I don't know why app developers think it's okay to make everything a subscription when what they're offering is NOT A SERVICE but a PRODUCT.
Keep that same energy developing an app ongoingly without any means of recouping the additional engineering time and costs.

Seriously, articles don’t need a list detailing every wrong, real or perceived, made by a company. Otherwise we’d have mention of factory suicide nets on every Apple story. It takes little time for someone to research an app before they spend $15 on it.
Actually, let’s hold everyone’s feet to the fire (businesses for their shady practices, and people who don’t want to look at the facts). Maybe the world would be better off if we confronted the problems around us, instead of sticking our heads in the sand and pretending they aren’t there.

I know you were being snide in your dismissing such fine print, but I think it’s a good idea. I’m sure plenty of others do, too.

I’m a long time Bartender user, first as a paid user and now via SetApp. I just found out BetterTouchTool can provide much of the same functionality so am giving it a try. The price of BartenderPro simply isn’t worth it, and I wonder how long the current version will be supported. In addition, it periodically decides to redoi it’s icons and freeze my Mac.

After dicovering what BTT does, it makes me wonder what other functionality that I get via multiple programs can be handled by BTT, Alfred, etc.

It was a nice run.

So after having a macOS build-in weather widget, weather menu bar extras item and weather app Butler now offers a weather widget of its own. Amazing!

I am always having to quit and relaunch Bartender 6 because mousing over links stops working properly. The only way to quit Bartender is to go into Activity Monitor and quit it from there, which is a pain. Bartender's developers need to work on its current bugs; I'm not paying $15 a year to introduce more bugs on my MacBook Air.

Personally, I’ve switched to just completely hiding the notch.

I realize most people just look beyond it, but for whatever reason it drives me crazy and I can’t stop seeing it in my peripheral vision, so I really enjoy just getting back to rectangle all the time.
Just quick question. I have hidden the notch by changing my wallpaper to black. Only way I found, and I have gotten away with it since the original M1. However, I would prefer to not have a black wallpaper and just black out the area horizontally with the notch. Is there some method you’re doing that with? Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Bartender has Sherlocked this entire feature set from Notchnook. Notchnook doesn't do the menubar stuff that Bartender does, but all the new Notch features are literally Notchnook, just on a subscription instead of a 1-time purchase.

Does anyone know of an App that just allows changing the Menu Bar appearance?

I basically would like the dark mode menubar (black) all the time. I don't really need features beyond that.

🙏

I've given up on Bartender as-of the release of MacOS 26 as it broke Bartender version 5 and Bartender version 6, which was supposed to work with MacOS 26, never got to work properly despite countless beta version testing and giving feedback to the developer.

I switched to Barbee and apart from the fact that it does not seem to automatically start upon a cold boot or restart, it works as advertised.

This is an interesting feature set, but with all the rumors of Siri interrogation in the next wave of Apple updates, I would not subscribe to anything until we see macOS 27 next month.

..I wonder how long the current version will be supported..
And these additional features lie dormant, extra resources are squandered. I like to know I'm running as lean as possible.. and already have apps that take care of Notch enhancement (there are many, I use Alcove)

Agreed. I've had to go back and forth with Bartender, and they still haven't fixed all my menubar placement erratic behavior - then they go onto other 'abilities' before fixing things once and for all. It's crazy that the free Thaw project has zero issues with my menubar item placement. After this move, I think I've finally moved on (though I will miss certain things, such as Triggers, Spacing (using the app Spaced to compensate for this one), etc)
I'm also using Thaw and like it. The menu bar appearance settings don't always work, but it's still better than Bartender.
The latest beta 12 of Thaw 2.0 has been fantastic! Which appearance settings are you referring to?
cant wait this becomes native feature in macos 27. i wont use these kind of third party apps. bye.
Are you hoping here, or have you read a 'leak' of this upcoming functionality?

same. went back to non-notched resolution and adjusted the icon spacing to fit more icons

None of the settings under "Menu Bar Appearance" are working. They have in the past, so one of the macOS updates probably broke them. I'm on version 1.2.0 though, not on the beta.
