, and then import it from the archive, but that didn't help either.)

I would appreciate if anyone can help me. I'm at the end of my wits, as it is. Also, being a newbie, I am not sure what the best way is to get the support from Apple--I can see there are options to email, request a call back, etc., but I would appreciate if someone who has had actual experience with Apple support can advise on the best route.

I have just downloaded photos onto my pc MAC from my Lumix TZ10 and realise that it has not downloaded my videos which were taken on AVCHD Lite. On reading various posts I see I need to download a special programme - What do I need and when I downloaded where will my videos appear in iphotos or imovies. Help appreciated as a total novice to all this! And have probably posted in wrong area also - Sorry!!!

Intel Mac, AVCHD lite, Sony hdr-sr11, Canon FZ35

I bought into AVCHD lite to build a set of family memories I could distribute on DVD. The iLife suite seemed built to order, but the final DVD's from iDVD09, via iMovie09 were nearly useless. I use a digital movie camera, the Sony HDR SR11 and my wife has a Canon FZ35. We take stills and movies on both cameras. I don't have a lot of patience and I'm not looking for pro results. I do finally have something that lets me mix stills and AVCHD lite content from both cameras into moderate DVD content.

I import using iMovie09. I edit the iMovie09 imported video with Final Cut Express, though I could use iMovie 09. I create DVD's with Toast 10 Platinum Pro. It seems Apple has given up on iDVD as all my results with that program have been poor. The end result of DVD's creagted with Toast as viewed on a high definition tv could be a lot better, but they're not bad.

I'd really like to hear about any solution giving really good DVD's from AVCHD lite.

If you have the HD/BluRay plug-in for Toast, couldn't you burn BD5 and BD9 for playback on BluRay players? Sure, you'd need a BluRay player to watch the discs, but they're getting so affordable these days.

plug cam in

drag drop entire contents from cam to your int or ext. hdd

open edit software

settings

choose 'apple pro res or go to import settings and choose dimensions etc..

click on import or log transfer window in fcp - choose import clips,

will take sometime as your edit sofware encodes the raw camera files into editable format (pro res)
