So does that mean that the front facing camera is constantly on? Seems like an even bigger privacy violation. Might have to stay with IOS 10 then.
I don't believe this is true. Based on the rumors so far, the facial recognition has nothing to do with the front facing camera, it's based off of an infrared scanner and receiver (meaning it would work in low light) and wouldn't actually get a visual representation of you or your surroundings, just a spacial representation

It would probably be activated by the accelerometer when the phone is pointed at your face much like the AW turns on when you look at it. The accelerometer is always on but the camera is not -- besides security that would drain the battery real quick.

The last 3 years the phones were kinda the same.

And yet this is the first year of a BIG transition... but you're NOT gonna upgrade. :p

I get it though. Before you fire back at me... I understand your dealbreaker iris scanner. I'm just having fun.

I just thought it was funny that you had no problems upgrading during the minor-upgrade years... but you're skipping a major upgrade year. Perhaps the biggest upgrade ever.

Just curious about your plans in the future though. You know TouchID probably is gone forever on the premium iPhones, right? Does this mean no more iPhones for you ever again?

And speaking of the future... I wonder what next year's lineup will be? Will Apple keep 7-series around along with this new 8-series?

Perhaps the 7-series will be like the SE is today... the "legacy" model. :)

I'll probably be forced to upgrade when future OS versions bog down on this incredibly powerful A10 processor. But I'm starting to question my own consumer driven decisions. I want to see how long I can be content without an upgrade. I'll also wait and see if any privacy/security scandals are uncovered in the way the new phone works (FaceGate or something like that). Think of the money I'll save.

Apple could reduce the price simply by reducing the amount of profit from each unit!
Whatever it is you do for a living, you should do it for less money.

I imagine the price will be high, and units will not be available for pickup for many months.

I have to wonder about the accuracy or how theyll avoid certain issues, for example, not everyone wears glasses all the time.

I dont want that **** either, Id rather the device cost less.
If you do get air pods for free, you could turn around and sell them and recoup some cost that way.

Understood.

It's too bad you don't have a time machine to send yourself a message in the past... and tell yourself "keep the iPhone 6S for another year" :)

Like I said... this new iPhone 8 is perhaps the biggest upgrade ever.

If you were to pick a year to skip... this is the wrong year! :p

I'm excited... this IS my year to upgrade. I've been on the "S" cycle since the iPhone 4S. Finally I'm getting the "new" phone.

But yeah... I can understand the security concerns. Let's hope Apple doesn't ship something that works worse than its predecessor. I, too, am a fan of TouchID. I'm curious to see how FaceID will do.

And it's not just us consumers... I'm wondering how the banks will handle this. I also use Apple Pay... and I'd be sad if my bank pulled support because FaceID isn't worthy enough.

3 days, 18 hours and 51 minutes until we hear Apple's story!

You know Touch ID has been defeated by Play-Doh right?

For those wondering... I think this is what they are talking about:

http://fortune.com/2016/04/07/guy-unlocked-iphone-play-doh/

It's especially easy when the OWNER of the phone is standing there with their thumb in a dental mold for 5 minutes.

I love experiments like this... and the other methods the Chaos Computer Club demonstrated a few years ago. Adam Savage's "Tested" did this too.

But there's a big problem... they are done in a controlled environment. The owner of the fingerprint is PART of the experiment. And they have unlimited time and unlimited retries.

It gets exponentially more difficult if you just find a random phone on the street... or if you have to steal someone's phone AND try to find to get a good, clean fingerprint.

Plus you're racing against the clock before the owner disables the phone remotely... rendering it a useless paperweight.

So yes... you can spoof TouchID... but it's not easy or practical... and the phone might be wiped out before you can complete the task.

In other news... you can pick a lock with a bobby pin. :p

Actually new reviewers are discovering it cannot be tricked and their was a bug in retail models allowing this. People will do anything to try to ruin Samsung's brand. Anyone who has a Note 8 like myself please try to trick it. It does not work for me and I have used several of my photos. Thanks

https://www.sammobile.com/2017/09/07/no-galaxy-note-8s-face-recognition-cant-fooled-photo/

Last week, a video started making the rounds online claiming that the Galaxy Note 8’s face recognition feature can be fooled by a photograph—and guess what? It can’t. Seriously. We tried it for ourselves and weren’t able to generate the same result.

Here’s why it worked in the clip: When a smartphone is on display in a brick-and-mortar store it’s running something called Retail Mode, which makes it easy to trial all the different features on board a handset without having to configure them.

The main reason retailers use the often-outdated software is to prevent people from maliciously—or accidentally—locking a demo unit to their face, rendering it useless for all other potential customers wanting to play around with it that day.

We replicated all of the steps outlined in the video and even tried using a flat photograph, but to no avail. Each time, our Galaxy Note 8 displayed an alert saying that it was unable to detect a face, instructing us to try again.

While we can’t offer up an explanation as to why some news outlets were able to trick their handset with an image, we can honestly say that we weren’t. We’ve reached out to Samsung for an explanation and will update this post if/when we hear back.

Looks like a classic example of trying to trap users into the Apple ecosystem to me.

They have become Microsoft. Resorting to tricks to support lock in, to further shore up base by keeping it difficult to go to something else. Would be cool to see them make things that are so awesome that they even could make it easy to change to something else, and no one would because would not want to leave. Challengers could offer credit to people switching in order to repurchase music and video investment, then what would they do to keep people? AirBuds Pro? More voices for Siri? $5 off a year of Apple Music?

Now thats just CRAZY TALK!

Yeah that could, but the iPhone 8 is likely priced at a high enough level that not everybody is going to want it, what with rumours of supply constraints and all.

Simply supply and demand economics at work.

But it has fingerprint for the win. :)

How does this rumor make the Note 8 look better...? Apple potentially giving customers something for free (even if you don’t need it) makes another smartphone appealing to you? How dare them!!

Rumor probablynisnt even true, so idk why it bothers you like that.
Nothing is FREE my friend. Best case Apple could lower the price by the equivalent, worst case they're digging their claws in you even deeper. PASS!

The iPhone is gonna be this price period whether they give away subscriptions or not. The Note 8 is basically the same price without any of that and who knows how they will compare. Just don’t see your point

The device is not going to cost less. Plus it’s not promised that anything will be bundled with it. This is just a rumor. If the phone comes with something free to soften the price gauge, I’m taking it.
It could come with socks for all I care.

Apple is not known for giving out bundles with iPhones to make it cheaper... At least they never has been, so this would be a first.

The only thing is : Who *wouldn't* would a price reduction.

Let's hope this becomes a trend..... The price goes, up,,, save by buying a bundle. so hopefully as time goes on, you may find getting an extra pair of Airpords thrown in as well.

For the people who don't use iCloud, how do you backup your devices and how often? We have 2 phones and 2 iPads we backup automatically to the cloud with mostly pictures since we have a little one. 3 per month seems like a bargain.

I don't backup my data to iCloud because none of it needs to be backed up. App purchases, Music, Notes and Photos all live in the cloud anyway.

Well its one way of massaging the Apple Music usage figures I suppose. They are already giving it away free with some carrier plans in the UK.

The device price is confirmed all we saying is we need something else like Apple Music AirPods and lots of storage place if the phone is 1k

Yep. Can't blame Samsung for giving them short shrift really.

So are we just supposed to forget the (forced) free U2 album?
I actually liked some of the songs on that album. But then you could just put that up to my weird taste in music.

But wasn't that album actually free? Sort of marketing for U2? Maybe apple dished out some money to the publishers for their ol' friends. Don't think users actually had to bear the brunt of an increased price for it.
[doublepost=1504964713][/doublepost]
**** that. I don't want Apple Music nor iCloud storage. Note 8 looking better and better.
Why? Because of some random rumor? I really can't believe people get influenced so much by "rumors"!
