Sorry if this is stupid or obvious, but no matter where I look, all I find is people talking about what they are doing for christmas, what they think of christmas, what christmas gifts they got, etc etc etc.

People Are aware that christmas doesn't Actually exist outside of human thought, right? It's not real. Humans just agree that the day that we call December 25th, is christmas day. December doesn't even exist, and neither does the number 25. We made it all up. You can have a pile of sticks there, but it's not "25 sticks" until humans invented language and numbers.

With something like numbers, you could argue that we've invented labels for things that do exist. I might agree.

But Christmas? The universe does not know or think that it's christmas. It doesn't exist. Do people realize this?

Best. Post. Ever.

I get to go to my Grandmother's place this Sunday. I was told that she was not preparing any food for myself. (She puts pork in EVERYTHING). So, I will be bring a jar of the chili I made to give to people over these holidays, so that my step dad and I have something to eat.

I have a feeling though that everybody else is going to try and eat it.

errr.

At least going to my dad's will be cool. We just sit around in the living room chatting about this and that for a good number of hours.

Chances are I'll get some worthless junk, and it will just sit in a box somewhere. I don't re-give presents, because I don't really give them at all. Except for my damn fine chili.:D

My favorite part about Christmas? The Egyptian guys that own the pizza place stay open for Christmas, as do the Ethiopians that own the convenience store.

Man it must suck to live in a 100% Christian area.

Well, I'm going back to WI this weekend for the obligatory family gathering, but I'm only there for 3 days, the less time the better. I'm an atheist and I work in international news so I don't get time off and I don't care about xmas anyway, but I am thinking of bringing a bottle of Captain Morgan's to the movie theater after work and watching Avatar and Invictus...what are you guys up to?

Won't be able to go home since the tickets are too high. So, I'm sticking around my apartment while my roommate goes home. Then, visiting some family members who live in the area. I'm a little saddened by it but ehh, I'd rather save my money and visit at a later date when tickets are cheaper. Plus, my hometown is incredibly lame w/the exception of my parents. The $$$ that I didn't spend for plane tickets gets my family members better gifts.

However, I cannot WAIT until the Holiday season is over. I can go back to buying more stuff for myself.

Wow that sounds pathetic, and to be honest this thread is a downer.

I love the Christmas season, its the time we remember the miraculous birth of Christ. Plus my children are so excited for Christmas season, their joy is so infectious, one cannot help but be caught up in it. Finally, life is hard enough throughout the year, why not enjoy this season when everyone tries to put on some cheer and be a little nicer. Getting drunk in a movie theater seems sad and pitiable :(

Then don't read the thread. I don't believe in Christ nor do I care about his birth. That's your deal. My deal is to go on about my life and not succumb to the insanity that is the holiday season. And I try to be nice all throughout the year. I don't wait until December to be giving and charitable like you Christians do apparently...

I'm an atheist as well but I'm damn excited about Christmas this year.

Other people celebrating something they believe/cherish is reason enough for me to celebrate! :D

Actually, I don't wait until December to be charitable, but then I also don't take booze into a movie theater and get drunk watching movie either.

Well you mentioned what people are doing for the holidays and given that Christmas (celebrating the birth of Christ) is the holidays we're talking about, I posted, in that your post sounded a bit pathetic

I will be drowning myself in Johnny Walker and watching Christmas Vacation. That is about the only thing I enjoy about Christmas.

It's just not the same since my ex and I are no longer together, I loved holidays with her and her family. Furthermore, all four grandparents (who I celebrated Christmas with) are now deceased. This will be the first holiday like that. And, I'm still unemployed...after 7+ months since graduating college. Not a very good time, but hopefully Mr. Walker will pep me right up.

Some people have been through some pretty traumatizing events during the holidays and would rather just get through it in one piece. I'm not going to pretend that watching a movie half-drunk is a heroic act, but it certainly beats being afraid for your life or watching someone die.

The question was posed to the Scrooges, not the jolly Christian solstice celebrators...just sayin'.

Thank you. While some of what I said admittedly was a little out there, I'm surprised that most people here didn't seem to understand that in fact there is no such thing as "christmas" outside of human thoughts and stories. It doesn't exist. There is no such thing. It's another rotation of the earth around the sun, that's it.

If you want to completely drop all human construct I suggest you stop using language, computers, indoor plumbing and all other artificial facets of the life you've become comfortable living.

Hey I wanted to suggest that. Everything we have as a society is "made up" barring the reproduction, eating and other basic/survival things.

Are you guys serious? You're equating christmas with language, computers, etc?

Language allows me to communicate with other people. Computers allow me to research information and print out scores of my compositions. Christmas doesn't exist in Any logical or tangible way whatsoever!

It exists as much as language does.
You're digging yourself a hole, bro. Like, I get what you're saying, but you're denying all logic. I really couldn't care less if you don't celebrate Christmas.

Wow. Okay. We are communicating right now. You're understanding what you're reading. This is real, whether you call it language or not.

Show me Christmas. Where is it? What is it? Just show me! Show Me!

Check the calendar it's a Christian holiday (as we know it) that falls on the 25th of December. Some things aren't tangible, but they do indeed exist, as we give these things meaning. Just as everything I said to you has the meaning given to it.

No. The other things you have said relate to realities. Saying "it's december 25th" while not actually true, at least relates to a real positioning of the earth and the sun.

No other life form even on our own planet (let alone the universe) recognizes christmas as something that exists. It is a human thing, and we are just one tiny species.

Nothing else recognizes our language! (as far as we know)

But it's a real thing.

Sir, I understand what you're getting at, but you're completely and utterly wrong.

If I look out the window now I see kids wearing santa hats, or christmas decorations in gardens. It's exists alright. As much as any other human construct.
Computers help you research. Language helps you communicate. Christmas helps bring people together, gives them a holiday to relax in.
