Looks great!

I am still waiting for the thread that asks... how to rip book collection to iPad

It's a great app. Has two huge things Kindles app is missing: page numbers and dictionary access. I love how if the word isn't in the dictionary it greasy out the option, whereas iBooks loads a Not Found window.

3. Wrong. the kindle with the same size screen as iPad is almost the same price as the iPad.

Yes but a lot of people are just fine with the smaller, more portable model that's half the price of an iPad.

That said I'm holding off for an eventual Kindle price drop which B&N would be likely to follow with the Nook. :) I had a Palm TX back in 2004 on and purchased a good amount of books on eReader.com, so the Nook is a better choice for me. I'd love if the iPad/iPhone apps could incorporate that library too, then I'd be able to drop the eReader app.

(Still extremely grateful I rarely went with Mobipocket back in the day...)

Its interesting...these e-readers.

I live in NYC where I think devices likes e-readers are found everywhere. I have a few friends who i would consider average consumers but avid readers. One has a kindle, the other has a Nook. They have zero interst in an iPad. They like the iBook app and thought it was cool...but at the end of the day, they have their e-reader with them in their bag to take out and read on epaper which honestly is the 1 advantage of current e-readers.

Yes, i think the price NEEDS to go down but i think many people are fine with just a e-ink e-reader while I think the iPad is a great companion to an ereader.

The one example i like to give is the fact if you are out in central park at lunch with the sun over head, its imopssible to read a book on the iPad comfortably. On an E-reader its when it looks its best.

But good too see B&N and Amazon aren't being slow to be on every thing they can be.

Still no New Yorker

I wish they would get their act together and let me read my New Yorker on the iphone and ipad apps. Not just the Nook.

Let's see

Kindle: 3 years = 3 million sold
iPad : 1 month = 1 million sold

1. Sure, that must be why e-ink is soooo popular. Not.
2. Wrong. iPad users don't need a computer, Apple can set it up.
3. Wrong. the kindle with the same size screen as iPad is almost the same price as the iPad.

Boy you are dense.

1) What part of "cult product" do you not understand? (Clearly you do not understand it b/c you are quoting sales figures which goes against the whole concept of what a cult product is).

2) You do need a computer if you ever want to update your iPad firmware, say like when iPhone 4 arrives. Sure you can probably go to the Apple Store to do that -- if you have an Apple Store nearby -- but you still have to make that trip b/c you cannot d/l it from your iPad -- you need iTunes.

3) You can buy a Kindle for $259. That is correct. Price conscience people are going to look at the cost of entry. I doubt 3 extra inches is going to matter. I certainly had no issues with my previous Sony eReader of the same 6" screen. It's fine for a reader. Anecdotally, I don't see a lot of Kindles in my travels, but I never see a DX, so I have to wonder if Amazon even sells many of that model.

4) Just to summarize -- my original post did not advocate that Kindle was going to even be remotely competitive with the iPad, only that it was not going to die. It has its fans. Sorry if that bothers the core of your soul as it apparently does given your post. Relax. It's just a device. In 50 years we'll be laughing at both the Kindle and the iPad like we laugh about the the ice box and punch cards today.

Um, did you bother to read the original poster? Nah, didn't think so. Your points are kinda irrelevant to someone talking about a cult/niche product.

Intriguing...can you explain how to do this?

The method varies depending on which format the book is in (b&n uses a couple of formats). You can google to find the appropriate recipe (each involves downloading scripts to handle DRM-removal - then you can use calibre, if needed, to convert formats).

The Breaking and Entering Reader???????

I can't believe I am the first one to comment on the name. Is someone going to come out with the Justifiable Homicide Reader, now?

I've been trying to figure that out, I don't think its currently possible.

its possible.. i did it..

i am at work so my ipad is not with me. I will try and give you exact details on what i remember doing and i hope it helps!

you need to click the "get new books" icon in your library... it launches the B&N website on safari... there should be a link in the website called "my library" or something like that.. it will give you a list of all your books.. next to each book, you will see the option to buy, download sample, or delete the books... once you do that, close the B&N app and open it again... all the sample books should be gone... if they are not gone, close app and open it again.. i actually had to launch and close the app twice but now its perfect =)

To each their own, my iPad has completely replaced my Kindle. I will never look back.

Pretty interested in this but I've yet to play with it. It is nice to see BN come to the table.

How do I delete the sample books from my BN library?

You can, I did it online though through their website.

You cant look back...because your eyes are now shot from staring at the iPad, a screen eye doctors the world over are shaking their heads in disgust and fear over. I guess it will keep them in business though.

iPad screens are no worse than the computer and tv screens most people stare at all day.

Except this isn't true. It's quackery. Reading with the iPad at night will not harm your eyes. Reading a back-lit screen will not harm your eyes. The doctors that are quoted in these fear-mongering articles fail to mention the LONG history of people watching television late at night. I watched...and fell asleep watching...Johnny Carson for over 20 years. Now it's Letterman. My eyesight is still 20/20 (I know this because I just had my drivers license renewed). How is the iPad different? Because you're sitting closer to it? Please...

Also, the stories about reading the iPad at night will fool the body into thinking it's day so you don't get a proper nights sleep, is also nonsense. Again, the TV example above...and how is the Kindle immune from this, since you have to have a light on to read that as well.

Automatically syncing to last page read

Does anyone know if the Nook and the Barnes and Noble eReader on the iPad (or other eReader device) will automatically sync to the last page read? I know that the Kindle does do this, but have not found definitive information as to whether the Barnes and Noble products can do this.

Yes.

The nook looks like a superior product to the Kindle. Didn't really pay attention to it until I saw one demoed the other day. Very impressive.

Thanks, hopefully they can make that a bit easier in the next version.

What on earth are you talking about?

BN eReader
BnE Reader
B and E Reader

B and E is short for breaking and entering, as in breaking into a place and going in. Am I the only one who spent his childhood watching too much television and too many movies?

If it was called the "B&E reader" I'd see your point. But you had to seriously mangle the name to get it to match your pun.
