I'm cutting HD footage on an "old" version (previous 17" rev), and it's just fine. That being said, I ordered a new 15" because I just like the design, the promise of the feel, the newer graphics, and I just like having new stuff around the house. So yes, the last gen will be just fine for video editing.

Oh, and for those of you who say "The pros will be driven away due to lack of matte display"...we're pros...we'll get used to it. We have fancy schmancy HD broadcast monitors to check our pro stuff on before we go to air or print with it. If Apple decides to go glossy with all their gear, it doesn't mean we're going to suddenly move to Adobe Premiere and Adobe Lightroom...

I agree!! I just can't afford to buy a brand new macbookpro heheheh . SO this is why I am taking advantage of the refurbished proces heheh. I think it wont be much of a difference when it comes down to editing in Fina Cut. Maybe next update I'll gave the money for a new one hehe.

I refuse to work with Adobe premiere anymore hehehhe COngrads on your new MAcbok Pro.

Curious to know what your setup is: What you capture from, what types of drives you working with(esata,fw800) ,external monitors you use, etc

I assume you are working with real HD and not HDV?

I work with both HDV and XDCAM HD. I have a 160GB 7200RPM notebook drive in a Wiebetech ComboGB case. I plug it into my MBP via FW800, and the camera/deck into the FW400 port and FCP sees it just fine. Not sure what the specs are on our external monitors, but they're 1080P NEC high end monitors. I just use XMF files and move them around. For our broadcast standard, XDCAM HD fits the bill nicely.

No, Edu discount not applicable on refurbished

does the edu discount work on refurbished macbooks?

You can of course sign-in to verify this. I have never seen the education discount on refurbished systems.

However, the MacBook Pro refurbished systems are very attractively priced at the moment, hard to beat $1350.

can you use ADC at a local apple store?

lets say: i buy ADC tonight... then i physically go to the apple store tommorow, show proof that i am an ADC member ... could i get a discount?

No, they have a special ordering process.

I'm in the same boat for audio. So what are you going to do w/ one fw port? I'm not sure how cameras & audio interfaces react to being daisy chained through hard drives. Any experience?

ps What the heck is an ADC discount anyone?

Not sure about audio since my audio deck routes from my XDCAM HD deck. I'd imagine a simple splitter or daisy chain would work just fine. That's the beauty of FW over USB...it's can be pushed far more than USB can.

As for an ADC discount. Its a discount you get as a developer that you pay anywhere from $99-god knows how much/year for. I get an employee discount so I just order when new products are announced assuming they're available for discount, if not...these days...screw it, I order anyway....
