Ok... it has been done... the Tigers are still number one at the all star break! Finally we are ligit! Anyone happy/excited/amazed?
They haven't even played a game yet! Give them a chance. :p

Anyways, Tuesday night will probably be the last time I root for Michael Young this season (he absolutely earned that award), unless the East is close at the end of the season and the Rangers are playing the Skanks. Otherwise, I'm rather indifferent now. :p

And here's hoping for a Clement/Kazmir trade. Yeah right. I doubt the GM of the Rays is that stupid.

Havent played a game yet? I am a little confused? I really hope they win the pennet.

Things are heating up after the All Star Break, The Yankees are half a game out, the Red Sox have slid a bit and the White Sox had a bit of a collapse. The Braves are having a winning streak and tied for 2nd so they are not out yet but the Mets still seem strong after destroying the Cubs Sunday night. The Tigers seem to be the real deal and they seem unstoppable at the moment. The Yankees pitching has gotten stronger as of late and the Red Sox are having some struggles with theirs. Oakland is looking good but the Angels are making a run so the AL west is still very much up for grabs.

Tigers winning the central division? Maybe, maybe not.

Ben

The Tigers are legit. Bonderman is good, I'm convinced Verlander is going to be great for a long time, and Rogers is a solid rotation anchor. Only Nate Robertson is pitching over his head (the 3.36 ERA doesn't match the 1.31 WHIP) and they score enough runs to get by.

I'm not sure I buy the general sentiment that the Wild Card will come out of the Central. The Tigers, White Sox and Twins are all very good and they're going to beat the heck out of each other over the next few months. The White Sox lead the Wild Card chase, the Yankees are 3 back, Toronto is 6 and Minnesota is 6.5 -- that puts as many East teams in contention as Central teams. And I'm not ready to write off the Angels (11 back) just yet -- with Lackey, Santana, Weaver, Colon and Escobar they could put together a long win streak and get within 4 or 5 going into September.

The Angels can easily make a run for the west as they are only 1.5 games out and the Yankees can easily grab the east as they are only half a game out. The way the White Sox played as of late they might knock themselves out of the wild card race if they don't get there acts together.

Ok, nothing to do with the 2006 season, but MLB.com is running this vote for "Hometown Heroes" (link at the top of the page and registration is required to vote) for the "most outsanding player in each club's history." I love this stuff so I thought I'd post it.

Here are my votes.

Arizona - Luis Gonzalez
Atlanta - Hank Aaron
Baltimore - Frank Robinson
Chicago Cubs - Ernie Banks
Chicago White Sox - Frank Thomas
Cincinnati - Johnny Bench
Cleveland - Bob Feller
Colorado - Todd Helton
Florida - Robb Nen (a sentimental favorite and none of the rest qualify for squat)
Houston - Jeff Bagwell
Kansas City - George Brett
Los Angeles Angels - Rod Carew
Los Angeles Dodgers - Jackie Robinson
Milwaukee - Robin Yount
Minnesota - Harmon Killebrew (Kent Hrbek is on the list but not Walter Johnson?)
New York Mets - Tom Seaver
New York Yankees - Babe Ruth
Oakland - Reggie Jackson
Phladelphia - Mike Schmidt
Pittsburgh - Roberto Clemente
St. Louis - Stan Musial
San Diego - Tony Gwynn
San Francisco - Willie Mays
Seattle - Ken Griffey, Jr.
Tampa Bay - Carl Crawford (this team shouldn't get a vote)
Texas - Ivan Rodriguez
Toronto - Joe Carter
Washington - Gary Carter

When you posted, it was the first day of games after the break, but only a few teams played, and the Tigers weren't one of them.

That said, I'm glad to see the Sox pulling out more 1 run victories (I'd prefer a margin of more than that, but it beats a 1 run loss.) Granted, two 1-0 games against the Royals isn't something to brag about, but a win's a win.

Arizona - Luis Gonzalez (Think I went for Gonzo there too)
Atlanta - Hank Aaron (DUHH!)
Baltimore - Frank Robinson (Gotta be Cal Ripken man!)
Chicago Cubs - Ernie Banks (Ryno!)
Chicago White Sox - Frank Thomas (I think I went with him)
Cincinnati - Johnny Bench (Rose!)
Cleveland - Bob Feller (don't remember, don't really care :p)
Colorado - Todd Helton (Yep, Todd here too)
Florida - Robb Nen (a sentimental favorite and none of the rest qualify for squat) (I went with D-Train)
Houston - Jeff Bagwell (Nolan Ryan)
Kansas City - George Brett (George)
Los Angeles Angels - Rod Carew (don't remember, but possibly Jim Abbot)
Los Angeles Dodgers - Jackie Robinson (Yep)
Milwaukee - Robin Yount (I went with Rollie, just because of his 'stache)
Minnesota - Harmon Killebrew (I went with Kirby on this one)
New York Mets - Tom Seaver (Same)
New York Yankees - Babe Ruth (This was the hardest for me, and I don't even remember who I went with. I think it was Mantle)
Oakland - Reggie Jackson (Eck)
Phladelphia - Mike Schmidt (Carlton perhaps?)
Pittsburgh - Roberto Clemente (Either Clemente or Wagner)
St. Louis - Stan Musial (The Wizard of Oz. And no disrespect to Pujols, but I don't think he should be on there. Yet.)
San Diego - Tony Gwynn (Either Gwynn or Winfield)
San Francisco - Willie Mays (Absolutely!)
Seattle - Ken Griffey, Jr. (yup)
Tampa Bay - Carl Crawford (Wade Boggs was here, but not Boston? I picked Crawford too though)
Texas - Ivan Rodriguez (Nolan Ryan, again)
Toronto - Joe Carter (I wrote in Dave Winfield. Nothing like a walk-off to win the WS)
Washington - Gary Carter (I just picked one, because the only name I recognized was Vidro)

And of course, I took Teddy for the Sox. Sorry Rocket, but it would have taken something Dan Duquette wasn't willing to give to pass the Splendid Splinter.

More stuff: Braves get Wickman. I don't think it'll help much. And A-Rod gets lessons in defense from a ball boy, and a lesson in clutch hitting from Vernon Wells.

And notice, the AVG leader in the MLB is on the Twins (AL), the HR/RBI leader is on the Red Sox (AL again), the Wins leaders are on the Red Sox and Blue Jays (AL East), the SO leader is on the Twins (AL), with 3 on the Red Sox (AL East), and one tied for 4th on the Devil Rays (AL East again), and the ERA leader is on the Twins (AL). Hmmm, I wonder how this post-season will go...

Haa, that was a good play by the ball boy, I think both teams would of signed him up last night. The Braves are just trying for a last stand but they should know that their season is over, just give it up.

As of today the Twins are only 4 games out of the wild card in the AL. Now is the real test though. The worst team in baseball on the road in their own division gets started in Cleveland tonight and then on to Chicago to go head to head with the White Sox. This week should tell the story for the Twins as to whether or not they will be in this at the end...

So the Twins have swept the White Sox and right now its a 3 say tie for the Wild Card, If the Yankees win tonight they will lead the WC and be 1.5 games behind the Red Sox.

What a ride this has been! Now we get to play Detroit at home. Liriano, Radke & Santana. Keep it going baby :D BTW - What's up with Harold Reynolds getting fired from ESPN? He was a star player for them, IMHO.

Early reports are Reynolds sexually harassed an employee, and that this wasn't his first offense.

What a moron -- he was good on ESPN.

Reynolds Reportedly Fired Over Harassment

'Baseball Tonight' Analyst Calls It a Misunderstanding
AP Sports
NEW YORK (July 26) - Harold Reynolds was fired by ESPN from his job as a baseball analyst after he was accused of sexual harassment, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

The former Gold Glove-winning second baseman, a member of the "Baseball Tonight" team for 11 years, said he didn't do anything to warrant his dismissal and wants his job back.

"It was a total misunderstanding," Reynolds told the Post. "My goal is to sit down and get back. To be honest with you, I gave a woman a hug and I felt like it was misinterpreted."

The newspaper, quoting sources, reported that the woman is an ESPN employee.

On Tuesday, ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said Reynolds, 45, made his last on-air appearance for the network Sunday night. ESPN refused to comment on previous reports that Reynolds was dismissed, or to provide any details regarding his departure.

"All I can say is he is no longer working here," Krulewitz said.

Reynolds, who played 12 major league seasons, joined ESPN in 1996. In addition to his work on "Baseball Tonight," he also covered the College World Series and the Little League World Series.

ESPN already was dealing with the loss of another baseball analyst, Peter Gammons, who has been off the air since he was stricken with a brain aneurysm on June 27.

Whether he did or not, in the past there have been allegations of sexual harassment at ESPN that didn't get the accused fired. So there must be something different going on here. Maybe there's total proof that he did it and they can't justify defending him. Maybe someone there never liked him and now has an excuse to fire him. Maybe he's no more guilty than previous ESPN employees, but they decided to err on the side of caution. Or maybe the accuser said she wouldn't sue if they fired him. At some companies, that would be an easy decision to make.

I've never thought he was much of an analyst, to be honest. He has a typical ex-ballplayer attitude that he has for more to teach us than he really does.

Im sure a lot has to do with the fact that ESPN is owned by Disney, they don't want to get involved in a sexual harassment case.

aloofman, what is the problem with your Dodgers? Just when I'm rooting for them to win (unbelievable I know) they get swept by the Pads! Up it SF we are ready to lose a certain closer (I think Benitez needs to be given different directions to the team bus - "Sorry, Armando, you're in South Carolina? How'd that happen? See you next year," ) but otherwise I'm encouraged by the team's play.

They forgot how to hit with runners on base.

I said it earlier, I really don't think the WC will be in the Central. Although, if Santana and Liriano keep it up, it might happen. I'm still calling the second place AL East team for WC, just like the last 3 years (Red Sox) and a crapload of the last 10 years.
