I let my backup go. It had just passed the 'c' in about 2 hours. I walkd away for about 30 minutes and returned, THRILLED to see that it said iPhone sync is complete. OK to disconnect.

Then I saw that it hadn't done anything... it just did a normal sync???

Anyway. Would someone mind just giving a quick step by step of this 'manual restore' method... from what I gather, it's do a sync (in which the phone is backed up normally.... much quicker??)

then click update? without backing up? (click stop??)

then do a restore from the full backup?

Is that how it works?

Pretty much.

Once you do the manual backup (right click on the iPhone in the left pane and choose backup)

Click restore and the popup should ask if you want to do a "Restore and Update"

I just aborted my latest 2 hour attempt... After my first 1 1/2 hour failed attempt.

Thanks a lot!
Wow- that only took about 5 minutes to backup. What gives?

I tend to want to do everything the "approved and recommended" way - especially when it comes to things like software updates... but I figured, nah- only 3 more days with this old 3G before it becomes an iPod touch.

worked perfect thanks
so with the ios 4 software can you make your own photo albums and organize them?

Hey sorry, but what exactly did u do and do u you lose anything? (including texts)?

Is this the correct process?

Do a regular sync/backup?

then right click my iphone and press restore/update? or what?

thanks so much...i cant believe apple releases this kind of crap.

EDIT: NVM.

So the only option was restore when i right click my phone. which i did and took forever. and no os4.0 maybe ill just let it go overnight

First, I let my iPhone 3G back up normally. That didn't take too long.
Then I ran Restore. The actual deleting and restoration process was pretty quick. Maybe 15 minutes? But the restoration of all my apps and data took quite awhile. About an hour, I think. That parallels the Restore process I did a while ago without the update included. All in all, it seemed pretty normal.

No crawling progress bar. No 2-hour wait. iOS4 is successfully installed and running just fine. All my apps and data are there and work correctly.

On a 3G, the update is not in any way earth-shaking, though there are some nice features -- folders, shared inbox in mail, ability to select individual multiple calendars, etc. Glad it's done!

Sorry for asking this when it's probably already been mentioned, but what are the exact processes involved in updating to iOS4 using this method? I tried to update my iPod touch to this software and when it said "Verifying Restore with Apple servers" (OWTTW) there was an error and now there's the 'Connect to iTunes' symbol on my iPod screen. So, I guess I'm going to have to follow this method as I've already backed up manually before I tried the update and have downloaded the software already. Meaning I just have to restore to the new software from my previous backup, right?
