Baldur's Gate 3 Now Available on Mac

Popular new roleplaying game Baldur's Gate 3 is available to play on the Mac starting today. The title can be downloaded through the Steam platform and it is playable on Apple silicon Macs.

The game's minimum requirements include the M1 processor and 8GB RAM, but the recommended requirements suggest an M1 Pro or better Apple silicon chip and at least 16GB RAM. With the M1 chip, the game can be run on low to medium settings, but the recommended requirements support high or ultra settings.

Baldur's Gate 3 was initially released on Windows in August, and it is the third game in the Baldur's Gate series. Players can choose one of six pre-made characters or create a custom character to play. The game is set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, and it uses turn-based combat.

There are 12 classes and 11 races to choose from, along with options to play solo or online with up to four people.

Gather your party and return to the Forgotten Realms in a tale of fellowship and betrayal, sacrifice and survival, and the lure of absolute power. Mysterious abilities are awakening inside you, drawn from a mind flayer parasite planted in your brain. Resist, and turn darkness against itself. Or embrace corruption, and become ultimate evil.

Baldur's Gate 3 has received almost universally positive reviews, and it is available from Steam for $60.

I'm excited for gaming on the Mac. I have a desktop for gaming and the idea I wouldn't need to own 2 machines down the road would be rather...cost-effective.

I play on my PS5 for now. I have read that you can play with a controller on PC though. I'm building another gaming rig next year. I am excited to get back to PC gaming.

I agree that 16GB should be the minimum today and for better future-proofing. Unfortunately, some people continually tell us that the average person doesn't need more than 8GB and that 8GB is "more computer than most people need!" 🤣

We saw it just this morning:

8GB is fine for most normal computing workloads. The 16GB isn’t a standard configuration for the M2 Air unfortunately so they won’t generally appear in offers from retailers.

Have you used one? The 8Gb base is more computer than most people need! It holds up against my 16GB M1Pro for literally everything I do except for running VMs. Most Air purchasers will never run a VM.

Or maybe it's that most MacBook Air users have no interest in playing games? 🤷‍♂️

16gb is needed for Windows. 8GB is fine for MacOS if you stick to email, web, photos, MS Office and all the other stuff most people use an Air for. Remember that like iMacs, most Air customers just need a computer to get life stuff done. 8GB is fine for them.

I won't think Apple will ever be truly serious about gaming on the Mac (feels like a contradictio in terminis....)
Apple love gaming on iOS as it delivers easy money.
The Mac? Nah... never has been, never will. And I am saying this as someone who refuses to buy a gaming PC, as I love to "play" whatever I can on my Mac Studio....

Umm... the system requirements previously said i7, yet now they're saying M1? I have an i9, so am I suddenly blocked from the game now that it's out of early access?

I don’t think every Mac needs to be spec’d out for gaming, but when you consider that 8gb is LESS than 2 DVDs from 1998… maybe we need to up our expectations of RAM.

Last winter I got pool of radiance over gog. I think it’s the first AD&D RPG. Back then it ran with 64kb Ram.
Runs well on my mis 2012 MBP 🤗

You will also want to get the 512GB SSD for better gaming. They went cheap on the 256GB if you remember. A 1TB M2 Pro with 32GB should do well I would think. Can you skip the "theatrical scenes"? I'm not into dungeons and dragons, but I like some RPGs.

You can skip most scenes, yes.

I'm not sure how to get an fps counter displayed on Mac (the Steam overlay isn't working for me), but quick first impression is that performance with an M1 Pro is smooth on ultra settings at half res, or at native res with FSR upscaling. Really nice.
