I said it earlier, I really don't think the WC will be in the Central. Although, if Santana and Liriano keep it up, it might happen. I'm still calling the second place AL East team for WC, just like the last 3 years (Red Sox) and a crapload of the last 10 years.
The more the Tigers gain a lead the more impressed I am with them and I think they might be a threat in the playoffs and might burst some teams bubble.

Just bought 30 days of MLB.TV for $14.95. I had to see the forthcoming series with the Twins and the Tigers. Don't know why I have such high hopes. In April the Tigers swept the Twins and outscored them 33-1 for the series  Anyways, Flip4Mac ROCKS. Instead of being stuck with a fixed sized window when watching the games, they fire up Quicktime so I can maximize the screen and kick back on the couch with a cold beer. Here's to good baseball :D

Ok, nothing to do with the 2006 season, but MLB.com is running this vote for "Hometown Heroes" (link at the top of the page and registration is required to vote) for the "most outsanding player in each club's history." I love this stuff so I thought I'd post it.

Here are my votes.

Arizona - Luis Gonzalez
Atlanta - Hank Aaron

....

Texas - Ivan Rodriguez
Toronto - Joe Carter
Washington - Gary Carter

You also left out Detroit. My vote is for Al Kaline, but Ty Cobb was the better player.

Sorry, I should have more closely checked my post. I voted for Cobb, even though he was arguably the worst human being to every play in the major leagues.

Yeah, Dodger fans are really scared of the big bad Padres! After all, you guys got ol' creaky knees. He couldn't throw anybody out when he was in his prime. Just what an NL team needs, a designated hitter!

nice how things turned out eh?

we swept the dodgers haha.. the pitcher even got a homerun

What brazen disregard for Chet Lemon!

I dunno, they're 1-2 against the Red Sox, and 1-3 against the Yankees. I don't thin they'll have the hitting to get past the BoSox's (hopefully, by postseason time) rotation (assuming a healthy and consistently good Wells. He looked good in his last start until he got nailed. We'll see what Monday brings), and bullpen (well, Papelbon and Timlin at least, and hopefully Foulke by then too).

It should be a rule that no team under .500 can make the playoffs, Let another good team that deserves a shot get in.

Abreu is a Yankee, along with Lidle, lets just hope the 4 minor leaguers they are trading are not top prospects.

One of them was a #1 pick (according to the Boston Globe/New York Times) in 2005. But honnestly, you just scored one of the best players on the market. Expect the price to be high.

The Yankees sent the Phillies 20-year-old minor-league shortstop C.J. Henry -- their No. 1 pick in 2005 -- and 27-year-old left-handed reliever Matt Smith. The Phillies also received minor league catcher Jesus Sanchez and right-hander Carlos Monasterios, while the Yankees took on responsibility for Abreu and Lidle's contracts.

I think thats just silly, any other good team has two chances to make the playoffs they can win their division or they can win the wildcard. If they aren't good enough to take either of those spots then they really aren't that good at all. The fact that one conference occasionally gets a team at or slightly below .500 isn't that big of a deal. People whine about it but they don't whine when the wildcard wins the world series over 6 division winners.

Is it me or ever since the all-star break the NL West has been reverting back to a repeat of awful 2005 season.

I don't think it was ever really that much better, I think it just played some bad teams ( like the Chicago Cubs) and got some easy wins early on, and some people started getting excited for no apparent reason.

It looks like the Cardinals ditched Pujol's best friend Luna, definitely an upgrade at 2b with belliard but ... I still laugh at them losing this week oh so shamefully!

From a distance it seems like a real steal for the Yankees. Guess we'll see in a couple of years.

They won't be re-signing Sheffield, at the very least ...

IIRC, Abbreu is supposed to make something like 40 mil over the next two years. There's only one team in the league that can randomly pick up guys like that.

No. The Red Sox usually don't pick up spending like that.

Ben

Speaking of the Red Sox, Schilling really took one in the gut last night, 3 Homeruns in the 3rd inning.:D

Sheffield will not be resigned next year, By grabbing Abreu leaves no open spot in the lineup.

Coming back down to Earth is more like it. :p

Take a look at the standings. Only one NL division has two teams above .500. I haven't sat down and run the numbers recently, but even without doing so, I'd be willing to bet that the combined records of the three NL divisions are within ±.005 of each other.

No it shouldn't; this is baseball, not basketball. Besides, when has it ever happened?

Now taking a look at the standings I think I'd rather be a fan of a team in the NL West (which I do) than be a fan of Pittsburgh or Washington and have to resign myself to April '07 already.

Devil's Advocate:
Technically the Padres finished lasted season 82-83 after being swept in the playoffs.

It's interesting to run the numbers on this.

The West still has the best overall record in the NL:

West: 259-264 .495
East: 254-268 .487
Central: 295-334 .469

But when you look at how the West has fared out of division, they seem more middling:

East v. West: East, 60-54.
Central V. West: West, 66-60.

But when you look at Interleague play, where the AL has dominated, the West has been the only NL division to hold its own:

In Interleauge play:

East: 32-52.
Central: 31-62.
West: 35-40.

I'm not sure how "strength of schedule" would play into that.

In other words -- the West has no dominant team, but decent teams up and down. While I think one would be hard put to argue that the NL West is a tougher division to win than the AL Central or East, it is probably the deepest division in MLB this year.

Assuming the Giants and Dodgers don't tank entirely.

Why has the NL west been so bad over the past few years, Its not like they have no named players. There should be at least one team that can run away with the division. Why are the Giants paying Bonds so much money if he hasn't been able to produce, The arguable greatest player and he can't even get his team the lead.
