I did this today with my student discount.
I purchased the Macbook Pro 13" and the SECOND GENERATION iPod Touch.
You PAY UP FRONT for the touch, and get a rebate mailed to you in about a month or so.
You do NOT submit any receipts or UPCs in the mail.. Follow the online procedures and enter your info from your RECEIPT.

Last night I put an ad on craigslist for the iPod and sold it this afternoon for $175 :D:D

Wow, now I'm really curious. I didn't realize that you don't have to demolish your box to get the UPC for the rebate anymore (my poor Early 08 MBP box... :( ). Do you think if you just bring the unopened iPod Touch to an Apple Store without a receipt, they will exchange it for the new one? (I know the answer is no, but has anyone tried it here? The Apple Stores seem to be less "...fond of rules" than the online store.)

If not, I'm just going to get the 32GB for $69. At least it does multitasking, and is only 1 year old. It might be a little easier to sell.

A rebate takes a few weeks. Apple usually refuses to give you the rebate if you do that since you are exchanging a qualifying product with a non qualifying one.

I know. This was back when...when you didn't have to do the rebate thing. I was just saying. This is a first though that Apple has written that it must be a certain gen iPod.

No, you can't.

If you live in CT or RI you can

from the terms...

Residents of Rhode Island and Connecticut who purchase in an Apple Retail Store in their state, or who order online or from 1-800-MY-APPLE with a credit card with a Connecticut or Rhode Island billing address, receive an instant rebate and are not eligible for any additional rebate.

I am planning to purchase my imac and get the free ipod touch.

I've been trying to figure out if proof of purchase means I cut out the UPC code.. or if I can provide a picture.

I read somewhere that there is a way to simply provide a picture. Is this true?

Is there an online method to get your rebate and scanning a upc code?

I'm assuming if I don't open/cut up the box, i'd haev better chances of being able to exchange or return.

But why in the world would they accept a picture... .. just throwing it out there.

Thanks

Why not photocopy the side of the box with the upc code and send it in?

It is stated in the rules in the online apple store at least in my country for the promo that only original and no photocopy is allowed according to text. It is stated that they will just declined your application and you will have to send in the original clippings in a second mail. Just do yourself a favor and send in the original the first time. But make a scanned copy for yourself as apple have also stated that if the mail is lost on the way it's not apple's headache.

Since Apple only accepts the printed barcodes... it's useless that you scan them in case your first mail is lost ;) Either you send Apple's sticker or you're out of luck.
In my case I opted for sending the barcodes from the outer box of my new MacBook Pro (the sticker on the brown box), it has the MBP serial number and the UPC so it should be valid, although I couldn't do that with the iPod :/ since it isn't packed in the same fashion :(

Moreover, just to make sure... I use registered mail; if it is lost, at least I'll get 30 EUR back (from postal service) or so :|

Did it work? I am dealing with the same problem right now and I would prefer leaving the original (white) box intact (for evtl. resale in some years).

I was just wondering, cause they write sth. about part numbers.

Thanks for helping,
