Caffeine is my drug of choice. After a hard day of work in the field, me the crew will go out to eat at some steak house.. they all order beers and I look like a wimp ordering diet coke... but I will end up drinking 6 of them in a sitting.

I've given it up before, for a couple months without any real problem... that said, last time I tried to give up on eating meat it wasn't pretty at all.

Something about a non-meat diet, makes me VERY angry.

Hmmm. I've started on a very low-meat diet (i.e., some poultry). This does not bode well for me.... DAMN IT! ;)

I regularly take a month break from Coffee just to clean out the system. I also do this the alcohol (alcohol is much harder to do) and I haven't yet done them both at the same time :D

But it is great having your first cup after a long dry spell.....right now I'm drinking half caf....

Odd. I find that a big cup of coffee does a good job of that for me...

different systems ;)

and mine unfortunately comes with a headache sometimes - I think yours is just a little messier :p

Everyone has their vices...one of mine is coffee. I don't think I'll ever be able to quit it cold turkey (unless something goes haywire in my ticker). For me it's the whole experience. The smell of the coffee brewing, the sound of it pouring into the cup, the warmth your hands feel when you wrap them around your mug, the feeling of the steam hitting your face as you take that first sip. Wow...I really love coffee! Hey, I've cut down. When I worked 3rd shift I would drink 1+ pots a night, plus a 2-liter of pepsi. Going back to 1st shift made it easy to cut down to a slim 4-6 cups a day. That and the heart palpitations :D And I gotta agree with the anti-flavored coffee mindset. Ick! One of my biggest pet peeves is flavored coffee. I'm so serious about that that I brought a new coffee pot to work and posted a laminated sign on it that says "Anyone who brews flavored coffee in this pot shall suffer my wrath immensely!" That is not to be taken lightly, my wrath is extreme! ;) Seriously...ick!!

I also enjoy the smell of fresh brewing coffee. Have always wondered why coffee doesn't taste as good as it smells. Still enjoy the taste. Just not the same as that awesome smell. I've never cared for flavored coffee either. Just ruins it for me. Can't beat the natural taste of nice black coffee, especially Starbucks.

Well I must admit I do enjoy a nice cup of tea... :p

I can go weeks without any caffeine though, and when I do start having it again I don't seem to experience any changes. I guess it affects some people more than others?

Speaking of tea, I've heard that it contains more caffeine than coffee. Is this true? I have one cup of tea and I get sick to my stomach. Yet I can down a gallon of coffee with ease. Hmmm...

Nope, coffee's got tea beat by at least 30 mgs:

I used to drink a lot of diet coke/pepsi, but gave it up almost entirely recently, and now just one can makes me pretty darn jittery. Can't sleep at all if I drink it before bed.

I've never been a huge coffee fan... it always sounds great, and I love the aroma of fresh grounds or brewing coffee, but it gives me awful heartburn and I absolutely cannot drink it black (I'm one of those losers who drinks the flavored crap!).

I work nights in the US,

I have a french press that gets used at work nightly (I can't stand works coffee). On thursdays after work, I hang out at a local coffee shop (Dunn Brothers based in Minnesota) and surf the web and do site updates for my website.

I go without Caffine in the summer for biking and Motocross, but It is hard to give up for those months!

I just quit, almost at 7 weeks without any caffeine. I found it made me irritable and wore me out before the day was over. In the end, exercising provides much more energy than caffeine does. And you don't get the burnout that comes with drinking too much coffee.

I really miss a good cup of coffee though. The taste, and the smell. Maybe I'll try decaf.

i'm a diet red bull junkie! it tastes like crap (although not so much as regular red bull) but it sure packs a punch! come to think of it i like pretty much all energy drinks--rockstar, amp, monster, etc.

I know I can't have caffeine after about 6 pm or else I can't sleep. Water with lemon though has become my drink of choice.

Saturday tradition though is to get a venti skim latte at Starbucks... I could easily down one of these a day, but my wallet would be flatter than it is now!

I love coffee, but you reminded me of one of my favs - Low Carb Monster!
I don't know what it is, but i love the taste, and the kick is good too... Think I'll have to run to the gas station down the road and pick one up!

I'm a weird coffee drinker, I can't drink it too hot. I have to wait for it to reach a temperature just a little hotter than 'warm', then I guzzle the whole mug in a couple gulps. It hurts too much to drink it hot!

Me too! I'm such a wuss. I always put a bit of cold water in, or I have to wait half an hour to drink it. I suppose people who drink it white put a bit of cold milk in, so it isn't that different.

Speaking of which, I was at Heathrow Airport at the start of the summer. Picture the scene. It's 4 a.m. Me and my friends have been up all night. We need coffee, as it was getting to that 'starting to collapse' time. I order a black Americano from Costa, I think it was, and say, "Oh, please can you put a bit of cold water in it". The barista says, "No, sorry, this counter only has hot water". I wasn't about to buy a £2 bottle of water to just put a little shot in, so I just left it. :(

Isn't that strange? What if someone was choking/fainting nearby? Would they give them a cup of boiling water? (Well, they could open a bottle I presume, but you get what I mean.) Is it just so people can't ask them for a glass of water so as to avoid paying? Isn't that illegal? Hmm.

Working in a restaurant got me onto coffee. It's really bad because if I don't have a one before 9:00AM, I get a headache.

In the past three years, the longest I've gone without coffee is two weeks. That sounds pretty pathetic but I haven't really tried to quit. I kinda like the stuff. I don't have a personality that's prone to addiction so I like to think I could stop if I liked. :)

Okay, it's day three of my return to caffeine. I slept much better last night -- I think I'm getting used to the stuff. Yesterday, once again I had just one cup of coffee, and though it didn't perk me up as much as it did on day one, it's definitely better than no caffeine at all. I suspect as I return to coffee, the effects will gradually diminish, and in a year or so I'll wonder why I bother. Maybe I ought to try Mr. Anderson's trick of giving it up temporarily every few months.

Are you kidding? The whole headache thing if you don't get coffee by 9AM? That shows that your body is already used to that amount of caffeine. Your body has a dependency now... consider yourself 'addicted.' Yes you could probably wade through the headache but physiologically you are dependent on caffeine. :(

Bugger. :(

You're right. I'll work on kicking the habit tomorrow. I promise.

Go slow. If you're getting headaches by 9AM, don't stop cold turkey. Just space the coffees out more so you end up drinking fewer caffeinated ones each day.

love the coffee! I try to limit my intake though - a cup every morning for sure, and then usually a cup in early afternoon if I'm at work. or maybe a cup of tea instead.

sometimes, a shot of expresso before going out to the bar is a nice pick-me-up too...but thats only once in a while...
