Foldable iPhone? This doesn't sound like the Apple I know. Of all the manufacturers, Apple would be the last company, if that, who I'd think of developing a foldable phone. Is there even a market for this?
A lot of Debbie Downers here on MR......where is your vision? Why the cynicism? More choices for us, the consumer. It could be neat, or it could be not. Who knows? People complain about Apple not being "innovative" and when something like this comes out, everyone scoffs at it like is a pie in the sky....
Apple WatchPretty annoying to have to view a notification. I always feel sorry for my friends who have those phone cases with the cover on them, hearing a ping, pulling out the phone, flipping open the cover, seeing its not important, flipping it shut, back in the pocket...
Foldable phone would be the same thing.
I'd rather see something that folds down the long edge, which can be used like a normal iPhone today while folded and can be unfolded to add twice the screen real estate. Folding on the short edge doesn't really seem to have any advantages other than maybe protecting the screen from things in your pocket...
samsung has already announced one for quite some time, and they had a foldable phone prototype in 2011.Oh but the responses would be sooooo different if it were Samsung, HTC, etc that announced a foldable phone !
In other words, it's the reboot of the flip-phone.
And it will be interesting to watch techie boyz square that circle.
Or people with engineering experience who see how ridiculous this is:
- Making a folded device feel rigid/solid when it's unfolded.
- Making a screen that can be folded thousands of times and not have a visible crease/line at the fold.
- Making a screen that has the exact same response to touch over the entire screen (no change where it folds).
- Making a foldable device that can somehow keep out dust/moisture at the hinge.
- Making a flexible screen that has the same characteristics as a laminated display.
The one I see the most problem with is #2. I just don't believe such a device can be made where you won't be able to see where it folds. And I don't think consumers are going to pay flagship prices for a device with an obvious "crease" right smack in the middle of your display and all your content you want to view.
