My wife's new iPad arrives today (yay!) and because she's working, I am tasked with transferring most of her data from her dilapidated iPad 4 to its replacement. Will I be able to do a straightforward backup or will iTunes reckon the iPad 4's OS as too old? Just want to know in advance, thanks.

There should be no problem backing up the 4.

I suggest backing up using iTunes on a Mac/PC. Do an encrypted backup so that passwords (as well as Health and Homekit data, if used) get backed-up as well.

Edit - I don't think the iPad does health data.

You could have easily just used her iPhone instead. If you have an iPhone running the current iOS you can just hold the iPhone next to the iPad and use the Settings from there like wifi Passwords and other Apple apps... Most likely the old iPad apps will be out dated and you still would need to update them. After using the iPhone to help you set up, go to the Apps store, log in, and download the Apps she wants to use on the new iPad.
