And I repeat, this difference in speeds really doesn't matter for the average user. It only matters if you depend on the speed for work and can get more done quicker to make more money. And if that's the case, you probably need more than 256GB anyway so problem resolved. You also probably need more than an Air but that's besides the point.

Because it’s slower than the predecessor.

lol
Are you being serious?

Well .. usually you don't expect the newer model...the "upgrade" to in fact be slower and be a "downgrade" in something as key as the SSD speed.

Most any consumer would find that to be "bad"
Not necessarily. A device is sold as a package. One component can be worse than its predecessor but the overall package is usually better overall with the improvements in other areas.

Exactly. Lots of noise from people who won't even be buying this model in the first place.

If only Apple clarified the 1.4x thing with a footnote of some kind.

Oh wait, they do:

Testing conducted by Apple in May 2022 using preproduction MacBook Air systems with Apple M2, 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU and 24GB of RAM, as well as production MacBook Air systems with Apple M1, 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU and 16GB of RAM, all configured with 2TB SSD, as well as production 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5-based MacBook Air systems with Intel UHD Graphics 617, 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD. Final Cut Pro 10.6.2 tested using a complex 2-minute project with 4K ProRes 422 media. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of MacBook Air
Explain what equation you’re using to get the numbers on the 256GB config by looking at these numbers.

You’re honestly suggesting consumers will go to M2 Air product page and read this foot note and deduct “1.4x faster on 16GB RAM + 2TB config? Oh, okay. Then the 8GB RAM 256GB SSD config must therefore have a 0.5x as fast SSD as the same 256GB M1 config had. That’s basic math!”

Lol.

The mind gymnastics I’m witnessing here have me feeling like I’m at the Olympics!

🤸🏅

Bravo, apologists -Gold for all of you! Lol! 👏🤣

I don't think you know how referencing and benchmarks work for marketing.

Blown way out of proportion. Vast majority of users won't notice any difference.
That's not the point though, your buying something newer than its predecessor that's slower and that's not acceptable. It should be on par or faster, not slower. Maybe they should put in a spinning rust drive because they may not notice the difference.

While Apple is at it maybe they should put the A10 chip in the iPhone 14 with a new name because unless benched most won't notice will they

Exactly right

The lengths people will go to in defense of Apple are just .... mesmerizing

They truly can do no wrong in some peoples eyes

Totally agree. This assumes that the base M2 MBA has a single NAND SSD. We'll find out very soon.

Exactly. I really don't understand why customers are acting like they are required to buy something here. Just don't buy the product if it doesn't meet your needs. You're not required to buy it.
“You don’t have to buy it” is not an argument and not the point being made here. Apple skimped on components and people noticed. And that’s an issue. Whether this affects people or not is irrelevant. That isn’t the issue at all. Apple is getting away with slipping cheaper components into their devices. It isn’t marginal. It is 50% slower. If it was 10% slower, maybe it could be written off as a variation in manufacturing. This was deliberate. And you shouldn’t be okay with it. Because this is Apple not putting their customers first. There was no reason for this.

A new device does not necessarily need to be better than its predecessor in every manner.
