Wait what? I've been using my Barclays MasterCard with a Apple Pay for a while..or is this the Twilight Zone?

I also received an email from Ashok Vaswani in answer to my own query on the matter, but on 24th January which stated exactly the same "60 - 75 days". Since this is a gap of 12 days, I would have expected my email to say, '60 - 63 days'

How did you set it up if it doesn't work?

It does work. I used it before on my MC on my Apple Watch.

Why would Barlcays have this link up if it doesn't work:

https://www.barclaycardus.com/servicing/applePay

Even at the top it says:

"
Apple Pay is available with all Barclaycard US-branded and most partner-branded MasterCard®and Visa® Cards. Enjoy a new innovative, secure way to make purchases."

It the same with the Coop bank.

The Co-Operative Bank are considering the idea (or seem to):

We are making significant investment to improve our mobile and online banking services and as part of this, we are actively considering a range of electronic payment solutions that are available in market. We are not in a position to announce these plans at this moment in time, but we will let our customers know once new services are available.

If you're a resident of the US then it's probable you've been using your Barclays MasterCard in conjunction with Apple Pay; if you attempt to add a card in the Wallet app here in the UK you get the obligatory "Your Card Issuer..." message.

Notify Barclays that you're going abroad. Use card abroad. Card blocked. Call Barclays at large expense. Use card abroad. Card blocked. Call Barclays at large expense. Rinse et repeat.

Yours,

A former Barclays card holder

You sound like a typical complainant from any bank. Banks will always reimburse you the cost of calls if requested.

I live in Spain and I was misinformed by Barclays with regards to making some account details. I made specific preparations to come to the UK to visit a branch and it transpired the trip wasn't necessary. Barclays reimbursed both my hotel and flights.

In addition, I travel often between many countries and my card has only ever been blocked when I've not informed them of a specific pattern.

I think it's all about how you deal with a situation plus avoiding the horrific Indian call centre. Just insist on talking to somebody in Coventry. They won't object as they'd probably get sacked if a complaint is made directly against them.

Because we're talking about Barclays UK, not US.

Yeah I realized that after the fact. The article

Yeah, I realized that after the fact. And no, I don't think the US is the only country in the world.

Finally, I have been trying to use contactless with Barclays for ages, they refuse to give me a contactless card until mine expires (in 3 years!)

Have you tried "losing" your card? That said, my girlfriend (who's with NatWest) had a debit card that didn't have contactless and she just called them and asked for one. They sent it right away!

Finally, I have been trying to use contactless with Barclays for ages, they refuse to give me a contactless card until mine expires (in 3 years!) and constantly push the pointless bPay key rings and bracelet as a solution. No thanks.

Resorted to opening a Halifax account to take advantages of Apple Pay.
I can’t believe you just didn’t report your card lost.

Pity it took them so long compared to all the other banks. HSBC was a month late with their roll out but at least this is lining up all the top UK banks up with the availability of using Apple Pay.

I'm confused. I've been able to use my Barclays MasterCard with  pay for over a year now. But the novelty wore off pretty quick, so now I only use it if I happen to forget my wallet.
Edit: Oops, nevermind, I'm in US and the article seems to be referring only to Barclays in UK.

But they can't reimburse life spent. Haven't had any issues since I moved on.

Oh Barclays have realised that people don't want stickers on their phones or buy overpriced key fobs, after all this time I have changed banks, and am not going back to the again

Used to be kind of happy with Barclays but there are no reasons to stay with them:
  • Reduced the interest rate on my ISA account
  • Lack of split Help to Buy: ISA (I'm not a student, I can save more than £200 a month, so...)
  • No interests on my current account
  • This Apple Pay support delay was simply ridiculous

In fact, this very next week I'll just move to Nationwide:
  • Mainly for their "split" Help to Buy: ISA with a very good interest rate
  • £100 (!!) if I switch because of a friend's referral
  • Interests on current account
  • And yes, they support Apple Pay for months now
As someone mentioned, unless you have very special needs/accounts switch account is hassle free.
It would just take 7 days and everything will be redirected for you (I guess you just have to change the card details on some website). Therefore just switch to follow the best bank, so they'll be forced to offer a better service if they want their customers to stick with them.

Bye bye Barclays, see you in few years (MAYBE!).

Maybe it's not a big deal to you but Barclays is the biggest bank here in the UK, it has over 40m accounts and the population of the UK is only about 65m.
To put that into perspective, it has more accounts in the UK then the population of Canada.
My point wasn't about the bank; it was about the lack of support for actually using Apple Pay, at least here in the US.

I have plenty of choices of banks to use to fund Apple Pay. But it does me no good because I have only been able to use Apple Pay once.

That's something that in time will change in the US as new card machines are rolled out.

Apple are also rumoured to be releasing peer to peer Apple Pay, I wouldn't bet against this being rolled out in iOS 10 / iOSX.

I've used Apple Pay ever since First Direct supported it last Autumn. Absolutely love it.

I've found more and more retailers want to take your card in their possession and it was starting to irritate me - especially for contactless payments. Apple Pay forces the retailer to pass me the machine, not my card to them.

A few weeks ago I was in a pub and my Apple Pay was rejected. Anyway, long story short, they managed to get hold of my card after more 'rejections' and sent me away to my GF to get her card (stupidly leaving my card on the bar) which the barmaid picked up and tried to do another contactless payment without my authorisation and clearly took my cvv number. My card was cloned and they unsuccessfully (fortunately, as FD spotted it) attempted to pay for some random £1 purchases and then tried to book a holiday on my card.

Basically, if somewhere doesn't support Apple Pay, I'm extremely wary now.

I'm glad Barclays are now adding support. I have a barclaycard, and just this last two weeks had £4,000 worth of fraudulent transactions on it..
I was on holiday, so didn't notice it happening myself. Barclaycard picked up on it. If I was home, I'd have noticed cos I check my account every other day.
I never used my card whilst I was away.

Not sure how they got my details though. I can't remember handing my card to anyone. Never used it in a cash machine. Only really use it physically for fuel but I'm sure I normally put it in the reader myself.
I can only think the details were taken online somewhere. Perhaps the Sony hack from a couple of years back, or the carphone warehouse breach (I've used mobiles.co.uk and ID Mobile, both subsidiaries that were affected). I'll make sure I get new cards next time!

Tried to use Apple Pay for the first time a few days ago. It was so damn fiddly I gave up after a few unsuccessful attempts and used my contactless debit card instead. I won't be bothering with Apple Pay again.
