Lol. Skillets. But seriously, I doubt this happens. Even if 50% of the country owns an Apple product, far more than that own any kind of computer. Don't count windows out.

It's not going to be an overnight thing, for sure. But the erosion is occurring, absolutely.

I mean, as a maker of software, I would want my product to run on as many platforms as possible to maximize my revenue opportunities. I would always look toward open solutions rather than proprietary ones, and now with the mobile/tablet market set to outpace the PC market, there are far more customers there... Windows isn't a player in this new market.

I think the tide is definitely turning. Not that people will stop creating apps for Windows any time soon, but they will build them in a way that assures deployment on iOS (Mac OS X) as well. No more proprietary stuff.

It seems everyone have forgot about Onlive promise to deliver their online gaming to iPad as they did for Android. They have said that app is coming out and then suddenly all gone. I guess that was apple not happy with gaming competition...again.

Back in the day BG1 ran fine in Classic and BG2 came with one of those 'Built For OSX' stickers on it ( I think we were still on 10.1 then). I should know - I ruined a relationship playing these games on my Flower Power iMac!

I can't wait for this upgraded release. My wife is less keen...

I have both the original Baldur's Gate I and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn for Mac. BG I is OS 9 only. I never finished either (goodness, they are monstrously huge!) and played BG I mostly on my PowerBook G3 "Wallstreet" edition. I didn't get the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion, though.

BG II could run under OS 9 or X and I believe will run under Snow Leopard. I didn't finish it, either. In fact, I have BG II on my MBP right now, even though it won't run under Lion (though I could probably play it on my SL VM).

Best RPGs for computer I ever played. Just great story line, story telling, characters, combination of indoor and outdoor play, mazes, dungeons, buildings, secret doors, traps, granularity of character control and equipment, quirkiness of party interactions. Just great stuff.
I always wanted Neverwinter Nights to be a 3D, awesome modern interface update to the Baldur's Gate set but the characters and difficulty to control party members always left a bit lacking.

So fun to see Baldur's Gate being revived!

How about a reasonably priced CURRENT video card to go with that game for your Mac?

Oh, I almost forgot... the only way to mod a Mac with video cards is to spend 3k for the Mac Pro and still get shafted with dated graphics cards.

Nevermind.

I love my iPod and I can't wait for the next gen of Macbooks to come out so I can finally get one.. but I find it absolutely hilarious that a decade+ old game coming to the Mac is such big news.

Hope this is better than the remake of Pools of Radiance. I bought that when it came out a few years ago - huge disappointment.

wow. make that 11 years ago.

Is this game multi-player?

If it is, I want to start the MacRumors Guild!

Yes, it has multiplayer.

would be nice if they also had BG2 and ToB expansion with the tactics mods as well.

perhaps this will come if BG1+TotSC does well...

It's coming shortly after. They also want to make a BG3 if they do well.

So this won't be for iphone just ipad...?

iPad and PC/Mac. If they can make an interface that works they'll do iPhone too.

While I agree with your sentiments, this is not the topic for it--this game is from 1998. It can run on anything.

As already stated, it's been on the Mac before. This is one of the best RPGs ever getting an HD remake with new quests, by some of the original team. It's big news on the PC side as well.
Indeed. I don't get why this won't just be released via Steam. Available for Windows and Mac OS X. I see no problem. The Mac App Store is for applications. Steam is for games.

The parent company owns a Steam competitor which is why we probably won't see it there. I agree it's unfortunate.

I'm pretty sure once D3 is released May 15th no one will give a **** about this game. Maybe get it for my iPad for when I go poo.
This is a completely different game from D3. I for one will be getting both.

Yes, it has multiplayer.

Yes, which is why it's on engadget and joystiq and destructoid and whatnot.

Microsoft specific sites... probably not so much.

Yes - I remember being really excited about Neverwinter Nights as well. Do you remember the load screens on BG2 that stated you'd be able to import your BG character and continue playing in NWN? Never happened, of course. And I never got on with NWN - the single player campaign didn't grip me and I gave up a few hours in. However, I've recently got NWN2 on sale from the Mac App Store and, despite reports of bugginess which I've yet to encounter, have found the single player campaign much closer to the original ethos of the BG games. Just wish I had more time to play these immersive games nowadays - I'm lucky to grab a few moments on Angry Birds while the missus is in the loo (TMI, I know).

I was the singular customer service guy at Interplay when Baldurs Gate was released. That's right. They had ONE person as C.S. rep for the entire company (not including tech-support obviously. I moved into one of those spots later). If anyone remembers, the game was initially released on 5 CD's (or was it 6?) before it was released on DVD as DVD wasn't the norm yet. Well, there was an error in laying the artwork down on one of the discs. They placed it off-center causing it to wobble when it spun, making a horribly loud noise and in some cases shattering the disc or breaking the drive. About 20% of the people had this issue. Needless to say, it made my life a nightmare.

The way I have been playing is in Crossover with the Windows version. I have BGI + ToSC installed using BGTutu so it plays in the BG2 graphics engine. I also have BGII installed via crossover, including mods.

Cool.

I had purchased the old Baldur's Gate II for pc for like $2 last year. I was going to get a cheap pc laptop during the holiday sales but never managed to do so. Now I decided to wait and see what new features MBP's will have in this year's refresh.

I really want this to become a normal thing. There are so many classic games that could and should be reborn on the iPad!

That seems to be exactly what Overhaul games was created to do and I cannot wait to see what their next project is!

But then poses the more interesting and perhaps surprising question for some: "Should we bother porting this to Windows now?" My belief is the answer will be "no" more frequently as time goes on.

I love where this is headed.

While the Mac might (finally) start getting some TLC from the game making community, I doubt it'll eventually lead to the demise of PC gaming. Baldur's Gate is, after all, well over a decade old by this point. Even with the newer features, it isn't a difficult game to port. Seeing it on the Mac isn't a huge, huge surprise.

Now when you start seeing games like The Witcher 2 show up as Mac exclusives and sells a boatload, that's when the PC scene will need to start worrying. Until then, I doubt this is a sign that Windows will become less important as a gaming platform.

But hey. I don't care. I'll finally be able to beat BGII, and I'll do it on my shiny new iPad. :D
