The problem is that the retailer doesn't need to do anything to accept Apple Pay but does need to do something to support CDCVM needed for limitless transactions. If not many customers pay by Apple Pay there won't be much incentive for the merchant to update their terminals.

Thank you so much for posting this info, I've been wondering about the limit cap removal for ages. I should probably have just googled it seeing as it is a legit Apple KB article....but still! ;)

I've just contacted my merchant account provider to see if I can enable CDCVM on my new terminal.

For this reason if a purchase is over £30 I assume they won't accept contactless but look out for the symbol on the screen.

What does the symbol look like?

Ahh right, cool. Sorry I thought you meant there was a symbol for contactless over the limit. That's the standard symbol though right?

Although it's been sometime since I spent over £30 at Morrison's whenever I've used the self service tills the terminal says Insert/Swipe Card and the contactless symbol disappears.

In terms of Barclays Bank it says "could not add card at this time" now.

Yeah that's my experience in Morrisons. What I was getting at was that if you normally ask to pay by contactless (incase the cashier has to choose a separate option), asking if they accept contactless for a a transaction over £30 could cause confusion. So I just automatically get ready to pay by card and then if the symbol appears on the screen I will switch to Apple Pay.

You're welcome. I wonder if it will be enabled by default on your terminal. Please do report back on whether it is a complex process.

Indeed. No there is no symbol for contactless over the limit.

Looks like the switch has been flicked - I have added my debit card this morning, and the other half his Barclaycard. Not had a chance to try it in anger yet though.

The Barclays website also now has details on Apple Pay.

Yeah, this is why IMO it's better to stick to mainstream banks (the so-called 'big four') rather than mucking around with VBO's (Virtual Banking Operators) like Tesco's or Sainsbury's banking efforts. As, like virtual mobile operators, their services are usually lacking in several areas.

Same with credit cards: stick to big four or big cc operators like MBNA or Barclaycard (not the same company as Barclays Bank anymore, BTW!) wherever possible. Most of the best 'deal' cards (cashback, transfers, etc.) found on comparison websites are 'brands' of the big companies anyway, generally.

I am not sure if you know this, but Tesco bank has been it's own bank with it's own Licence and money stocks since 2008. They are no more a VBO than HSBC is. You can also pay money in and take it out at most Extra stores if you wish.

I can also confirm it's working on a Barclays current account with blue rewards and contactless card on an Iphone SE

By rights it should be contactless. At Morrison's (where I've shopped just) at the self checkout I merely selected card and then held my iPhone near the reader.

At Boots I select contactless payments on their self checkouts (or tell them I using contactless if a cashier serves me).

The same goes for Tesco (Metro); I select contactless payments on the self service.

I will be glad when Tesco allows it on their debit cards. Everytime I use my contactless it always stalls asking if I want to use my clubcard points because they have them both built in together. And it's annoying!
