Maybe Apple could focus all their machine learning expertise to improve Siri’s speech recognition. Yesterday I was wearing AirPods while riding my bike (off-road). After a double tap on my AirPod...
Me: “Volume up”
Siri (after a short delay): “One option I see is Tire Barn on National Road, do you want me to call that one”?
Me: “No”

2nd try. After a double tap on my AirPod
Me: “Volume up”
Siri: “calling Jim *******, mobile”

I second that. It absolutely doesn’t matter how many times I tell AM i hate rap and hip-hop, sure enough There will be a few tracks of that genre on my new music mix playlist.

You think you hate it, you don’t know you secretly love it, after hearing it 50x from radio. Then you start to thing it is not bad and down the drain you go.

Repeating is a mother of brainwashed wisdom.

With great power comes great responsibility

That is why I use only a really small generator

You guys get that that whole Bieber line is just them selling the quality of their algorithm, right? Since he's probably the most successful social media discovery. It's pretty dumb to assume Apple bought the company to fulfill some marketing slogan of theirs.

No it's not. There's lots of amazing music being released, never before so easily accessible.

Hey, you!!! Get out of here with your logic and common sense. If we don't like something or something going on doesn't fit our emotional narrative then it's bad and should be eradicated.

Also, where is my 17" MBP and Cheese grater aluminum Mac Pro already!!!!

*shakes fist at the heavens*

One of the big reasons why I left AM.

I'm not into hip-hop at all, there's nothing that I did to give AM any hint that I was, yet I got the Drake album promoted to me in 'For You' in the hero position.

Obviously this was part of a promo deal between AM and Drake's label, but it makes 'For You' a joke.

As to this purchase:

  • I guess this means 'For You' may get better.
  • I suspect that it's going to be used to provide leverage with record companies regarding promoting their acts on Beats 1 etc.
  • Also it might come in use if you were thinking of setting up your own label...
[doublepost=1539608503][/doublepost]Also I'd be very interested in Apple buying a company that prevents the wrong versions of tracks from the iTunes Library Cloud replacing the versions that I'd uploaded and want to keep.

And lastly, I'm assuming that with Marzipan, the Apple Music app (and Podcasts) will become the default music app on macOS with the UX nightmare iTunes being relegated to 'legacy' functions - ITMS and curating your own collection (and in the process of slimming down, probably going back to being OK to use).

Maybe then I'll give AM another look in about 12 months.

Looks like it’s worse than this. The article mentions that “The platform pulled data from social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram [..] to find hidden talent”. This likely means that at least part of the algorithm weighs things like demographics, social trends, social media interactions etc. It’s got nothing to do with music (Hence the part about the next “Justin Bieber”).

Sounds like it would be better at finding "influencers" than whatever you want to call Bieber.

Also, I'd be concerned that it ends up being very biased - probably the biggest way being ageist, but also racist and sexist among other things.

It's trying to soundtrack your life; The range would be incomplete if it couldn't provide the 'bad guy' theme, or 'gang battle' backgounds.
if only the places I frequent would warrant such theme. Probably normal life in Apple's neighbourhood.

You may have a point but my head is so close to exploding the moment one of those crappy tracks starts. by the time I have listened to a full song, I am likely dead.

If Apple can use the technology to locate the next Justin Bieber, it would be a real service to humanity. Justin Biebers must be stopped at all costs.

More fake news based on a fake product. I can't believe people accept this type of BS as worthy of being reported on. Engadget runs this type of sensational news all the time.

So this software can identify a pretty boy or girl that once aggressively Autotuned makes them sound like they can carry a tune while giggling their butt in front of a camera?

That's what "success" means in today's music industry, not the quality of their music or vocal talents.

I feel your pain, that is why I avoid any kind of radio. Just sit on a comfy chair with spot of tea, playing Hell To The Liars by London Grammar.

COMPLAINT CORNER
As for rnb, hip hop, rap, why are we forced a non music? Somebody saying YOYO to one loop and talking about his superiority, not for everyone. Nowadays pop “music” is mostly like a really rubbish karaoke with overpaid children with bad behaviour.

But imagine what you could do if you could find him first. :)

SPOTLIGHT, command + delete, secure empty trash

Maybe they bought it just so they can shut it down and spare us all from "the next Bieber"...... One can dream.
I want a platform that's able to find the next Gentle Giant!

Algorithm:
Looks G (weird)? Next
Managed by momma? Next
Can’t sing? Next
Can’t dance? Next
Can’t play any musical instrument? Next
Songs formed with less than 4 words? Found!

I dont understand why Apple didn't acquire Pandora. Its algorithms and ability to point you to new music is so eerily correct. I may subscribe to streaming services like Spotify but those are mostly music I know about. I still keep a subscription to Pandora to get new recommendations that none of the other streaming services seem to do as well even and especially Apple Music.

You're assuming most people over 30 didn't loathe Queen when they were a thing.

The difference is that Queen, or rather their frontman, were an iconoclastic talent for the ages.

JB is a manufactured twit you could render on Rhino and emulate on a voice distortion app.

Even if they did, they wouldn't use Pandora's software to improve their own software.
